Information about the 2019 Solutions Summit is available here.

Sunday, April 28, 2019, 9:00am - 4:00pm, is EDPMA's Committee Day! Workshops are open to all Summit Registrants, not just members of EDPMA!

Once again, EDPMA is opening its committee workshops to all Summit registrants, both members and nonmembers. Sunday's workshops are a great way to learn what EDPMA is working on and why you should join the association. Attendees will hear from committee members and outside speakers on important issues facing the business of emergency medicine. Competitors work together to solve problems faced by everyone in the industry.

The Federal Health Policy Committee will discuss federal legislation that impacts your bottom line such as bills that support or undermine the Affordable Care Act, ban balance billing for out-of-network care, address value-based payment under Medicare, make it easier for states to apply for both 1332 and 1115 waivers, and more.

The State Regulatory and Insurance Committee will discuss state-level legislation including balance billing legislation, Medicaid expansion and waivers, and the prudent layperson standard.

The Quality, Coding & Documentation Committee will address Medicaid audits; internal and external audits; outsource coding; collapsing ED codes; MIPS; documentation of medical history; additional worked up planned; and commercial policies that down code based on diagnosis.

The Provider Enrollment Committee will discuss issues such as MACs, best practices, revalidation issues, the time allowed to process enrollments and revalidations, and EDPMA's Fall Workshop on Provider Enrollment.

Many attendees find these informal workshops to be a great way to learn from experts and peers on the issues of the day while getting to know leaders in the industry. The workshops are an integral part of the Summit. Don't miss out! Please make sure your travel plans allow you to attend the Sunday workshop sessions.

New Member Spotlight:  Bayside Emergency Physicians

Bayside Emergency Physicians (BEP) is a democratic and privately-owned group of Board-Certified Emergency Medicine physicians located in St. Petersburg, FL. Bayside has approximately 55 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners supporting the emergency department of St. Anthony's hospital and the surrounding area. For more information on Bayside Emergency Physicians, please click  here .

Excerpts from a conversation with Rebecca (Becca) Cook, M.B.A. in Healthcare Analytics, Practice Manager

Ms. Cook joined Bayside Emergency Physicians in 2016 as Practice Manager and has worked in healthcare and emergency medicine for over ten years. Ms. Cook manages all back-office functions including payroll, benefits, credentialing, scheduling and some areas of recruitment. Becca received her MBA with a specialty in healthcare analytics as she recognized the increasing importance of data analysis in the healthcare arena. Becca has found that these skills are immensely helpful in performing her day-to-day responsibilities.

Becca and the entire team at Bayside Emergency Physicians (BEP) pride themselves on having created a highly effective, high-quality, and patient-centered practice. BEP has one of the most advanced technological medical facilities in the area and a state-of-the-art Emergency Center at St. Anthony's Hospital.  Bayside always looks for qualified, Board Certified emergency medicine physicians to join their practice. Located in the heart of Tampa Bay, St Petersburg offers a multitude of beautiful beaches, a thriving downtown night life, and family friendly activities for all ages.

Bayside Emergency joined EDPMA upon the recommendation of the group's Medical Director, Dr. David Ball. While attending another association's conference, Dr. Ball recognized some of the many benefits offered by EDPMA. Most impressively were EDPMA's state and federal legislative activities, announcements on updated rules and regulations, and a variety of practice management resources available to the association's members. Ms. Cook said, "Like many physician groups, we experience payers continually adjusting reimbursement without prior discussion or consent. Specifically, automatic downcoding, is one of the big challenges currently facing groups in the emergency medicine field and ours is no exception. These tactics impact our business practice and patients collectively." Becca also commented that EDPMA's "Toolbox" resources are a great overall resource, providing model letters and detailed information on specific legislative issues.

Shortly after joining EDPMA, Becca became a member of Quality Coding and Documentation Committee. Based on her experiences thus far, she is encouraging her physician management team to also join committees as this is a key benefit of EDPMA membership. Being part of a committee enables every member to gain expertise in that particular area. Most, if not all, fellow members are willing to take their time to get to know new members and answer any questions about the committee, legislative issues, or regulatory actions.

Join an EDPMA Committee!

We encourage you to join an EDPMA committee.  The real work at EDPMA is done at the committee level. Committee members work together in a variety of ways including:
  • discussing the impact of the ACA, its possible repeal, and changes to Medicaid that impact ED practice groups,
  • organizing meetings with CMS officials on provider enrollment,
  • drafting letters to state-level policymakers on balance billing,
  • identifying speakers on ED best practices,
  • meeting with commercial payers about problematic downcoding policies,
  • developing a toolbox to help survive an audit,
  • preparing for Medicare reimbursement under the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System, and
  • building strong business relationships.
Experts work side-by-side with newcomers, new leaders shine, and everyone's contribution is greatly appreciated.  Many members report that insight shared on committee conference calls is one of the most important and unique benefits of their EDPMA membership. We invite you to join one of EDPMA's committees. Information about each committee is available here.  (Don't be shy: if you want, you can just listen in.)
