Education Project Overview

Good Health and Well-Being Project Update

by Olivia Messina

For our current project, EDGE students are exploring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3: Good Health and Wellbeing. The goal is to promote healthcare for all that is equitable and inclusive. We are looking at how to conduct a quality community survey that is an accurate demographic representation of the population. Each student got to select their own health-related topic and then craft a research question that they will answer by analyzing data collected via interview. We studied the practices used to conduct morally correct and qualitative interviews such as informed consent and designing open-ended questions. Students created their own sets of questions and then identified a plan to access the populations of people that align with their overarching research question. This is a great way for students to practice communication skills as well as practicing generating quality questions. This week students will start conducting their interviews and then learn how to organize their responses into data. They look forward to sharing their results with you.

EDGE Highlights

Stream Team

October 2nd

Led by Mrs. Carpenter, EDGE students participated in a Stream Team field trip to collect data and research the East Fork of Shoal Creek. Twice a year students visit the same location to do a variety of activities that collect data for the state of Missouri and help monitor the livelihood of the waterway. This is the fifth year of participating in this citizen science program. Data collection includes visual description of the site, vegetation, and flow rate of the water in the stream. Three different locations are chosen and students set up a net to collect any material (insects, fish, etc) that are stirred up when other students turn up the mud on the bottom of the creek with their feet. The collection net is taken to a special table where everything is examined. Basically anything that moves or is alive is picked up with tweezers and placed in an ice cube tray. The contents in the ice cube tray are identified using a laminated identification chart. Typical items include insects, frogs, larvae and an occasional fish or crawdad. Today one of the more interesting "discoveries" was a snake. The water level was a little low this trip, but as Mrs. Carpenter always says "no data to collect is still collecting a form of data!"

International Culinary

10 Ingredient Challenge

The International Culinary Class participated in a 10 ingredient challenge lab. We created a list of ten food items that most people would have on hand at home - chicken breast, eggs, rice, canned tomatoes, onions, garlic, bell peppers, beans, cheese, and olive oil. We then used AI, asking ChatGTP to generate recipes using only those ingredients. Students selected a recipe from the AI generated options and then adapted to their own taste. For example, we discovered that ChatGTP went a little overboard with onions in each recipe. Students made variations of the chicken with rice recipe and chicken enchiladas.
