Silver Linings

When it is this hot outside, the blessing is it’s perfectly temperate in our sewing studios. So, enjoy time learning a new skill or perfecting an old technique, reorganizing your stash or digging through your UFOs.  Perhaps you are working on your Challenge quilt – or contemplating starting – now is the perfect time! If nothing else, bask in the glorious healing power of color therapy – maybe focus on the cool side of the color wheel this month!

Whatever you make time for, it will be worth it!

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for.” Georgia O’Keefe

Enjoy creating,

Guild Meeting Lectures:

All About Art Quilts / Exploring Art Quilt Collage

Deborah is an artist, author and teacher who creates art quilt collages with layers of fabric, paint and stitching. Her artwork makes a visual impact from across the room. Her art quilt collages often include personal symbols like ladders, chairs and bowls. She uses stitch as a design element. The shapes, compositions, lines and textures in her work serve as metaphors for ideas and themes including growth, transition, rest and curiosity.

Pam Cobb

Lecture: Stitch Scandals: The Surprisingly Saucy History of the Sewing Machine

Thursday, August 27, 2026

6:45 pm - 8:45 pm

Pam Cobb shares a presentation where you’ll meet the inventors, tinkerers, and troublemakers who transformed sewing. From prim petticoats to patent wars and philandering tycoons—it’s not all straight seams and straight-laced stories.

Think your sewing machine has a quiet, respectable past? Think again! Stitch Scandals dives into the unexpectedly dramatic history of the sewing machine—from fierce patent battles and courtroom showdowns to marketing breakthroughs and a scandal-prone sewing mogul with more than 20 children.

Library Highlight: It’s Not Just for Crazy Quilts Anymore

A recent trend seen in quilts is the addition of hand stitching. It can be as simple as a running stitch in Perle cotton. Other quilts are embellished with a multitude of different stitches in a variety of threads. If you would like to start experimenting with decorative hand stitching the library has many books from which to choose. Here are just a few:

"Joyful Stitching Book" by Laura Wasilowski

"Creative Stitching" by Sue Spargo

"1000 New Embroidery Designs" by Joan Waldman

"Embroidery Stitches Quilt Savvy" by Joan Sjuts Waldaman

"Embroidery & Patchwork Revisited" by Janice Vaine

"Embroidery and Crazy Quilt Stitch Tool" by Judith Baker Montano

To qualify for Golden Scissors, your quilt must be at least 280 inches around the perimeter, be made entirely by one person, and be submitted within one year of completion. A Golden Thimble will be awarded if that same quilt is hand-quilted.
