Dear ECEDHA Members, Industry Partners, and Colleagues,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 academic year. Now that the first few weeks of the semeter are behind us, and things (hopefully) seem a bit more settled around our offices, it is a great time to focus on our core mission- creating effective learning environments for our students. This is also the perfect time to seek fresh inspiration to power us through the upcoming year, and into the future. This issue of the Source covers both these topics.

ECEDHA 2016 Blended Learning Workshop: Overview and Motivations
By John Booske and Erica J. Hagen, University of Wisconsin-Madison
The workshop on blended learning at the 2016 ECEDHA Annual Conference was inspired by enthusiasm from the 2015 ECEDHA Conference's break-out session in which presenters described illustrations of blended learning instruction in their institutions. A common feedback comment for that 2015 session was, "How do I get started?" Although many successful blended learning courses are the products of huge amounts of labor and resources, the road to successful blended instruction begins with several small steps.

Learning Analytics: Power Tools for Education
By Richard Baraniuk, Rice University
It is not the information students are given that determines learning, but what they do with it, how they process it, how they construct knowledge, and how they use knowledge in collaboration with others. Nevertheless, the primary modes of instruction today, including lecture and text and even most e-learning, remain passive, receptive experiences for students. In the language of control theory, much of our current education system runs in a substantially "open loop" mode.

An Industry Perspective on Education Needed for the Next Century Power Grid
By Wanda Reder, S&C Electric Company
Throughout my 30-year career, it has been fascinating to watch how the power industry has transformed. The relatively stable electric system that has evolved over the past 100+ years is now experiencing an unprecedented rate of change due to emerging technologies, customer preferences and behaviors, the regulatory climate, aging infrastructure, and increasing security concerns to name a few. For the foreseeable future, decarbonizing and modernizing the grid to serve the economic needs of the 21st century will be a priority.
