A strong and open ECTS - statement from the incoming ECTS President -  By  Bo Abrahamsen

First of all, thank you for being a part of the ECTS family. This is hugely appreciated and a great way to help advance science in the bone and calcified tissue area and the Board of the ECTS would like to reciprocate by providing you with new opportunities to build your research network and career. One visible change to the organisation is that the Board will propose an update to the ECTS Statutes so that the President will be elected directly by the members in the future. We will work hard to keep the ECTS delivering all the things the ECTS always has done and we will do everything to remove barriers and keep the ECTS inclusive, diverse, welcoming and professional.

Information sharing is scientific-and-social caring in the ECTS: "We need you!" -  by Andre van Wijnen & Bram van der Eerden

Solutions to exciting scientific problems, as well as the development of new therapies and biomedical products requires good communication to share ideas, perspectives and experiences. Hence, one of the key priorities of the ECTS is to promote good communication between its members, the scientific enterprise and society at large. Within the social network we collectively embody, we wish to achieve this goal by maximizing opportunities for you to receive and disseminate information relevant to our society and profession.
The ECTS at its core is a highly inclusive volunteer organization and the ECTS would like to see you actively participate in our society, which is very transparent and democratic. The ECTS has set up a Communication Committee that creatively manages the principal electronic communication tools among our members, including the ECTS website and ECTS apps, the ECTS e-learning platform which contains webinars, the ECTS newsletter and ECTS social media. In the new normal of the COVID-19 era with social distancing, video group meetings and virtual scientific conferences, these tools have become even more relevant to all of us. Importantly, these tools are designed for you and by you. You are strongly encouraged to contribute and let your ideas be heard.

Osteoporosis and COVID-19- by Nicola Peel

Measures introduced back in March to create the emergency capacity needed to manage the COVID-19 pandemic have had a devastating impact on the delivery of routine healthcare including the management of those with osteoporosis. Widespread closure of elective services was implemented at short notice with little opportunity to put contingency plans in place and leaving patients unsupported and fearful. In the UK, the nurse-led helpline operated by the Royal Osteoporosis Society reflected this with its busiest period ever, receiving calls voicing concerns about susceptibility to COVID-19 infection, postponement of appointments and access to treatment. Most concerning were calls from patients with recent fragility fractures waiting for assessment or treatment and from others unable to access timely treatment with denosumab.

COVID-19 and Osteoporosis management  -  by Antonio Maurizi

In these last months "social distancing" has become the watchword. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic forced all of us to review our lifestyles and our social and working habits. While social distancing has become necessary to reduce the spread of the virus, it had a strong impact on the clinical routine care of patients suffering from chronic diseases requiring frequent medications.  Considering that osteoporosis is a chronic disease and patients need to be monitored and treated continuously, a question rises from experts in the field: How can we manage the osteoporosis patients during the COVID-19 pandemic?  To address this issue, the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) has established a special Steering Committee formed by specialists in the field of bone. Clinical guidelines and recommendations were provided in a recent article published by Yu et al., in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research . In this perspective article the authors provide evidence regarding the status of osteoporosis management in the COVID-19 Era. They addressed several essential aspects in the care of osteoporosis patients, ranging from the laboratory monitoring to the treatment. Particularly, they discussed alternative methods for delivering the osteoporosis treatments and the effect of the temporary disruption of osteoporosis care.  As always happens in human history we can learn from this unexpected health emergency. Indeed, some of the recommendations suggested to deal with this situation could prove to be so effective that they can be included in the clinical practice for the "regular" osteoporosis management, especially in those countries in which the access to the healthcare services is difficult.
