Research and Internships

Annual Celebration of Research and Creative Activity

The annual Celebration of Research and Creative Activity highlights the work of students from all five of AUM’s Colleges. This celebration allows students to present posters and oral presentations about their research to faculty, staff, and fellow students. We hope to see you on April 26. Look for future emails regarding this celebration and other research symposiums on campus.

Faculty can apply for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (UGRCA) Mini-Grants

The Experiential Education and Engagement Center encourages and supports undergraduate research and creativity. The Provost has tasked us with administering funding for undergraduate research and creativity and are working towards this goal by providing mini-grants for faculty research or creative activity that involves undergraduate students. Review of proposals will be done by sub-groups of the Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity advisory committee.

Mini-Grants

Mini-Grant Highlight

Teaching Urban Line Dancing to Secondary Level Students

Dr. Erin Reilly received a mini-grant that allowed herself and four of her undergraduate students to present at the Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (ASAHPERD). Students learned about “urban” and “soul” dance culture and had the opportunity to teach their dances to students at the conference. Dr. Reilly’s proposal allowed these undergraduate students to gain exposure to a state organization and network with other students and professionals at a state-wide conference.

Peer Mentors & Advisors

Spring 2024 Peer Mentorship

This semester, we have 58 peer mentors mentoring in 85 courses. These mentors help students in classes they have already successfully completed. Mentors help students with coursework, lead class discussions, and help students find campus resources. The Central Advising office has four central advising peer mentors this semester.

Peer Mentor Highlight: Ashley Hallford

Major: Psychology and minor in Sociology

Favorite part about mentoring: I have always loved helping people with their school work and this program allows me to do it. I really enjoy watching people wrestle with a task, and then when that lightbulb moment hits, and they figure it out. I love knowing that I could be a part of helping them get there.

About me: I am currently preparing to take the GRE this spring and plan on attending AUM’s Master’s Program for Clinical Psychology in the Fall. When I am not watching Bravo or scrolling through TikTok, I am researching Ph.D. programs that align with my goal of becoming a marital and familial psychologist.

Experiential Education Week

To increase awareness of experiential learning, encourage faculty and staff to provide opportunities for students, and recruit students to participate in experiential learning activities, the Experiential Education and Engagement Center is hosting a series of events. Our first event, a panel on incorporating experiential learning, will feature faculty members describing their experiences on providing opportunities to students. The remainder of the events will highlight scholarships, peer mentorship, and the community engagement recognition.

Join the Service and Leadership Club (SLC)

Are you interested in serving others and raising awareness of needs and issues at AUM and in our community? Would you like to enhance your leadership skills? If so, please consider joining the Service and Leadership Club (SLC). The SLC was established Fall 2023 by a group of AUM peer mentors who wanted a more official way for other peer mentors and students to be involved in serving and engaging with our local and campus community. Additionally, club members strengthen their leadership skills through serving and gain new skills by facilitating and attending workshops and other development sessions. To join or learn more about the club, please email us at [email protected].
