Dear ECEDHA family and friends,
Makerspaces have a way of transforming ECE undergraduate students into a thoughtful, collaborative, playful, engaged, organized, and creative community of happy future alumni. They are proud and happy to show the makerspace to future students in a welcoming peer-to-peer manner. They can also help advance cross-disciplinary undergraduate projects, provide a welcoming environment for female students, and help foster an entrepreneurial and/or service mindset. I know, because I have seen all of this firsthand.
At first blush, setting up a makerspace may seem like an expensive, and tricky endeavor, with an unclear payoff. It can even seem like a potential distraction to a busy Chair. Beyond the initiation, keeping a makerspace alive over time seems harder. However, with a little creativity and a little understanding of the student “makerspace culture”, these trepidations can be driven away. It is easier than it seems at first, especially in the ECE context.

Attend the Making and Makerspaces in Electrical and Computer Engineering Education Workshop at ECEDHA 2020
By: Shawn Jordan, Arizona State University
|
Makerspaces attract many with strong interest in electrical and computer engineering (ECE)-related topics, including embedded systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and electronics, and many makers self-identify as having interests related to ECE. However, many university and community college makerspace facilities focus primarily on mechanical fabrication tools such as 3-D printers and laser cutters. This highly interactive workshop will explore how making and makerspaces can be embedded in a broader ecosystem to attract and retain students in ECE, and the resultant changes in student learning that result from exposure to makerspaces. This workshop is designed for chairs, faculty, instructors, and lab staff from universities and community colleges along with industry, researchers, and others with an interest in making and makerspaces.
Workshop sessions will include a keynote from a thought leader in the maker movement, panel on the current state of making in ECE, an opportunity to do hands-on ECE-related making over lunch, designing, building, and sustaining inclusive ECE makerspaces, and making action plans to continue collaborating within a making in ECE community of practice. Speakers and workshop facilitators include thought leaders from the Nation of Makers, Cypress Semiconductor, Digi-Key, Arizona State, Bucknell, Georgia Tech, University of Illinois, and Virginia Tech.
A limited number of travel grants are available thanks to support from the National Science Foundation (EEC-1853158).
Apply for a travel grant here by
February 14th.

Participate in the iREDEFINE Workshop
By: Agnieszka Miguel
This year, we are again offering the
iREDEFINE workshop
at ECEDHA 2020. The goal of the workshop is to motivate and prepare women and minority PhD ECE students to pursue faculty positions. In its fourth year, the workshop offers sessions on negotiation strategies, different types of institutions, writing successful proposals, and mentoring graduate students.
One of the most popular iREDEFINE sessions needs your help. The CV Review and Mock Interview Session pairs students with department heads for a quick CV review and one academic interview question (list will be provided - all you need to do is give students feedback on how they answered the selected question). Students typically spend about 15 minutes with each department head before moving on to the next.
The session is Friday, March 20, 3:30 - 5:30pm.
