WELCOME
to our Spring 2020 Newsletter

This semester has been challenging for all. COVID-19 has forced universities to move classes and programming online and we have been working diligently to support our students and faculty in the transition to online learning and teaching.

As we do at the end of every semester, we would like to highlight some of the recent awards and research that our students and faculty are a part of. Our faculty continue to receive national recognition for their excellence. Prof. Michal Lipson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Profs. Xiaofan Jiang and Dion Khodagholy were both awarded early Career awards from the National Science Foundation. Prof. Christine Hendon was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Our students and researchers are also in the spotlight. Postdoctoral Research Assistant, Ahmed Kord was selected by Forbes to join the 30 Under 30 Class of 2020, while five of our students and an alumnus received Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation.

Our department continues to grow and we are excited that Prof. James Anderson joined us in January; his research interests are optimal and robust control theory, mathematical optimization, and data privacy/sensitivity.

We hope that you are healthy and safe and we wish you the best with the rest of the Spring semester and beyond!
The pandemic has led to unprecedented and ongoing changes to daily life, including shelter-in-place orders, widespread closing of businesses and schools, and work-from-home and school-from-home at previously unknown levels. These changes in behavior are placing extraordinary demands on the internet .

Ethan Katz-Bassett will use the grant to measure the resilience of the internet. More information here .
James Anderson joined the EE Department after serving as a senior research scientist in Computing + Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. Prior to Caltech he held a Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford, where he was a member of St John's College and the Department of Engineering Science. More information here .
