Young Leaders Adopt Valley View Sports Park
Through EDHCSD's Adopt-A-Park/Trail Program

Today, February 1, 2021, Girl Scout Troop 692 and Cub Scout Pack 550 successfully adopted Valley View Sports Park making them the first adopters since the launch of the program! These young volunteers are tomorrow's leaders, they embody the program's slogan "Love Where You Live" and we are thankful for their one-year commitment.

EDHCSD's Adopt-a-Park/Trial Programlaunched late 2020, as a way for groups and individuals to spend quality time together in the great outdoors, and feel good about their contribution to park beautification. The goal of the Adopt-A-Park/Trail is to offer opportunities for people to be involved in the community in a way that builds a sense of civic pride, appreciation and awareness of our parks and trails.

Community Pool Re-Plastering Now Complete!
February 2021 update

The District is excited to announce that the Community Pool re-plastering is now complete! Pool chemicals are balanced and heating has begun. A few minor punch list items remain for the pool decking, but those items will not interfere with scheduling pool use. Along with the pool deck and pool interior, we've taken this time to install a new outdoor shower and upgrade the pool restrooms. Oak Ridge High School will be the first to test the waters, with High School Swim practice beginning Monday, February 8th. At the end of the month the District will kick off the Spring TAZ Swim Clinic. Stay tuned as those sign-ups are coming soon!

Other exciting news, EDHCSD Aquatics Supervisor, Kate Miller, has been welcoming past lifeguards back for the upcoming season -welcome back team! Aquatic offerings and our April Pool's Day event Grand Re-Opening can be found next month in our Spring Community Resource & Recreation Guide.

Bass Lake Stroll
Photo and article by John Kipping, Published Botanist

A couple of days ago we decided to visit newly opened to the public park surrounding an old reservoir operated by our local water purveyor. Bass Lake Park is now part of El Dorado Hills Community Service District. The shallow, protected waters attract as many as four dozen naturalized mute swans. We noted a group of resting double-crested cormorants of the dam's gate control tower. The day was comfortably warm and the left bird was gular-flapping for cooling by evaporation. The swans were accompanied by numerous widgeons, and a smattering of coots and pie-billed grebes. The dam consists mainly of river cobbles mined from  Pleistocene  American River deposits near Folsom and Rancho Cordova. 3 and 4 show lovely crustose lichens, probably Xanthoparmelia cumberlandica, patiently working their magic transmutation of inorganic rocks into life.

The oak glen was alive with nuthatches, titmice, flickers, acorn woodpeckers, kinglets, juncos and scrub jays. The open areas had both Say's and black phoebes, western bluebirds, and golden-crowned sparrows. The very large, western gray squirrels harvest the heavy cones and then shuck the strong, barbed woody scales to reveal the large nutritious seeds. The pile appeared about two feet deep and twenty by twelve feet across. Many generations of rodents feasted here.

We loved the park and look forward to seeing the Districts plans for the park come to fruition.

Trail Etiquette and Safety Awareness
Share + Be Aware

The District believes that Parks Make Life Better and is committed to preserving open spaces and natural resources as well as making outdoor recreation safe, accessible and welcoming for all ages, stages and abilities. This event aims to increase standard trail etiquette and safety awareness together with sponsors, partners, community involvement and with the campaign, Share & Be Aware. As outdoor recreation continues to gain momentum with both new and seasoned users during the pandemic, education on standard trail etiquette and safety awareness will be key.

Save the Date: March 27, 2021
Where: New York Creek Trail

Special thanks to trail advocate and EDH resident, Jeff Barker, who is working with the District on this event. If you would like to sponsor or partner with us, please email April West, Communications Specialist at [email protected].

Community Park Large Playground Change
Playgrounds are fun for everyone!

Community Park's 5-12 yr Playground was fully renovated is past Summer. During installation, it was recognized the spiral slide had a few issues and needed replaced. Along with that, we noticed that during those hot summer days, the long slide was directly facing into the sun. The contractor, Miracle Playsystems, committed to making it right, and corrected the issues this past week. The musical chimes were also moved closer to the benches to allow for better accessibility. If you haven't already, be sure to come out and enjoy one of the best play areas in EDH!
