EDGE International Travel

Greece - March 13-20, 2025

Thank you to everyone who was able to come to the Greece Information Night. We hope you are as excited for this incredible opportunity as we are. If you were unable to attend the session, you can access a video of the information shared by Squads Abroad through this link to the recording.

This Squads Abroad website provides a program overview, flight info, fees, deadlines, and registration information. Anyone who plans to attend, please register as soon as possible. The initial $200 deposit needs to be paid no later than October 15th. According to Squads Abroad’s policy, all fees are non-refundable, so be sure you’re committed to the trip before registering and making any payments.

Fundraising Opportunity

As mentioned in the meeting, here is a template for the Donate A Day Fundraiser. If a student can get each day in October sponsored, they could raise up to $496. This is not a school-sponsored fundraiser, so any donated funds would need to be managed by the individual. We do recommend sharing the Squads Abroad Fund link so individuals can donate directly to the student's Squads account.

Parent Volunteers Needed

Fundraising Committee

We would like to organize a group of parent volunteers to drive our fundraising efforts. If you are willing and able to help with this committee, please complete this Google Form by Wednesday, September 18. We hope to schedule a fundraising committee kick-off meeting as soon as possible.

Education Project Overview

Since the start of the school year, EDGE students have been actively engaging with UN Sustainable Development Goal #4: Equitable Access to Quality Education. Through the current phase of the project, students practiced essential research skills, starting by developing thoughtful research questions. Each student identified at least three credible sources to synthesize information, guiding them to begin answering their questions. Students then created detailed outlines and shared their findings in classroom presentations.

From these presentations, our teachers curated a selection of sources for all EDGE students to read in preparation for a Socratic Seminar, scheduled for Friday, September 13. In this collaborative discussion, students will deepen their understanding of the global education crisis and consider potential solutions.

The final phase of the project involves students creating action plans focused on the specific educational challenges they researched. The education project will conclude on Friday, September 20, before we move into our next learning cycle, focusing on SDG #3: Good Health and Wellbeing.

Leaving to Learn

Pharis Farm

On September 4th about 20 EDGE students participated in one of our real world learning experiences with our community partner - the Historic Pharis Farm. EDGE and the Pharis Farm have partnered for the past three years on a number of projects. This trip included planting fall crops in the garden beds and harvesting the sweet potatoes that EDGE students planted this past spring. Students weeded the beds and planted seeds and seedlings that were started in the EDGE indoor garden greenhouse. Roughly 50 pounds of sweet potatoes were harvested and will be donated to an area food bank for distribution. This summer 85 pounds of produce from the Pharis Farm garden was donated to the food bank. There was one particularly large sweet potato, weighing in at 6.7 pounds. We brought this behemoth back to EDGE and will use it in culinary class. Students also helped with seed collection from lettuce and radishes. These seeds will be planted in the EDGE indoor garden. Keeping with tradition, students were treated to an amazing lunch of fresh produce provided by the Pharis Farm staff. Favorites are typically fresh homemade bread, honey butter, apples and baked potatoes. All in all it was another great day making curricular connections in science class and providing and opportunity for community service.
