Denosumab in breast cancer.
By Cristiana Cipriani

The use of antiresorptive agents for treating bone loss associated with hormone deprivation therapy in patients with breast cancer is an established therapy, particularly in women on aromatase inhibitors. Bisphosphonates and denosumab are successfully adopted in these contexts.

An increasing attention has been paid in the last years on the cancer-specific effect of antiresorptive drugs, with positive evidence from studies on bisphosphonates on breast cancer recurrence, survival and cancer-related skeletal events. In this month newsletter we highlight new encouraging evidence in such field associated with the use of denosumab in postmenopausal women with non-metastatic breast adenocarcinoma and positive estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors or both treated with aromatase inhibitors. The disease-free survival was assessed as a secondary endpoint and resulted significantly higher in the denosumab group compared to placebo. In particular, distant metastases and occurrence of new primary cancer were significantly lower in women treated with denosumab.

Data from this study needs further validation on many aspects of such a relevant topic that will help to make important progresses and eventually influence clinical practice.
