Eight New Opportunities at EDPMA in 2020

As we move deeper into the on-line world during the pandemic, we wanted to make sure you are aware of all the new educational and networking opportunities at EDPMA:

New COVID-19 Resources Page:
There are a wide variety of resources on EDPMA's COVID-19 resources page, including:

* Regularly updated memos on telehealth, coding, small business loans, issues around attestation for provider relief funds, and more from EDPMA's Committee chairs and EDPMA's consultant, Hart Health Strategies;
* Guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers from Disease Control on many topics, including coding, provider relief, Medicare relief, telehealth, waivers and more;
* State-Level Resources addressing the pandemic;
* Links to Congressional legislation addressing provider relief and legislative summaries;
* Key EDPMA News Alerts and Updates; and
* EDPMA Advocacy Letters on COVID-19.

This resources page is regularly updated and is accessed from either the Resources tab or from a link under "Latest News and Updates" on the EDPMA home page.

New Committees:
Although EDPMA committees are not new, we do have a new committee!  The Practice Management Committee is overseeing our work on practice management, APM's, rural issues, telehealth, provider enrollment, legal issues, and data gathering.   Some of our established committees have taken on new issues.  The Membership and Marketing Committee is now tackling how to improve the marketing of EDPMA and its member benefits.

Committee participation is one of the most unique and important member benefits that is open to all members.  You can join one of our seven committees and immediately take part in the conversation about our federal and state advocacy, coding and documentation, practice management, educational opportunities, the 2021 Solutions Summit, and EDPMA membership and marketing.  Many committees are using ZOOM, where members can see presentations and everyone's beautiful face (if you so choose).  Monthly committee meetings are a great place to share your questions and your solutions.  It is where much of the networking takes place.  If you haven't joined one yet, join a committee today.

New Webinar Opportunities:
EDPMA held a webinar on COVID-19 provider relief, telehealth, and Medicare changes and will be holding more webinars in the near future on the Future of Emergency Medicine and more.  Our webinars are free to members.  We know you are busy, so you can access  old webinars under the Education tab on the EDPMA home page.  And, as you will see below, members can now sponsor webinars and introduce the presenter.   Perhaps there is a topic and speaker that will educate EDPMA members while also highlighting the expertise of one of the employees at your company.  You can do this as well!

New Roundtables:
EDPMA's new roundtables allow members to focus on one important and timely topic and discuss it with experts in the business of emergency medicine.  It is a great informal place to get your questions answered - or to offer your solutions.   We have held two roundtables -  on Telehealth in a Pandemic and Reimbursement for Uninsured COVID-19 Claims  - and both had about 100 registrants!  It's time to take advantage of this hot new membership benefit.  Perhaps you have a topic that you would like addressed in a roundtable.  Now, for a very low price, you can sponsor an EDPMA Roundtable, choose the topic, welcome participants, and lead the discussion.  More information on this sponsorship is available in the articles below.

New EDPMA Corporate Partnerships and Sponsorships:
Many of our EDPMA sponsorships and partnerships were based on the Solutions Summit.  In addition to the new webinar and roundtable sponsorships, we have developed a new set of 2020 corporate partnerships that include workshop registrations, newsletter ads, and webinar and roundtable sponsorships.  EDPMA greatly appreciates our corporate partners' willingness to ensure that all EDPMA members continue to receive high-level educational and networking opportunities.  Our corporate partners are listed on our home page.  Become a corporate partner today!

New Virtual Parties and Chats:
EDPMA is offering some new virtual parties.  Don't miss out later today when we have our virtual Cinco de Mayo party at 6 p.m.  Registration closes at 2 p.m. Eastern today.

Don't forget, you can also chat with other members of EDPMA if you join the EDPMA LinkedIn member group.  Learn more about this chat room below.

New Virtual Workshop:
The Education Committee is busy developing a virtual workshop for this summer!   The workshop will focus on the new and unique issues you are facing today while also pulling exciting sessions from the 2020 Solutions Summit agenda.  Don't forget to submit your application to speak at an upcoming workshop, webinar, or Solutions Summit 2021 through the link under "Latest News & Updates" on EDPMA's home page.

New Look for EDPMA Newsletters and Website:
The Membership and Marketing Committee is busy creating a fresh new look for our website and newsletters.  Don't forget, the current website contains a large number of "Members Only" resources, including in-depth toolboxes on:
  • Emergency Department Facts and Statistics
  • Out-of-Network Reimbursement Toolbox - State
  • Out-of-Network Reimbursement Toolbox - Federal

New Member Spotlight: International Board of of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES)

The International Board of of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) provides training and certification that empowers medical professionals to better understand the needs of individuals with cognitive disorders including those with autism, ADHD, sensory disorders, dementia, mental health, dyslexia and other special needs. The IBCCES has been providing certifications in healthcare, education and other industries since 2001 and offers over 20 certification programs. For more information on IBCCES, please click  here .

Excerpts from a conversation with Meredith Tekin, President, International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards

Meredith has worked in marketing, communications, project management and operations in the non-profit, corporate and healthcare arena for a number of years. Meredith has been President of IBCCES for over two years, and was drawn to its social impact and mission to improve the lives of individuals with cognitive disorders. The IBCCES Advisory Board includes clinical specialists, special education experts, and self advocates on the autism spectrum who contribute to IBCCES' programs. The goal of IBCCES and its board is to enable professionals to provide more effective services to children and adults with cognitive disorders by educating on best practices and improving quality of care. For example, individuals with autism vary widely, but many individuals have communication challenges, sensitivity to touch and different reactions to pain and discomfort, making it necessary for medical professionals to understand these differences in order to provide effective treatment.

Over the past year, Meredith and her team identified a need for training in emergency departments, as people with autism are more likely to visit an emergency department and the EM professionals are less likely to have this specific training. Thus, IBCCES performed pilot testing in a New York-based hospital and found the autism program helped the emergency department staff be more efficient, better understand these patients and avoid escalating situations. The goal is to bring this program to hospitals nationwide, so IBCCES started researching ways to connect with leaders in emergency medicine. Through this research, IBCCES discovered EDPMA and decided to become a member.

Meredith and her team have found EDPMA to be very useful in providing opportunities to connect with EM professionals, share best practices and gain a deeper understanding of key advocacy and reimbursement issues. IBCCES wants to stay in the forefront of issues impacting emergency medicine and finds the advocacy information provided by EDPMA particularly helpful. And, with COVID-19 adding to the changing landscape in emergency medicine, IBCCES has also found the use of telehealth and EDPMA's leadership in this area to be especially helpful.

Meredith and her team plan on participating in EDPMA's virtual Webinars and Roundtable events on a regular basis. And, they will connect with emergency medicine professionals through EDPMA's LinkedIn members-only group and public page. Meredith is pleased to have found EDPMA earlier this year especially in this time of a global pandemic.

Join an EDPMA Committee Today!

It's time to look for alternative networking opportunities since the 2020 EDPMA Solutions Summit has been cancelled. EDPMA's committees offer a great opportunity to hear from experts in the business, work on common problems together, highlight your own expertise, and get to know others in the business.  Most committees have open membership where any member can join.  Committee membership should not be seen as a new responsibility you need to fit into your busy schedule.  In fact, you can skip meetings when they are inconvenient and can just listen in if you do not want to participate. So, please do not be shy. Join us!

Committee members work together in a variety of ways including:
  • Urging the federal government to provide streamlined COVID-19 relief to emergency physician groups,
  • Developing federal and state proposals addressing surprise gaps in insurance,
  • Advocating against prospective down coding,
  • Developing best practices around the Merit-based Incentive Payment System, coding issues,  Alternative Payment Models, and audit preparation,
  • Identifying speakers for conferences, workshops, and webinars, and
  • Building strong business relationships.
Experts work side-by-side with newcomers, new leaders shine, and everyone's contribution is greatly appreciated. Many members report that insight shared on committee conference calls is one of the most important and unique benefits of their EDPMA membership. We understand your schedules are busy, but we need you to join the committee if you want to know when and how to join the calls! Please email  [email protected] if you would like to be added to a committee distribution list.
