Dear ECEDHA Members, Industry Partners, and Colleagues,

This issue has two highlights: Guest Editor Agnieszka Miguel (ECE Chair, Seattle University) has assembled an in-depth series of articles by ECE leaders on a topic of perennial interest to us - ABET. This is also a great time to book flights and hotel rooms for the upcoming 2017 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo in Miramar Beach, Florida on March 17-21, 2017.  We take this opportunity to spotlight our sunny host Prof. Simon Foo at FAMU-FSU.

A Message from the Guest Editor
Agnieszka Miguel,
Seattle University

Welcome to the December issue of the ECE Source.

This time of the year, many of us take advantage of the slower pace in our departments to catch up on issues that we have had no time to keep up with.  If ABET and the latest changes to the accreditation policies are on your list, you are in luck.  We have three articles that will bring you up to speed on what is going on with ABET and why.

Joseph Sussman,

Leading Through Change

As the global leader in accrediting technology programs, ABET is keenly aware of the constantly changing needs of the fields that we represent.  From emerging discipline like cyber security to increasingly diverse teams working on global issues and projects, the skills graduates need to be successful have evolved dramatically over the last two decades.

Update on Proposed Changes to ABET Engineering Criteria

It's great to have the opportunity to get in touch with ECEDHA again. During my 15 years as ECE department head, I greatly benefitted from my association with the wide range of colleagues who I met through ECEDHA. I also had the "pleasure" of preparing for three ABET visits. This year I am chairing the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, after many years as a program evaluator and team chair, and I believe that I have a good perspective on accreditation from both sides of the operation.

Getting Ready for ABET

All ECE department heads, past and present, invest a lot of energy getting ready for ABET. Fortunately, we don't have to figure out how to do this critical task on our own because our friends and colleagues who are or were active in ECEDHA are available to help. In the spirit of collaborative problem solving fostered by ECEDHA, I asked several people (see acknowledgment at the end) for their advice on how best to prepare for a visit. In particular, I asked for a paragraph or two on one or two key things they have found work well for them.  Being good engineers, they focused on long time constant processes, short time constant processes or sometimes both.
