Dear ECEDHA family and friends,
Geopolitical controversies aside, deployment of the fifth-generation wireless communication technology (5G) on a global scale is underway as we enter the 2020’s. Utilizing additional spectral bands in the 24Ghz – 72GHz range, it promises a generational shift over its predecessor, 4G. Importantly, it is an impressive showcase of diverse ECE communication and RF power technologies, beamforming, The Internet of Things (IoT), digital/analog mixed-mode VLSI, and of course, numerous clever algorithms.

In this issue of the
ECE Source
, we are pleased to feature an ECE perspective from Michigan’s ECE Chair, Mingyan Liu, and ECE Communicator, Catharine June. Our discipline is clearly on track for unleashing yet another step change in human lives, on a scale comparabl
e to the printing press, electricity, the automobile, and the Internet, as described by Mingyan. As we go about transforming humanity, our discipline is set to reinvent itself yet again.
This is a good time to ponder how this revolution should impact the ECE curriculum
.
We look forward to seeing you at the annual meeting. The
2020 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo
will be held March 18 – 21, 2020 at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld. Make sure to invite your ECE/College Communicator to also attend the popular ECE Communicators session!

5G and ECE: Connecting the World
By: Mingyan Liu and Catharine June, Department of EECS, University of Michigan
5G, with its combination of ultra-low latency, high speed, high reliability, high capacity, and potential for ubiquitous use, will usher in a multitude of highly anticipated applications, while dramatically improving the functionality of existing wireless services. It is a technology built on the work of electrical and computer engineers, and reliant on ECE research to fulfill its promise.

The Arm University Program provides
FREE
to faculty Education Kits at universities worldwide to help them teach engineering concepts, using Arm and partner-based technologies as a vehicle. Typical kits include professional licenses of Arm software tools and teaching materials (lecture slides, labs and solutions) on relevant topics in Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering and related areas.
These modular kits can be customized by faculty or used ‘as is’ and cover key curricula subject areas:
- Embedded Systems Design and Programming
- System on Chip Design
- Internet of Things
- Digital Signal Processing
- Embedded Linux
- Real-Time Operating Systems Design and Programming

Attend the Making and Makerspaces in Electrical and Computer Engineering Education Workshop
Date: Sunday, March 22, 2020
Location: Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld - Orlando, FL
Makerspaces attract many with strong interest in electrical and computer engineering (ECE)-related topics, including embedded systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and electronics, and many makers self-identify as having interests related to ECE. However, many university and community college makerspace facilities focus primarily on mechanical fabrication tools such as 3-D printers and laser cutters. This highly interactive workshop will explore how making and makerspaces can be embedded in a broader ecosystem to attract and retain students in ECE, and the resultant changes in student learning that result from exposure to makerspaces. This workshop is designed for chairs, faculty, instructors, and lab staff from universities and community colleges along with industry, researchers, and others with an interest in making and makerspaces.
Workshop sessions will include a keynote from a thought leader in the maker movement, panel on the current state of making in ECE, an opportunity to do hands-on ECE-related making over lunch, designing, building, and sustaining inclusive ECE makerspaces, and making action plans to continue collaborating within a making in ECE community of practice. Speakers and workshop facilitators include thought leaders from the Nation of Makers, Cypress Semiconductor, Digi-Key, Arizona State, Bucknell, Georgia Tech, University of Illinois, and Virginia Tech.
A limited number of travel grants are available thanks to support from the National Science Foundation (EEC-1853158).
