ECOEA SUMMER LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS
ECOEA hosted our district Local President and Local Treasurer trainings at Stark State College on Thursday, July 14. We had a great turn-out with 42 presidents and treasurers spending their beautiful summer day preparing to do the work of your association. OEA President Scott DiMauro, VP Jeff Wensing, and Secretary-Treasurer Mark Hill were also on hand to participate, including a roundtable with local leaders. NEA Member Benefits rep Guy Kendall-Freas and Beth Nagy attended to connect locals with the services available to all members. Lisa Farmer, Beaver Local EA, was one of the lucky door prize winners! Good luck to all associations as they begin another year!
ECOEA also provided 86 hours of Professional Development to members from across ECOEA on a variety of topics in two days of Zoom sessions. Our PD is provided at no-charge and supports members with current topics and issues that affect all educators.

ECOEA AT THE NEA RA CHICAGO
All NEA delegates wore orange on the first day in memory of those lost to gun violence.
ECOEA Vice President Julie blogs for OEA at Voices of Change. Her latest blog A Teacher's Brain Following Yet Another School Shooting was bumped out to all delegates on the first day of the RA as everyone was dressed in orange.
Beautiful downtown Chicago at night. ECOEA delegates took a river cruise on July 4, but all Chicago fireworks had been cancelled because of the shooting at a parade in a suburb earlier in the day.
The Ohio delegation on the floor of the RA prior to the opening on the first day.
Ohio delegates in morning caucus at our host hotel, The Palmer House. The day begins with the Ohio caucus from 7 AM-9 AM then on to the Convention Center where the RA ran into the evening hours.
District Shirt Day sporting our green ECOEA shirts. A long-standing tradition, each of the ten OEA districts wear their colors.
Canton Professional EA members in person at the RA.

The NEA Representative Assembly was held July 3-6, 2022, in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first in-person RA in several years. Delegates had the option of participating in-person or virtually, with technology in place to allow all delegates the ability to debate and vote. ECOEA was well-represented with fifteen active and two retired members participating.
Delegates and their local associations were:
  • May Alayamini, Canton Professional EA
  • Diana Biddle, Canton Professional EA
  • Tina Bradley, Canton Professional EA

  • Julie Holderbaum, Minerva Local EA
  • Michelle Martin Jones, Canton Professional EA
  • Karen Linch, Wooster EA

Our delegates put in very long hours at meetings listening, debating, and voting on issues that affect educators and students across the country. In-person delegates had to follow strict NEA Covid protocols with testing, reporting, and masking. Special RA speaker was Vice President Kamala Harris. Ohio was very proud to have Kurt Russell, of Oberlin EA, recognized as the Teacher of the Year (pictured below with our delegates). Congratulations to Ohio Retired Delegate Kathleen Purdy who was elected to serve on the NEA-Retired Resolutions Committee. You can read more about the work accomplished at the RA at this link.

Our NEA-R Grant is focusing on increasing retiree participation and getting ECOEA and North Central OEA Retired Districts organized! A small group of 5 is working on a proposed Constitution and By-laws using a great and easy tool on how to complete this assignment. My goal is to have it ready to present to all of our retirees for approval before forwarding it to both the district and state.
