Neighborhood Cleanup - Saturday, April 26th

Please join us at the Clubhouse at 9 am

We are celebrating Fort Lauderdale Cares Day with an Edgewood Neighborhood Cleanup! This is a great opportunity to make Edgewood an even better place by picking up trash on our roads.

Everyone is invited to gather at the Edgewood Clubhouse at 9 a.m. to pick up trash grabbers, gloves, and garbage bags. From there, we’ll head to the neighborhood hot spots to make the largest impact.

The ECA earns credits through the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Green Your Routine program (that translates into $$) for cleanups and other positive City activities. For questions or finding out how to get more involved, text ECA Secretary, Dorie Cox at 305-393-3134.

ECA donated our Green Your Routine money to New River Middle School to help support the building of their living seawall. Their efforts were featured in the Miami Herald! Congratulations.

Supporting Mangroves: A Sustainable Investment in Fort Lauderdale’s Future

Living in Fort Lauderdale means living alongside water—and that makes mangroves one of our community’s most important natural assets. These coastal forests are more than just part of the scenery; they are essential to protecting our neighborhoods, strengthening our environment, and building a more sustainable future.

Mangroves act as natural storm barriers, helping reduce flooding and erosion during hurricanes and king tides—something South Florida residents know all too well. Their roots stabilize shorelines and absorb wave energy, offering protection that would otherwise require costly infrastructure. Just as importantly, mangroves improve water quality by filtering pollutants and provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife that support our local ecosystem and economy.

So how can we, as Fort Lauderdale residents, help support mangrove restoration and preservation?

1. Get Involved Locally

Volunteer with local environmental groups that focus on coastal restoration. Organizations like the Broward County Environmental Planning & Community Resilience Division and local nonprofits often host mangrove planting and shoreline cleanup events. These hands-on opportunities make a direct impact.

2. Protect What We Have

Avoid damaging mangroves when boating, kayaking, or fishing. Follow local guidelines and respect protected areas. Even small disturbances can harm these sensitive ecosystems.

3. Support Smart Development

Advocate for sustainable coastal planning and policies that preserve natural shorelines. Supporting green infrastructure and nature-based solutions helps ensure mangroves remain part of our long-term resilience strategy.

4. Reduce Pollution

What flows into our storm drains often ends up in our waterways. Reducing fertilizer use, properly disposing of waste, and limiting single-use plastics all help protect mangrove habitats.

5. Spread Awareness

Education is a powerful tool. Share what you’ve learned with neighbors, friends, and community groups. The more people understand the value of mangroves, the stronger the support for protecting them.

Mangroves are a natural defense system, a climate solution, and a vital part of South Florida’s identity. By taking small, meaningful steps, we can all play a role in preserving and restoring these ecosystems—ensuring that Fort Lauderdale remains resilient, vibrant, and sustainable for generations to come.

Edgewood Neighbor News:

Former neighbor, Jim Hammond, had a great phone conversation with 101-year-old Scotty Packard (who turns 102 in April). They all formerly lived on SW 31st Street. Scotty has moved north to live near family and Jim and Shelly Bradshaw are in the midst of moving to Seattle,

“Scotty Packard is doing pretty well. He still has his great appetite and he laughed a lot on the phone! His granddaughter is there with him often and he really likes the staff where he is living.

He wanted me to make sure to let everyone know he misses all his friends in Fort Lauderdale and send his love to you all! He joked about getting on a plane for his 103rd birthday, and we all have a reunion in Seattle”
