EERI International is Coming to the Bay Area
Meet your friends and colleagues at the EERI International Annual meeting in San Francisco. The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute will hold its 68th Annual Meeting, April 5-8, 2016, in San Francisco. Registration and full program details are now available on the 2016 Annual Meeting website (http://2016am.eeri-events.org/). With a theme of "Beyond the Epicenter: Expanding Our Risk Perspective," the meeting program will delve into unanticipated effects, blind spots, and new insights in earthquake engineering.

March 15 Chapter Meeting Report on Concrete Buildings & Taiwan Earthquake
Concrete buildings with known design flaws continue to be responsible for a large percentage of earthquake fatalities. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake and recent Kaohsiung, Taiwan event highlight devastating failures of deficient concrete buildings. The EERI community is aware of the risk these structures pose and research projects have been undertaken to characterize the risk. The City of Los Angeles over the past two years has adopted the most aggressive policy for concrete buildings in the state. Are similar policies needed in the Bay Area? Come join the conversation!
Student Chapters from Northern California universities will join the meeting and share their progress for the upcoming Annual Meeting Seismic Design Competition. Following their presentations, Bill Holmes SE will provide a short talk to activate discussion around concrete building policy. EERI Northern California members who traveled to Taiwan in February will be in attendance at the meeting to provide commentary on their recent reconnaissance.

Join the Chapter Events Committee
Do you want to network with multi-disciplinary professionals in the Bay Area interested in disaster risk reduction? Do you have research and interest topics that you would like to develop through membership discussions? Consider participating with EERI-NC's Events Committee to select topics and organize lectures, social events, and field trips that highlight advances in areas related to earthquake risk reduction and resilience. The chapter meetings are held every other month, and field trips are organized once or twice a year to provide hands-on exposure to the region's newest in engineering policy. Currently, we are supporting the organization of four field trips for the EERI Annual Meeting to be held in San Francisco April 5-8. Help us create compelling chapter activities and engage with a diverse membership through the Events Committee! Contact Michael Germeraad at michaelg@abag.ca.gov for more information.

Northern California Chapter Strategic Plan
The new stated mission of the Chapter is to support people with a common interest in reducing earthquake impacts in Northern California. Our vision is for a dynamic and visible chapter with diverse membership and engaging events that helps members serve as leaders in the earthquake hazard mitigation field. Four specific goals are contained in the plan: (1) govern responsibly; (2) engage membership; (3) share knowledge; and (4) have impact.
The December Chapter meeting yielded great feedback on member interest in various activities that could bring life to this vision. Of the seven possible initiatives discussed, members in attendance expressed the most excitement about engagement with other organizations, engaging local students, and doing local trainings so even more EERI members can help with reconnaissance after future earthquakes. Keep an eye out for more details, and contact Sharyl Rabinovici, sjmr12@yahoo.com with your interest in leading or supporting one of these efforts.

School Earthquake Safety Initiative (SESI): Classroom Education and Outreach
Help educate schoolchildren about earthquakes and engineering! The EERI SESI Education and Outreach Subcommittee is leading a national effort to teach 4th and 12th graders about earthquake engineering, and we need your help. Several local EERI student chapters will be piloting earthquake engineering classroom lessons for 4th grade students in the Bay Area this spring and welcome your participation. EERI NC Chapter members can get involved in a variety of ways, including:
- Signing up for the mailing list, to stay informed about the project
- Connecting us with a Bay Area school or teacher who may be interested in having EERI members visit their classroom to deliver a lesson involving a hands-on earthquake engineering design challenge with shake-table testing.
- Participating in the delivery of these lessons to a local school. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with local EERI student chapters, who have been trained to teach the lesson in local classrooms.
Your participation is appreciated, as you will be assisting EERI SESI in advancing its mission to effect a tangible and positive difference in communities around the world, with the ultimate goal of protecting the lives of all who use school buildings. Education and outreach to inspire the next generation while developing relationships with teachers and school administrators is an important step to achieving this goal.
