ECTS 2020. Stay with us, we are moving the congress to 20-24 October 2020 -
By
Roberta Mugnai and Anna Teti
The ECTS cares about its members and delegates. Monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak it is clear that it will not be safe for anyone to attend the congress on 15-19 May 2020. Therefore, the ECTS Board has evaluated the situation and is now happy to announce that we have a new slot in the same venue in Marseille, France, on 21-24 October 2020, with the pre-congress day on 20 October.
The programme is expected to remain unchanged, although light adaptations may be necessary according to the speaker's availability. The ECTS 2020 SPC, co-chaired by Profs Christian Meier, Christa Maes, Martine Cohen-Solal and Bo Abrahamsen, is already working to ensure the congress remains rich and comprehensive. We have no doubts, it will be strongly appreciated by our delegates.

THANK YOU clinicians combatting COVID-19 -
by Gudrun Stenbeck and Nuria Guanyabenz
ECTS would like to send a heartfelt THANK YOU to all our clinical members that are working at the forefront of the COVID-19 outbreak. You are making a huge difference in these difficult times and our appreciation of your efforts is beyond words.
COVID-19 is changing our personal, professional and scientific lives. None of us has experienced a similar situation in which we moved so quickly from disbelief in the disaster to the understanding that this disaster had entered and permeated our lives. In almost every city in Europe, hospitals are overcrowded with patients, intensive care units are stretched to the limit, clinicians are on the front line with a high risk of infection, and basic scientists had to stop their research in haste. This is the scenario in Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, Paris, London... and, thus, health services in Europe have been overwhelmed, often with insufficient resources. Meanwhile, the population is reluctantly confined to their homes.

The EMerging EUlar NETwork (EMEUNET) - by by Felice Rivellese
Introduction by Petar Milovanovic
Similar to the ECTS that has established the ECTS Academy for young professionals in the bone field, the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) has established a network of young rheumatologists, called EMEUNET. Last year the cooperation between the leaders of ECTS Academy and EMEUNET was initiated and we already have several joint activities underway. For example, young specialists from both organizations are currently working on creation of short videos on practical clinical questions of mutual interest. There are also plans to interact at the conferences organized by parent societies as well as our yearly PhD training course.
For the current Newsletter edition, we invited Felice Rivellese, MD, PhD, EMEUNET's Chair Elect to introduce the EMEUNET to the ECTS members. Thanks, Felice!

Pregnancy-related bone mineral and microarchitecture changes in women aged 30-45 years -
by Cristiana Cipriani
Pregnancy is a physiological condition during which metabolic and structural changes occur in the skeleton aimed at supplying the fetus with the required calcium. As a consequence, several physiological mechanisms of adaptation usually develop in response to these changes for maintaining the mechanical properties of the skeleton.
However, studies on the assessment of changes in the bone structure during pregnancy have focused mostly on data before pregnancy and in the post-partum period.
Breasail et al. have recently reported data on the microstructural characteristics of bone assessed at the tibia and radius during pregnancy. The authors have employed the peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) and, for the first time, the high resolution pQCT (HR-pQCT) to the study of the trabecular and cortical microstructure in pregnant women aged 30-45. They found specific changes associated with pregnancy, according to the compartment and the site studied. In particular, they observed decreased cortical volumetric BMD and thickness, increased trabecular number and decreased trabecular separation at tibia, but not at radius. Authors suggest that bone is presumably mostly degraded at the trabecular level in response to fetus requirement of calcium during pregnancy, while structural adaptations occur at the cortical level. This would be evident exclusively at the load-bearing skeletal sites.
HR-pQCT is the gold standard in the non-invasive assessment of bone microstructure and the new data open interesting question on the physiological mechanisms involved in the metabolic bone changes during pregnancy. How these metabolic perturbations could impact the structural and mechanical properties of the skeleton in pregnant women and possible outcomes in the future life need further evaluation.
