The Power of Student Data: Unlocking Support for Our Schools

charts and data

As we continue our mission to support students and educators, we want to highlight a critical element that often goes unnoticed: the importance of student data. In today’s educational landscape, access to accurate and comprehensive data is not just beneficial; it’s essential for securing the funding, resources, and support our schools need to thrive.

Why Student Data Matters

1. Informed Decision-Making

Data provides valuable insights into student performance, attendance, and engagement. By analyzing this information, educators and administrators can make informed decisions about curriculum adjustments, resource allocation, and targeted interventions. When schools understand their students' needs, they can tailor their approaches to foster better learning outcomes.

2. Attracting Funding

Funding agencies increasingly require data-driven evidence to justify the allocation of financial resources. Schools equipped with robust data and data sharing agreements can demonstrate their needs and successes, making a compelling case for grants and funding opportunities. This is particularly crucial for programs aimed at supporting underrepresented or struggling students who need additional resources to succeed.

3. Enhancing Academic Support

Access to student data allows educators to identify trends and patterns that can inform academic support initiatives. By partnering with schools to share and analyze data, we can develop targeted programs that address specific challenges, such as literacy gaps or math proficiency. This proactive approach not only benefits individual students but also elevates overall school performance.

Building Partnerships for Data Accessibility

To harness the full potential of student data, we must foster strong partnerships with schools. This collaboration involves:

  • Transparent Data Sharing: Establishing clear protocols for data sharing that respect student privacy while ensuring schools and providers have access to the information they need to support school needs.
  • Joint Data Analysis: Working together to analyze data effectively, utilizing shared expertise to draw meaningful conclusions that can inform strategic planning.
  • Continuous Feedback Loops: Creating mechanisms for ongoing feedback between EDceptional and schools, allowing us to adapt our support based on data insights.

Access to student data is a pivotal factor in securing the local and national support necessary for our schools to flourish. By prioritizing data partnerships, we can better meet the needs of our students and create an educational environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Together, let’s advocate for a sector data-driven approach that empowers our schools and enhances the educational experience for all students.

Improving Literacy for Rochester Students

Literacy underpins all other learning and students who struggle to read or write face cascading academic challenges in all subjects. EDceptional has made strategic efforts to improve literacy during the school day, and now is partnering to strengthen literacy programming during out of school time.

Clianda Florence

Focused out of school programming can measurably improve student achievement, strengthen home links and accelerate overall academic success. Sebrone O. Johnson, CEO, and Clianda Florence, founder Get L.I.T. (Liberating Literacy in Transformation) sat down with WHEC-TV Channel 10 on two occasions to discuss the critical need in Rochester - and how in-school instruction can be paired with out-of-school programming to make a difference.  Watch on WHEC or on YouTube.

Leadership in Action: Advancing Stronger Communities

CEO Sebrone O. Johnson represented EDceptional at two key conferences focused on nonprofit leadership and community impact.

As Board Chair and Eastern Region Trustee of Board Affiliates for the Urban League, he shared insights on building strong, effective boards and reducing nonprofit reliance on federal funding - critical steps toward long-term sustainability and empowerment.

He also joined the United Way of New York City Leadership Meeting, where Rochester’s data-driven approach to identifying community needs was featured as a model of innovation. During the discussion, he highlighted the My Wayfinder application and its growing role in removing barriers to essential resources for marginalized individuals.

Leadership in Action

It was an inspiring week of collaboration, strategic dialogue, and forward-thinking leadership - all focused on strengthening communities and shaping a more equitable future as we look ahead to 2026.

Rochester Beacon titled “Two Views on Charter Schools” (October 15, 2025):

Geoff Rosenberger, board member at Rochester Prep, and Rick Dollinger, retired judge and a former state senator, discuss the role and impact of charter schools in a recent Rochester Beacon Counterpoint story. Rosenberger asserts that charter schools offer choice and competition to traditional public education and maintain higher academic outcomes, even while facing significant resource constraints.

In Rochester, families have public school options and more than 30 percent of the city’s K-12 public school students already attend charter schools. Read the story here.
