September 2023 Newsletter
Save the Date: September 20th

We are actively planning for and promoting the Spring 2024 Panama Service Trip. Mark your calendars for the upcoming information session on September 20th at 6:00pm at Liberty High School in The View. Also, we're asking that all interested families complete the EDGE Panama Trip Interest Form prior to the session. Thanks!
Project Updates
This week we wrapped up our unit on Equitable Access to Quality Education with a Socratic Seminar about AI and Education. Next week, students will begin the presearch stages of our next unit over UN Sustainable Development Goal #14: Life Below Water - "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development".
Field Trip Recaps
EDGE students have participated in several off campus learning opportunities.

‌
‌
September 6th - Pharis Farm
Guest speakers discussed how terracing, which is present on the farm, can reduce soil erosion. Another speaker discussed how to bridge the gap between science and humanities by telling stories everyone can relate to. While there students performed maintenance and pruned the apple orchard trees.

September 6th - EPiC Elementary
Studio 2 parents were asked to identify a word that described their child. EDGE students brainstormed with the Studio 2 students to identify ways to visually represent their words in a portrait.

September 8th - Joey FineRhyme - ReGeneration: Climate Change
At an event hosted by the Midwest Trust Center at Johnson County Community College, FineRhyme spoke to students in the language of hip-hop and offered real-life solutions for the ecological and equity impacts of climate change.

September 13th - Pharis Farm
Students from the American and World History classes learned from guest speakers discussing how to use historical artifacts to tell a story.

Special Guests
‌

September 12th
Saheed Adeoye
EDGE students had the opportunity to learn from guest speaker Saheed Adeoye about artificial intelligence and its impact on education, employment, and day-to-day life. Thank you to Mr. Adeoye for spending time in EDGE and sharing your experiences and insights with our students and staff!
September 13th
A4LE (Association for Learning Environments)
A panel of students and staff engaged in a conversation about the EDGE mission and vision.
‌

Chemistry
Students are studying models of the atom to determine whether a painting was forged or the original.

Biology and Culinary Students
Biology and culinary students combined their knowledge of macromolecules and food safety to complete a simulation food poisoning lab to figure out which food caused the EDGE teachers to get “sick”.

AP Environmental Science
Students were given jobs on an Island and had to write a Individual Position paper on whether or not their Island needs companies to bring in jobs based on the projected population growth of the Island.

Geometry
Students just finished up their logical reasoning unit. In the unit we studied conditional statements. Students will use their knowledge of conditional statements to write their own version of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff, and will travel to EPiC to read their books to Kindergartners September 26th.

Algebra 2
Students are wrapping up their unit on Arithmetic and Geometric sequences. They took a checkpoint September 7th and are practicing their technical writing skills by completing a written assessment over sequences.

Pre-Calc
Students are working on algebraic foundations. Those skills will be needed as we delve deeper into different algebraic concepts.

Probability and Statistics
Students started the year with the question: Can Joy Smell Parkinson? They used this question to see how Statistics plays a role in answering different types of questions. Students have learned that data can be used to mislead and confuse if you do not know what to look for and what questions to ask.

Scheduling Reminder
Students must complete their schedules for the week and notify teachers of conflicts on Monday. We strongly recommend building your schedule on Friday or over the weekend for the upcoming week. Then on Monday morning, check the punchlist for updates and make any necessary adjustments to your schedule.
Complete weekly schedules, including Out of EDGE, Flex, and Flow times, are essential for security, academic, and planning purposes. Making a complete schedule every week is NOT optional.
