Biden Announces Test To Treat Initiative and Where To Access COVID Anti-Viral Pills
Earlier this month, President Biden announced during the state of the Union address that the White House is launching a new Test to Treat initiative. Starting March 7th hundreds of federally-qualified health centers, pharmacy-based clinics, and long-term care facilities across the country started participating in the initiative and are eligible to receive the oral antiviral pills from Merck (molnupiravir) and Pfizer (Paxlovid) through direct allocations from HHS/ASPR. HHS will enroll additional sites in the coming weeks as the program launches and expands. There will also be a website launched to find the nearest location to you expected in mid-March.

At these participating locations a person can either bring their positive at-home covid rapid test or take a rapid test at the participating location and then receive free oral antiviral pills. In addition to the Test to Treat sites, states and territories will also continue to receive oral antiviral pills available for distribution throughout their jurisdictions and people can also get the anti-viral pills prescribed by their regular physician.

HHS also released a Fact Sheet you can find Here.

ECNV Partners with Sunrise Community and City of Alexandria to Get Community Vaccinated
On Tuesday, March 15, ECNV in partnership with Sunrise Community and the Alexandria Health Department had a vaccination event where 33 people received vaccinations. ECNV had 2 Trusted Disability Champions present at this event. The Trusted Disability Network is made up of people with disabilities who want to play a vital role in helping other people with disabilities by promoting immunizations and spreading other disability information and rights in their communities that have not traditionally received disability-related information.

We are also looking for people who want to co-host our vaccination clinics throughout the region. Contact Rosalía Fajardo at RFajardo@ecnv.org if you have any questions. To apply to be part of our Trusted Disability Network, please use the link below.

Young Adult Knight’s Social Group: A Two-Year Glance

It’s been two years since the Young Adult Knights went virtual. Though it was strange in the beginning, the Knights came through and we have had some great times. The first year we had two social groups a month, most Knights felt as though they needed that extra contact with their peers. We have had two graduations parties, Valentine’s Day Zoom Dinner, St. Patrick’s Day’s celebrations and games, Christmas Ugly Sweater contests, Thanksgiving Trivia, Marvel Movies Night with Captain America, Movie Festival and Critique, Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Contests, and Lip Sync/Dance Parties along with game nights galore. We even had a special guest who talked to the Knights about Cybersecurity and how to keep your passwords safe and what to know about cyber scamming. Through it all, the most important aspect was the camaraderie, and support for each other. It was not all fun and games. Losing loved ones during the pandemic also had an impact on the group and extra support was needed.

It was a time of accomplishment and achievement; we designed and implemented a Peer Facilitator Training where interested members were trained to lead the social group, learned about group dynamics and running virtual platforms. Certificates were presented in acknowledgement of the training. Individuals included this training and new skills on their resume. ECNV facilitators were contacted by ENDependence Center Inc in Norfolk to speak with staff on how to start and facilitate a similar group in their catchment area b/c they heard of the success here in NoVa. We were acknowledged by FEMA for an outstanding positive story during the Pandemic.
Due to loosening of the COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions, the Knights have decreased social group meets back to once per month (due to other engagements by members) but continue to have lots of fun. We are hoping to start meeting in the community again very soon.

Please come and join the Knights every fourth Friday of each month at 6:00pm to 7:15pm.
The I Am Self-Advocacy Showcase!
On March 22nd, ECNV proudly hosted the I Am Self-Advocacy Program Showcase, a virtual event that allowed those in attendance to learn what the program is all about from the youth and young adults that participated in the pilot program.

The I Am Self-Advocacy Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) Program is for youth and young adults with disabilities, ages 16-22. The program allows participants to explore their abilities and discover their power to create change, speak up for themselves, and plan for future employment in a fun learning environment with their peers. During the span of 8 weeks, the participants discussed topics integral to self-advocacy such as self-awareness, disability awareness and self-determination, disability rights and responsibilities, how to be assertive, and how to engage allies and be an ally to others. Lea Kundratic and Tracee Gardner also discussed the future plans for the program, including the upcoming spring session beginning on April 4th.

During the showcase, program alumni discussed their advocacy journey, described what was learned from the program, what goals they currently have, and how they are using what they learned in their daily lives. Alumnus Veronica Boshkin from the Fall Session and Jack Erickson from the current, Winter Session, joined Lea Kundratic and Tracee Garner to answer questions on their experiences in the program sessions, as well as talked about how they are doing presently. Lead Co-facilitator for the program, Lea Kundratic said that "The I Am Self-Advocacy program is designed to help students learn advocacy so they can help themselves but also so that they can empower others."

The Spring Session will start April 4th. If you have a young adult/youth that is interested in taking part, please contact the Program Coordinator, Hannah Roberts at hannahr@ecnv.org or call ECNV's office number at 703-525-3268.

ECNV’s Rosalia Fajardo Speaks At El Poder de Ser Mujer Conference on Inclusion of Women with Disabilities
On March 6, on the occasion of the celebration of International Women's Month, El Poder de Ser Mujer organized its 6th annual conference in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
Multicultural Families’/ECNV’s Rosalia Fajardo was invited as a speaker to present at the conference on the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities. The audience of more than 200 Latina immigrant women heard for the first time on the subject of Inclusion for the rights of women and girls with disabilities and the double discrimination they often endure for being women and also having a disability. Rosalia was very proud to raise awareness in the multicultural community about the inclusion of women with disabilities for an audience that has rarely heard about this important topic.

ECNV and Advocates and Allies Across State Defeat Bill That Attacked Fair Housing Rights
During the 2022 Virginia General Assembly a bill, HB 586, that would harm the Fair Housing Rights of People with Disabilities that need an assistance animal passed in the House. House Bill 586 threatened the rights of Virginians with disabilities by making it harder to request reasonable accommodation from a landlord or from your condominium association to allow you to have an assistance animal in your apartment or other rental property. Disability Advocates and Allies from across the state came together to fight against HB 586. At the end of February ECNV sent out an action alert and many of you answered that call to action and YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE!

In early March ECNV’s Director of Advocacy Doris Ray got word that HB 586 ended up not being heard by the VA Senate Committee on General Laws & Technology as planned and that the bill died. A big thanks to the fair housing advocates and advocates who joined us, especially Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) in Richmond for supporting us to thwart what would have been a significant weakening of our rights under the Fair Housing Act!
We also want to recognize the leadership of Maureen Hollowell and the Virginia Association of Centers for Independent Living (VACIL) and Colleen Miller and the Disability Law Center of Virginia. Thank you all for your advocacy!

ECNV’s Agents of Change Choose Areas of Focus To Advance Disability Justice and Interdependence
Our Ford Foundation Fellows at ECNV, the Agents of Change (AoC) have hit the ground rolling this year. They have decided to focus on 3 key areas throughout most of this year, to help advance the rights, access, and opportunities for people with disabilities including: Housing, Employment, and Social Issues.

In the first part of the planning phase currently, they are focusing on the barriers and other issues around buying and renting housing as a disabled person; and interviewed a number of professionals in the real estate and housing markets on March 24th about ways that this can be improved. They interviewed the following professionals about these issues:

Tim Moyle, a blind real estate agent serving the Sonora, California area Susan Moyle, a universal design specialist Melisa Casacuberta, who has been a licensed residential real estate agent for 10 years and is also a Certified Aging-in-Place-Specialist. Roy May, is an Iraqi Army veteran turned real estate agent who works and lives in the Texas area.

Next the Agents of Change will begin to focus on Employment issues later in the Spring, and Social Issues in the Fall.
