The Black Swan - The Coronavirus: It is still too early to panic, but not too soon to prepare. A black swan is an unpredictable event that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation and has potentially severe consequences. Recently, Robert Barone had a great piece in Forbes Media, LLC. that identified some of the potential economic impacts.  While the human impacts are real and alarming, the "avoidance behavior" that is increasing is likely to have significant economic impacts.  Here is his Article.

To many people, t he word blockchain, is a puzzling term that might have something to do with cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin. The technology, which is not only associated with cryptocurrencies, but actually powers how they work, has the potential for a wide range of applications, stirring a new wave of economic potential. Northern Nevada Economic Planning Indicators Committee ("EPIC") Report 2.0!   The forecast is green and the actual in red shows we are growing at a faster than projected rate.   Here is the latest report.


Housing remains a serious concern:  The chart below shows that we finished the year well off the goal for the number of permits for new housing units (including apartments and condos). As of December, we are more than 2,000 permits short of where we should be for the year and the lowest number in three years. Our housing is not keeping up with our growth. The shortage of new housing continues to drive our housing prices and rents up and is causing other challenges like an increase in homelessness. 
  

The "Lands Bill" Is Good for Our Community  -  Our local governments are working together on the Truckee Meadows Public Land Management Act (Lands Bill), an initiative to get local control of federal land to the east of Sparks and north of I-80. This initiative is modeled after a similar successful initiative called the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA). SNPLMA raised more than $3 Billion since enacted in 1998, with much of that revenue going to state, local, and regional government entities for conservation and recreation.  Here is the full article.

Business Development Updates

The Business Development team announced the relocation of four companies in February and 780 new jobs added to the region.
 
  • Makita, distribution, 85 jobs from GA to Reno
  • Simplex, manufacturing, 120 jobs from IL to Fernley
  • AeroSafe Global, manufacturing 75 jobs from NY to Spanish Springs WC
  • Undisclosed, call center, 500 jobs from CA to Reno
 
There were 13 new leads and projects (manufacturing and distribution) added to the activity pipeline and  7 site visits were hosted.
 
Chris Ault, Jr. is travelling to the Site Selectors Guild annual meeting to meet with some of  the world's  leading corporate location advisors across every industry,  sector, and function.
