Exploring EIFS from Its Roots: EIMA’s Insightful European Exchange | |
Because EIFS got its start retrofitting damaged buildings in Europe after the Second World War, understanding the industry from its place of origin offers unique perspectives. With this in mind, Stephen Sears, CEO of EIMA, recently traveled to Europe to meet with senior executives from the European Association for External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (EAE | ETICS), as well as representatives from Sto Corp. and Sika, two leading EIMA manufacturer board members.
The trip, centered around knowledge exchange, allowed for a deeper understanding of Europe’s evolving approaches to EIFS/ETICS and its applications. EAE is the leader in promoting EIFS/ETICS across Europe, where the system has long been valued for its energy efficiency, durability, and versatility in diverse climates. Engaging with these European counterparts provided valuable insights into the latest technologies, regulations, and practices shaping the industry.
Stephen’s discussions with Sto Corp. and Sika further emphasized the innovation at the core of EIFS. Both companies have strong European roots and continue to contribute to global advancements in EIFS technology. EIMA values and will maintain these relationships to ensure that North America remains aligned with global trends, facilitating the adoption of innovative techniques and materials.
This international collaboration underscores the global nature of the EIFS industry and EIMA’s commitment to advancing the system in the U.S. and beyond. As EIMA continues to engage with its European counterparts, the knowledge gained will help drive the future of EIFS, ensuring that the system remains a top choice for modern construction challenges.

EIMA continues to make significant strides in advancing the goals of its Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant. This initiative, designed to further promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability within the exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS) industry, has entered a critical phase, marked by key updates and milestones.
Bi-Monthly Meetings with the EPA
Since being selected as a grant recipient, EIMA has held productive bi-monthly meetings with the EPA, ensuring consistent collaboration and alignment on objectives. These meetings have been instrumental in maintaining momentum, addressing ongoing challenges, and solidifying the framework for the project’s next steps.
Request for Proposal (RFP) for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Provider
One of the pivotal elements of the EPA grant is the selection of a provider for the comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of EIFS products. EIMA issued a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) on October 14. The LCA will offer crucial insights into the environmental impact of EIFS products, enabling the industry to adopt more sustainable practices. The selection of an LCA provider is on track to be finalized by the end of 2024.
