Dear Sara,
The new year has begun, and we look forward to working with you to strengthen our early care and education community! We hope this message finds you refreshed and ready to tackle new opportunities.
Our work ahead includes the upcoming San Francisco budget season—an opportunity to let San Francisco departments, including the new Department of Early Childhood (DEC), know what's working and what's needed so they can adjust policies and allocate funds to best serve 0-5 year old children, their families, and the educators that provide their care and education. Last year DEC released over $252M in Baby C dollars, with over $70M of this to teacher wages and workforce supports. How did this impact you and your program?
ECESF holds community convenings to share the experiences of educators at ECE sites and identify priority needs, working alongside city partners and allies to develop solution-based strategies. See our interest form below—and come join us!
In this newsletter, you will find lots of useful information and resources for early care educators, program administrators, and the families you serve:

Monday, January 16th
In the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed annually on the third Monday in January. The day commemorates the life and work of the influential civil rights leader, Dr. King.
Are you wondering how to honor and share his legacy with young children?
Here are some Do's and Don'ts to prepare, implement, and continue understanding bias, the history of race, and civil rights in your classrooms throughout the year. List created & published by early educator, Ijumaa Jordan.
Learn more about "Defending and Celebrating Racial Learning in Early Childhood"!
Watch the EmbraceRace Early Childhood Summit, featuring four "tiny talks," a panel, and breakout sessions. To extend the conversation from the summit further, they are offering an interactive, 2-hour workshop, "Extending Your Practice" with time to reflect on the summit themes with the community and to set concrete next steps for translating learning into practice. The workshop happens on Saturday, January 21st from 9am to 11 am PST. Read more and register on the event page!

Exchange Leadership Initiative: Call for Applications
Do you know someone who has impacted the world of early care and education? Maybe that someone is you! Exchange Press identifies and supports leaders in all facets of our field through the Exchange Leadership Initiative (ELI) and they are looking for applicants for the 2023 cohort of Exchange Leaders:
Let’s empower those we see lead, encouraging them to acknowledge their impact as changemakers, mentors, and role models.
Let’s intentionally consider diversity and equity, inviting our colleagues who may have been marginalized due to systemic inequities.
Let’s reach out to leaders who may not yet recognize this call to action is for them.
“As I go through doors of opportunity, I want to ensure that I leave the door open behind me with a welcome mat for other leaders to join me... If we all work together to support each other, we can have a positive impact and ensure that the early childhood education profession is seen as a profession of excellence.” —Lauren Bond, Exchange Leader 2022
Apply for yourself, or to send an invitation to apply to someone you recommend. The deadline for applications is March 27, 2023. Don't delay: part of the application includes letters of recommendation specifically for ELI.
