Upcoming Field Trip
Union Station - Maya Exhibition
February 10th - 9:15-1:30
Union Station is hosting Maya, The Exhibition; The Great Jaguar Rises.
For the first time in the United States, the mysteries of the Maya come to life. With nearly 300 artifacts, discover how the Maya live on today – in their inventions that continue to shape our daily lives and in the millions who carry on the Maya tradition in language and lineage. (Visit https://unionstation.org/event/maya/ for complete details.) Students should plan to bring a sack lunch or money to purchase lunch at a nearby food court.
Student Learning
UN Sustainable Development Goal #16
EDGE students are currently learning about UN Sustainable Development Goal #16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

During this learning cycle, students are working in small groups to research a topic related to the justice system. Each group will write a script and develop a segment to be joined with other groups’ segments to create documentaries inspired by UN SDG #16. This week, students are working on their deep dive research. As they conduct independent research, students will also be working collaboratively to connect ideas between various sources to identify the complexities and varying perspectives of the issues they are exploring. In the upcoming weeks, students will be working on script writing, storyboard creating, videoing, and editing footage. We are looking forward to sharing the completed documentary later this semester.

Students in Geometry, Algebra 2 and Stats will all have competencies updated in PowerSchool by February 1st. Please be sure to check PowerSchool and have a conversation with your student about their progress in math so far this semester.

Geometry students are currently working on Triangles and Proofs. They have taken two checkpoints that covered classifying triangles, using properties of equilateral and isosceles triangles to solve for missing angles and side lengths, using pythagorean theorem and its converse.

Algebra 2 students are working on solving equations and working with Functions. They have taken a checkpoint that covered solving systems of equations, quadratic equations, absolute value equations and square root equations. Students will focus the next couple of weeks on composing functions and inverse functions.

Stats students just finished a unit on collecting data and are going to start a unit on Probability.

Even though we do not penalize students for not completing their practices, math is a subject that needs to be practiced daily. Geometry and Algebra 2 students have weekly delta math practices, and stats students typically have Check your Understanding problems. These practices are essential to learning the concepts being taught in sessions.
