Greetings! It is hard to believe that it has already been over a month since the ECEDHA meeting in San Diego. Matt Ohland and I are grateful for the enthusiastic participation from the participants in our sessions on diversity within ECE education. There are several purposes of this issue of the ECE Source.
1. Summarizing the sessions on diversity in ECE including links to relevant papers and projects.
2. Providing more information on the MIDFIELD database and how to join the partnership.
3. Catalyzing action on Diversity within ECEDHA. Several of us indicated interest in pursuing this topic and seeking funding. We welcome more participants. Please let Megan Bekolay (mbekolay@ecedha.org) know if you are interested.

Our discipline is faced with opportunities and challenges. The challenge of advancing diversity is important enough that the opening session of the
2016 ECEDHA Annual Conference
was devoted to this topic. Led by Susan Lord at the University of San Diego and Matt Ohland at Purdue University, this was an extremely successful and engaging session.
The conference organizers also introduced innovative technologies for gathering and displaying feedback from the attendees in real time by taking advantage of smartphones.

Evolution of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department from a Pure-Teaching to a Research-Teaching Orientation; the case of the Tecnológico de Monterrey

The "Instituto Tecnológico y De Estudios Superiores de Monterrey" or ITESM or "Tecnológico de Monterrey" was created back in 1943 by Eugenio Garza Sada, who was an extraordinary visionary engineer [1]. One of his primary objectives was to provide high level engineering education to professionals who could understand the engineering process of typical industrial processes such as steel making and food/drink processes. This brand new Institute of Technology was originally a teaching oriented institution with high standards and excellent quality in engineering education. This vision has continued through the more than seventy years of existence and still "Monterrey Tech" has been regarded as a top engineering education university, not just in Mexico, but also in Latin America.

Susan M. Lord Honored for Diversity Initiative at ECEDHA 2016
Susan M. Lord, Professor and Chair of Electrical Engineering at the University of San Diego, was honored with the Diversity Award at the 2016 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo in La Jolla, California this past March.
The award is given in recognition of proactive efforts to increase cultural, ethnic, and gender diversity within the ECE student body and among ECE faculty, that go well beyond and above the normal institutional recruiting practices.
Dr. Lord's dedication and extensive work on diversity embodies the "above and beyond". Her research has been supported by several National Science Foundation (NSF) grants from programs including CAREER, gender in science and engineering (GSE), and research in engineering education (REE). Her research focuses on the study and promotion of diversity in engineering including student pathways, diverse populations including Latinos and military veterans, and cross-cultural studies with non-U.S. students.
Dr. Lord's research has explored demographics and outcomes of students by race and gender in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Such data-driven studies of the current situation of undergraduate students in ECE are essential for enhancing diversity of the profession. Her impactful work on student demographics and outcomes has been extended to other engineering disciplines including, Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, and Aerospace.

C.L. Max Nikias Honored for University's Diversity Efforts at ECEDHA 2016
USC President C. L. Max Nikias was honored at the
2016 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECE
xpo
in La Jolla, California this past March, receiving the organization's 2016 Diversity Award at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines.
The award is given to an organization or individual whose proactive efforts increase cultural, ethnic and gender diversity within the Electrical and Computer Engineering student body and among ECE faculty. Nikias' recognition was based on his efforts to boost diversity across USC's student population.
"We are pleased to recognize President Nikias' leadership in recruiting a talented and diverse student and faculty body," said Zhihua Qu, ECEDHA's Awards Committee chair and Chair of the ECE Department at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. "USC's accomplishments establish a blueprint for creating greater diversity within electrical and computer engineering - and well beyond."

New! AIST Foundation Electrical Engineering Grant
T
o address the increased industry need for electrical engineers, the AIST Foundation has established a new grant to challenge North American university teams (students and professors) to submit proposals for a one-year US$10,000 grant in the theme area of an electrical challenge within the steel manufacturing industry.
Professors of industrial control systems, power and energy systems, and electrical machines and motor drives are encouraged to apply. Proposals will be accepted through 30 June 2016 for the inaugural grant.
