The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association                                                                        December  2017
Letter from the Editor
Badri Roysam,
University of Houston
Dear ECEDHA Members, Industry Partners, and Colleagues,

We have all been glued to the news about the profound and sudden risks faced by our graduate students, and by implication, the future of American Research. As a department chair, an educator, an active researcher, and the father of a graduate student, I find it difficult to believe that this is actually happening.

As of this writing, we are witnessing a nerve-racking game of seesaw as the House and Senate versions of the 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R. 1) Legislation  are being reconciled. The House version of the Tax bill contains an ominous provision that would treat graduate tuition waivers as ordinary income, but the Senate version of the bill does not have this provision. Such a provision can cause immense harm to graduate students, our children, the economy, and our security.

Branding Initiative at ECEDHA 2018

Over the past year, ECEDHA has been working on an ambitious rebranding project with Tailfin Marketing to raise the visibility of the field of ECE to prospective students and the general public. We have made great strides and are excited to present research findings, creative concepts, and an implementation plan and marketing toolkit that can be used by all member schools at the 2018 ECEDHA Annual Conference & ECExpo in Monterey, California.

Last year, Catharine June from the University of Michigan and Ashlee Gardner from Georgia Tech formed an ECE Communicators Group and hosted special programming for communicators  at the Annual Conference . We were pleased to have quite a few communicators from all over the country attend. This year, we hope to host an even larger group as it is an important time to get your institution's communicator involved. In addition to all of the valuable programming on education, diversity, and research at the Annual Conference, Tailfin Marketing will be presenting the new branding strategy and concepts during a plenary panel session. There will also be a dedicated ECE Communicators Meeting, allowing your institution's communications and public relations professional to get an in-depth introduction to the branding toolkit and implementation strategies, as well as crucial networking time with peers.

Please have the person responsible for communications in your department mark their calendar for this amazing networking and learning opportunity!  We look forward to seeing you in Monterey this March.
