Biology students will be participating in “Plant Mars Challenge.” This is a global science experiment where students receive soil similar to that on Mars. Students will research soil fertility and vegetable crops. They will then design and conduct an experiment using the Mars soil to determine how crops can be grown for a long-duration mission. The students lab results will be sent to NASA to help scientists understand how Mars soil can provide sustainable crops. https://plantthemoon.com/challenge/
AP Environmental Science students are designing a garden for LHS, Pharis Farms or at home that fits with the SGD Responsible Consumption and Production. Students will be researching soil quality around the school and specific crop needs. They will be presenting their design, purpose and reasoning at Exhibition Night. The end goal is to implement one of the gardens during the hunger project later in the semester.
Chemistry students are comparing and contrasting ionic and covalent bonds. They have been presented with a murder mystery and are analyzing substances found on the scene. Once they determine what type of compound the mystery substance is they will be able to determine the cause of death.
Physics students are working on solving linear kinematic equations of velocity, displacement, time, and acceleration. Students will work their way up to be able to solve equations using a catapult they have built. Resources and guidance will be provided by the “Engineering Tomorrow” Organization.
