Presented by: AAPD
When: June 22-23 12-3:45 PM EST
Where: Online
Description:
The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is proud to announce POWER: the Disability Vote, a national, non-partisan Disability & Election Virtual Summit on Monday & Tuesday, June 22 and 23 from noon to 3:45 pm ET. Both days and will include panels, presentations, and a national call-to-action to mobilize disability voters and allies.
AAPD is hosting POWER: The Disability Vote as a means of highlighting the power of the disability vote. Disability groups across America are staring down the pandemic with a big question: given COVID-19’s impact on Americans with disabilities and growing numbers of voters who will acquire disabilities, will the Disability Vote be among the deciding factors in the 2020 Election?
YES! In 2020, over 35 million eligible voters will be people with disabilities. The number of “disability voters” increases to over 62 million when we consider the ripple effect of the disability vote that connects families, friends, advocates, educators, providers, and other individuals that interact with people with disabilities.

Loudoun ENDependence (LEND)
There is a lot going on right now and around the country but one of the fundamental principles our country was founded on, is our right to exercise our voice through voting. Did you know that our state primary is next Tuesday, June 23. While this is a very pivotal election, if you cannot go to the polls for a number of reasons, you can do several things in order to prepare for November 3rd election, and still make your voice heard.
• Start thinking about a back up plan. Should we still be under restrictions due to COVID-19, and if you are a MetroAccess, how far in advance can you schedule your ride? What is the backup plan if they do not assist you in a timely manner? Do you know where to get your absentee ballot to omit your need to leave your home and still be able to perform your civic duty?
• If you know you will not be going out for the foreseeable future, under any circumstances; as a person with a disability OR as the caretaker of someone with a disability, request your
Absentee Ballot, here. Note, under new and relaxed guidelines, anyone that is not disabled, nor a caretaker of a person with a disability, may also apply for an
absentee ballot if you are concerned about possible COVID-19 exposure. Below, see the following deadlines for the November 3, 2020 voting.
• In Person: 3 days before Election Day (from your local registrar's office October 30th).
• By Mail: 7 days before Election Day. (October 23, 2020)
• Online: 7 days before Election Day (by October 23, 2020).
• Familiarize yourself on WHO is running Get a
sample ballot . Remember that local and state government officials are also important for change as it is at the presidential level.
• Never forget you have a voice, and a right. We are not here to sway you one way or the other. We ONLY want to inform you and to remind you that so many people, women suffragist, people of color and LGBT-Q activists all over the nation have fought hard for their rights, and they did not take it lightly. You shouldn't either.
Get out there and VOTE!!
If you need help, we will again partner with the National REV UP campaign coordinating the National Disability Voter Registration Week (NDVRW), an annual initiative that is hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). The 2020 campaign runs during the week of July 13-17, 2020 and helps make a concerted effort to get people with disabilities registered to vote, educated about this year's election and prepared to cast your ballot. If you need assistance with preparing to vote or applications, please reach out to ECNV, your peer counselor AND if you would like to help host an event, partnering with ECNV / LEND, please let us know.

We are all in this together. Our team at ECNV is continuing to stay connected with each other, our consumers and partners. We have a working document to bring you up to date resources during this pandemic. Please email [email protected] if you have resources you would like to add to this list.

Traveling to the DC Metro Area and need a personal assistant? ECNV maintains a PAS registry which is a list of individuals who are available to provide personal assistance. The registry offers consumers and social workers in different counties a resource for finding providers. Many of them have home health care training and are willing to work at a mutually agreeable rate that can be lower than prevailing rates charged by home care agencies. The registry, which is updated on a regular basis, may be obtained by request from the PAS Coordinator. Assistants listed in the registry have completed an application that provides information about their experience and qualifications including personal references. The applicants are then required to attend a training workshop, orienting them to the philosophy of consumer-directed services before being added to the registry.
If you wish to apply to be a personal assistant please fill out the
application and submit to Ruchika Lalwani. Her information is below.
Please contact Ruchika Lalwani at [email protected] or (703) 525-3268 for further information about the PAS registry.
ECNV does not conduct background or reference checks but encourages consumers to do so before hiring a provider. ECNV does not offer personal assistant management training to consumers.
