Dear ECEDHA friends and family,
Happy April! We have almost made it to the end of the semester and summer is approaching.
With vaccinations increasing and the pandemic outlook improving, re-opening plans are coming back to the center of attention for the Fall semester. Our ECE departments, like our home institutions, are right in the middle of the plan to bring back students, faculty and staff, to open common areas, remove restrictions from sports events and to allow gatherings for arts and entertainment.
As some of the largest and most extroverted departments at our universities, these matters concern us a lot. Also, because of our emphasis on technology, we find ourselves on both sides, as recipients but also as innovators. Not only in the short and mid-term big return, but in the longer-term post-covid brave new world, where technology and remote instruction will play a crucial and strategic role.

The Impact of Diversity and Inclusion

I have had the honor and privilege to lead a group of amazing, diverse, and underrepresented engineers in STEM over the last year as the chapter president of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). At the University of New Mexico (UNM) within the School of Engineering (SOE), SWE is one of the largest, active student organizations supported by the Engineering Student Success (ESS) Center. SWE was created to represent women in engineering but our members are not only women and we represent more than just engineers.

SWE encourages our members to volunteer in the community to motivate and excite passion for STEM in New Mexico students. Through workshops and conferences, we help our members expand their professional network and technical skills. Above all, however, SWE is a resource and platform for students to develop as engineers and succeed in their academic and personal lives through connection and engagement with others in the UNM SOE community.

Visiting Mars with a Virtual CyBot: Innovation in Hands-on Learning During COVID-19

In a normal semester, Iowa State University’s Introduction to Embedded Systems course in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECpE) features a popular project simulating exploration of the surface of the planet Mars, using iRobot Roomba-based mobile robots fitted with microcontrollers, nicknamed CyBots, after Iowa State’s mascot Cy.
The CyBot platform is an embedded systems platform – a programmable mobile system composed of various sensors for solving embedded systems problems. In this course, the platform is used to develop a prototype of a Mars Rover that can avoid obstacles, collect data about the Martian terrain, stay within a radiation safe zone and navigate to a communication relay station to send findings back to Earth.

Q. Why is ECEDHA important to you?
A. Being a department Chair is challenging with many responsibilities: faculty (evaluation/advancement, hiring, research), undergraduate and graduate (curriculum, teaching schedule, recruitment, ABET), alumni/industry relations (Industry advisory board, recruitment). This is especially true for large department. I have learned a lot from my colleagues at ECEDHA, which helps me to improve our department. I also like the interaction with industry partners, learning about (and give feedback on) their latest equipment/devices that enhance our education mission.
Q. If you had to choose another profession, what would you choose?
A. Several thoughts... K-12 teacher. I enjoyed the interaction with students. Tennis coach. I love tennis.

Q. What do you want the academic community to know or understand about your company?
A. Our University Program is built to make educators’ lives easier thanks to ready-to-use lecture and lab materials and free kits to provide students with very useful hands-on skills. It is also backed by a strong technical support system and we are always here for any questions and open to support new project ideas.
Q. Was there a defining moment in your life that made you choose ECE as a profession?
A. As a student of Business Administration with a focus on international management and marketing, I was open to lots of very different industries at first. I discovered the technical world by luck when I took on a student job at Osram and quickly got excited about this kind of industry and work environment.

2021 IEEE-HKN Awards: Call for Nominations
IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu encourages Chapters and individuals to nominate all eligible candidates for the 2021 IEEE-HKN Awards. The awards promote and encourage excellence in electrical and computer engineering and allied fields. These awards recognize outstanding accomplishments by students, professors and industry professionals who make significant contributions to society, and who exemplify a balance of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

CRA/CCC Announces CIFellows 2021 Program
The Computing Research Association (CRA) and Computing Community Consortium (CCC) are pleased to announce a new Computing Innovation Fellows (CIFellows) cohort for 2021. This program recognizes the continued disruption to hiring in academic institutions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As before, this program aims to provide a career-enhancing bridge experience for recent and soon-to-be PhD graduates in computing to support maintaining the computing research pipeline.
CRA will be holding an information webinar on Thursday, April 15th at 2:30 PM EDT for interested community members. Please register here. While details are still being finalized, applications will likely be due around early May 2021, with decisions being made by July 1, 2021 for positions beginning this fall or next winter.
