September 20th - International Culinary Students to City Market
EDGE culinary arts students visited the City Market in downtown Kansas City. During our visit to the City Market we picked up spices, vegetables and other fresh ingredients from a variety of shops and bakeries. Local Pig gave the students an amazing demonstration on how they break down chickens and students were able to practice this technique with guidance by a professional. EDGE wants to send a big thank you to Local Pig and Pigwich for their outstanding hospitality and providing a unique real work opportunity for our students.

October 10th - Life Below Water: KC Zoo and Aquarium
EDGE had a "Leave to Learn Day," as we took an adventure to the Kansas City Zoo. Students are currently working on academic research projects focused on the United Nations sustainability goal of "Life Under Water", many of which include finding solutions to helping keep marine ecosystems safe and healthy. We had some time to explore the zoo at large but a majority of our time was spent in the new 650,000 gallon aquarium that just opened about a month ago. Students looked for specific connections to their Life Under Water projects. Thank you to the Kansas City Zoo for their school field trip program which allows students in Clay and Jackson Counties to attend the zoo for free on pre planned field trips. We took over 80 students to the zoo for no entrance fee. It was a beautiful day to explore the zoo and gain some hands on knowledge for our projects.

October 4th - Evan Harmon
EDGE students had the opportunity to visit with Evan Harmon on a live Zoom call from Germany. Evan was an EDGE student the last two years and is currently living in Germany as an exchange student with the help of a program from Rotary International. Evan described going to school in Germany and what he is enjoying about living abroad. Multiple students asked questions about participating in a similar Rotary International program to study in another country during high school. It was great to see Evan again!
October 5th
Ms. Christian Winn
EDGE hosted Christian Winn - Liberty Public School Career Navigator with Network 53 - for a great presentation on building their resume. Christian gave the students some helpful suggestions on building a successful resume and students started working on their resumes in SchoolLinks.
Project Updates

Students are working on the UN Sustainability Goal: Life Under Water. Students have studied the resources the ocean provides, researched an environmental problem that is associated with an oceanic ecosystem, researched policies associated with the sustainability of the ocean and are currently developing arguments for their policies and modifying a sustainable technology. Students will be creating a physical prototype of their modified technology.

Chemistry
Students started a new project where they have to come up with a new metal to use in their can production due to unethical mining of the current metal. Students will be learning about the properties of elements and materials and how to use the periodic table as a tool.

Biology
Students are studying ocean ecosystems and how they are affected by a researched environmental issue. Students will modify an existing technology to remediate the harmful effects of this issue.

Physics
Students are modifying a technology like radar and sonar in order to mitigate environmental problems found in oceanic habitats.

AP Environmental Science
Students are finishing up their Oceans In Action Project. Students have been studying the population and ecology of their island. A Town Hall was held and students voted to allow an Oil Company and/or Salmon Aquaculture Farm to start building on their island.

‌
Geometry
Students did a great job presenting their books to EPiC elementary students. They are currently working on a new unit called building blocks of geometry and are challenged to take pictures of mathematical concepts they see around them. This week’s challenge is symmetry.

Algebra 2
Students are currently working on a project to finish up their linear systems unit. Students are tasked to develop products that they can sell to help fundraise money for their trips. Students need to think about constraints and come up with a solution on how to best maximize their profits. I am excited to see the final product.

Pre-Calc
Students are working hard to wrap their heads around piecewise functions and characteristics of functions in general. They will demonstrate their competency of these concepts and skills by working on a roller coaster project.

Probability and Statistics
Students are currently learning about transformation of data and how knowing that illustrates why the wealth gap exists and is hard to close.
