Alabama's June unemployment rate drops to 4.6 percent
Alabama's unemployment rate continues to plummet.
The state's preliminary June jobless rate was 4.6 percent, down from 4.9 percent in May. A year ago, the unemployment rate was 5.8 percent.
Gov. Kay Ivey, in a statement, said the state is only two-tenths of a percentage point away from catching up to the national unemployment rate.
Shapiro Metals opens second Alabama recycling plant in Decatur
Shapiro Metals recently launched its 11th North American plant with the opening of a new 20,000-square-foot facility in Decatur.
The plant, which recycles metals from aerospace, trailer manufacturing, automotive and medical device customers, is located on 815 Old Trinity Road. It is Shapiro's second foray into Alabama, where the company also has a facility in Mobile.
Shapiro CEO and President Bruce Shapiro said they expanded in Decatur because there is an unmet need from manufacturers and customers throughout the region.
Tuscaloosa County auto supplier on track to open high-tech facility
VANCE, Alabama - A Spanish auto supplier is moving forward with a $30 million wheel assembly factory in Tuscaloosa County, a project that will create more than 70 jobs.
Truck & Wheel Group
plans a 127,000-square-foot, highly automated facility in Vance that will assemble, sequence and balance wheels for delivery to automotive production lines.
This is the first U.S. operation for the company, which wants to expand its market as a Tier 1 supplier.
Sylacauga City Council approves tax abatement for Pursell Agri-Tech; 22 jobs to be created
SYLACAUGA, Ala. - The Sylacauga City Council approved a tax abatement request from Pursell Agri-Tech, LLC during its scheduled meeting Tuesday night.
The company is set to open a fertilizer coatings plant which will result in the creation in 22 jobs in Sylacauga over the next three years and a capital investment of $8,450,000.
Mayor Jim Heigl is excited about the new industry and jobs coming to his city. "22 more jobs, along with all the jobs coming to the Hwy. 280 development means this area is growing, and that's something for the people of Sylacauga to be excited about," he said. "The technology that Pursell Agri-Tech is bringing in will be a big plus to our city."

ULA wins contract to launch space plane

United Launch Alliance has been selected to launch the first two missions of the Dream Chaser space plane atop Atlas V rockets assembled in Decatur.
The Dream Chaser spacecraft has been under development by Sierra Nevada Corporation for more than a decade.
The vehicle launches vertically atop a rocket and lands horizontally on a conventional runway.
