Dear ECEDHA friends and family,
Happy February! With some luck this is frequently a month for starting the transition from Winter to Spring. And emblematically, this year, we may be starting to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel.
To stay on the analogy, this may still go either way, Winter making a frosty comeback and the pandemic relancing with COVID variants and other setbacks. Besides luck, preparation is crucial. Science is fighting back the virus and, in the meanwhile, us at ECEDHA and the ECE folks on the ground, we keep doing our best to serve our communities.
So, as we get on with 2021, in the Source as in ECEDHA, our focus remains on our constituents. On the ECEDHA category calls, the upcoming Summit, the workshops, and all the other activities, we are putting our emphasis on our students, our staff, our faculty, and our “customers,” i.e., the industry that employs our graduates.

When Prof. Stefanie Mueller (MIT) faced the necessity of adapting her laboratory class to the COVID pandemic, she was initially overwhelmed by the amount of work that would need to be done. That’s because Mueller’s hands-on building and fabrication class, 6.810 “ Engineering Interactive Technologies”, is entirely about the ways that humans interact with technology in the physical world. As it turns out, however, technology held some surprises—even for Mueller.

Q. What have you found to have been most rewarding in your experience as a Board Member with ECEDHA?
A. Every ECEDHA activity has been rewarding for me. The conferences have been fantastic, the fellowship of my counterparts in universities throughout the world, our Latin American outreach activities, my interactions with the ECEDHA staff, and of course, and the editorial work that we did together on the ECE Source. I am still amazed at the prescient accuracy of our editorials in February and March of 2020. We communicated the pandemic’s expected impacts and timing, and importantly, the steps that ECE Departments must take in a manner that is still accurate today, nearly a year later!
Q. If you had to choose another profession, what would you choose?
A. A neuroscientist. The human brain is a source of endless wonder to me. I am so fortunate to be working on the brain even as an ECE professor. In my lab, we analyze images of brain tissues afflicted by concussion, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias.

Q. What do you want the academic community to know or understand about your company?
A. Infineon is the world’s eighth largest semiconductor company with over 45,000 employees. One of Infineon’s core values is to “foster cultural inclusiveness where individuals are respected and diversity is cherished.” Cypress officially became a part of Infineon on April 16, 2020. As the Cypress University Alliance has stood with academia since 2006, the Infineon University Alliance will continue that legacy.
Q. Was there a defining moment in your life that made you choose ECE as a profession?
A. Perhaps when I built my first Heath Kit radio in eighth-grade. I have always been a tinkerer.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site on Deep Learning Driven Cybersecurity Research in a Multidisciplinary Environment
Presented by the Center for Cybersecurity Education and Research (CCSER) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Old Dominion University
Students from all relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply and work on a cybersecurity project, including computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, criminal justice, system engineering, psychology and more. The 10-week summer program includes various evens, such as seminars, career/graduate study panels, and field trips to Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command.
