EDCTP Update | December 2025 | | A message from Mr Abdoulie Barry, EDCTP Association’s Executive Director | | This has been a significant and productive year for the EDCTP Association. We have made substantial progress toward ensuring the successful conclusion of all EDCTP2-funded projects in the coming year, while also laying a solid foundation for the future activities of the EDCTP Association, utilising the extensive experience and skills of the staff, and continuing to support the Association’s constituencies. | Global Health EDCTP3 to fund up to €147 million in research and innovation projects in 2026 | |
Global Health EDCTP3 has launched its 2026 Work Programme, which includes six calls for proposals to support research and innovation projects addressing tuberculosis, lower respiratory tract infections, HIV, climate-change-driven infectious diseases and other pressing global health challenges. The calls for proposals will open for submission by mid-January 2026.
To support interested applicants, an online Info Day will be held on 5 February 2026. During the event, participants will receive detailed information on the call topics, application process and evaluation criteria.
| Strengthening the HIV response through African leadership and global collaboration | On World AIDS Day 2025, we reflected on the progress made and the ongoing challenges that remain in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The recent shifts in international research funding highlight a critical truth: overcoming HIV/AIDS requires both sustainable global commitment and locally driven solutions. By supporting collaborative research, strengthening the research ecosystem, and empowering African scientists and communities through EDCTP-funded research, we are helping to build a more sustainable, inclusive, and effective global HIV response. | Free access to SEPTRE platform | Researchers from low- and middle-income countries can still apply for one of the remaining free three-year licenses for the SPIRIT Electronic Protocol Tool and Resource (SEPTRE) platform. SEPTRE is an online resource that helps researchers create, manage, and register clinical trial protocols in accordance with SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) guidelines. | EDCTP: Two decades of Africa-Europe partnership delivering excellent science and life-saving innovations | For over 20 years, EDCTP has been at the heart of an ambitious Africa–Europe collaboration that is transforming global health. In an article in Science | Business, the CEOs of the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), and Mundo Sano discuss some of EDCTP’s success stories and how long‑term, equitable partnerships can turn scientific excellence into real‑world impact. | | Boosting global vaccinology capacity | | EVI and Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit The Gambia hosted a two-day translational vaccinology workshop from 5–6 November 2025, as part of the EDCTP2-funded MMVC project. The event brought together 20 participants from the MRC Unit The Gambia and 8 from the University of Sierra Leone (USL). The workshop aimed to strengthen capacity in vaccine clinical trials and to foster networking through South–South and North–South collaboration and exchange visits. | | Proving the value of malaria vaccines: how case-control studies can guide immunisation strategies | | Discover how case-control studies are helping to demonstrate the real-world value of malaria vaccines and inform national immunisation strategies in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. This short article and video highlight the MVPE-CC project’s collaborative approach, its role in evaluating the added benefit of a fourth RTS,S dose, and how its findings are guiding global decisions on malaria vaccine rollout. | | Spotlight on TB Innovation: bringing diagnosis closer to communities | | Zambart-led research has shown that portable GeneXpert machines, digital chest X-rays with computer-assisted detection (CAD), and community outreach can dramatically speed up the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in high-burden African settings. Drawing on data from over 6,500 community members across Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, the XACT-3 and XACT-19 studies, funded by EDCTP2, demonstrate how taking advanced diagnostics into communities can shorten the time to treatment and uncover cases that would otherwise be missed. | | | SINDOFO Consortium completes recruitment for the ZYFER-1 study: marking progress toward a new short-course malaria treatment | The SINDOFO consortium is advancing the development of a novel, non-artemisinin-based short-course treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria by combining zintrodiazine (also known as ZY19489) with ferroquine (FQ). This innovative regimen aims to tackle the growing challenge of antimalarial drug resistance while also strengthening sustainable research capacity across Africa. In November 2025, the Consortium reached a key milestone: successful completion of participant recruitment for the ZYFER-1 clinical study. | | SCEPRESSA project celebrates the graduation of fellows | | In 2025, the SCEPRESSA project marked a major milestone with the graduation of seven fellows from four sub-Saharan African countries: Anne Nduta Miatu (Kenya), Maryln Atieno Ochieng (Kenya), Onesmus Muti Mutie (Kenya), Levi Cheptoyek (Uganda), Simon Deng Nyawela (South Sudan), Jean Louis Kananura (Rwanda), and MarthaClaire Kerubo Zammit (Kenya) were all awarded the Master of Science degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). | | | From clinic to command: How the EDCTP IDEA Fellowship grant shaped a public health leader in Uganda | Dr William Okiror's journey takes him from the busy environment of a regional hospital ward to the frontline of national emergency coordination. His experience exemplifies how clinical skill combined with innovative public health leadership can make a difference. With support from the EDCTP IDEA Fellowship, Dr Okiror has assisted Uganda in moving from reactive healthcare approaches to proactive preparedness in the face of growing health threats. | | |
