It’s 2022! There are several of us in ECE who have children graduating from High School this spring. As I reflect on when my child started in ECE in the toddler class, I remember thinking how far off that seemed. It reminds me of what someone once told me when I was feeling exhausted with a newborn: “The days seem long but the years are short.” This has been my experience as a parent and possibly many of you can relate to that as well.
While some things seem to speed by, I can say that some things seem to move a bit slower. For example, the shade structure that will cover the play structure has been in the works for quite some time! We are grateful that we are now in the implementation phase. In addition to the shade, some of the concrete will be replaced.
At all times, and especially during the construction, we want to maintain a safe drop-off and pick-up for our students. Please stay in your car and use the designated drive-through area. ECE staff will come to the car and escort your child to/from your vehicle. Traffic to and from CSD can be a challenge but we ask that you try to arrive by 8:30 to help with a smooth transition to the classroom. This will also help students who may need some extra support coming to school.

Hay varios de nosotros en ECE que tienen niños que se gradúan de High School esta primavera. Al reflexionar sobre cuando mi hijo comenzó en ECE en la clase de niño, recuerdo pensar lo lejos que parecía. Me recuerda lo que alguien me dijo una vez cuando me sentía agotado con un recién nacido: “Los días parecen largos pero los años son cortos”. Esta ha sido mi experiencia como padre y posiblemente muchos de ustedes pueden relacionarse con eso también.
Aunque algunas cosas parecen acelerar, puedo decir que algunas cosas parecen moverse un poco más despacio. Por ejemplo, la estructura de sombra que cubrirá la estructura de juego ha estado en las obras durante bastante tiempo! Agradecemos que estemos ahora en la fase de aplicación. Además de la sombra, parte del hormigón será reemplazado.
En todo momento, y especialmente durante la construcción, queremos mantener un servicio seguro de traslado y recogida para nuestros estudiantes. Por favor, quédese en su coche y utilice la zona de conducción designada. El personal de ECE vendrá al auto y acompañará a su niño hacia/desde su vehículo. El tráfico hacia y desde CSD puede ser un desafío, pero le pedimos que trate de llegar a 8:30 para ayudar con una transición sin problemas al salón de clases. Esto también ayudará a los estudiantes que puedan necesitar algún apoyo adicional que vengan a la escuela.

As part of our commitment to our students and families, we are engaging in different professional development opportunities. In addition to the CSD calendar, ECE will be closed (or closing early) on the following days/times:

For Social Emotional Learning, we implemented Check in using ZONES of Regulations on the doors before entering the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes.

"I am feeling relaxed because I had a good sleep and ate well."

These examples show the students’ ability to identify their feelings and explain why they are feeling that way. We also discussed how we can cope with our feelings and how our feelings can change during the day. During SEL class, we talk about the importance of emotions and that it is OK to feel the way we do and how we can support ourselves and where to ask for help. We tested out some coping skills such as yoga, drawing, squeezing balls and more. We had some story signing of books too. As for Preschool, we are still working on identification of feelings, labeling, and applying those in various settings.
I also had the opportunity to pull out students individually for some 1:1 sessions with me in my SEL classroom. This is intended to give students the options to see they can also ask for specific attention and support when needed. This also helps me build relationships with students other than in groups. We do play games, make arts & crafts, or just chat together for a little bit. It is important to us to have our students feel safe with their emotions here in ECE.
You might remember from last fall, that if your child needs extra care at any specific time or if there has been anything going on – just drop us (your child’s teacher, myself, or Michele) a “handle with care” email. This will help your child to feel supported here at ECE.
This semester, we will start with a focus on friendship with topics such as how to be a great friend, how we can help each other in different ways and how we can create a caring community. We have seen some situations where preferences/selections were made and that hurts to see some students feeling hurt being rejected. We do not want to see this in our ECE community. We would love to have your support in having conversations with your child about how they can be a caring friend, and what it means to feel while being a good friend.

Estos ejemplos muestran la capacidad de los estudiantes para identificar sus sentimientos y explicar por qué se sienten de esa manera. También discutimos cómo podemos hacer frente a nuestros sentimientos y cómo pueden cambiar nuestros sentimientos durante el día.Durante la clase SEL, hablamos sobre la importancia de las emociones y que está bien sentir la forma en que lo hacemos y cómo podemos apoyarnos y dónde pedir ayuda. Hemos probado algunas habilidades para hacer frente, como yoga, dibujo, pelotas de compresión y más.También tuvimos algunas firmas de libros. En cuanto al preescolar, todavía estamos trabajando en la identificación de sentimientos, el etiquetado y la aplicación de los mismos en diversos entornos.
También tuve la oportunidad de sacar a los estudiantes individualmente para unas 1:1 sesiones conmigo en mi salón de clases de SEL. Esta intención es dar a los estudiantes las opciones para ver que también pueden pedir atención y apoyo específicos cuando sea necesario. Esto también me ayuda a construir relaciones con estudiantes que no sean en grupos. Hacemos juegos, hacemos artes y artesanías, o simplemente chatea juntos por un poco. Es importante para nosotros que nuestros estudiantes se sientan seguros con sus emociones aquí en ECE.
Usted puede recordar desde el otoño pasado, que si su hijo necesita cuidado adicional en cualquier momento específico o si ha habido algo que está pasando – simplemente dejarnos (el maestro de su hijo, yo o Michele) un correo electrónico “manejar con cuidado”. Esto ayudará a su hijo a sentirse apoyado aquí en ECE.
Este semestre, comenzaremos con un enfoque en la amistad con temas como cómo ser un gran amigo, cómo podemos ayudarnos unos a otros de diferentes maneras y cómo podemos crear una comunidad solidaria.
