There is one more week of virtual learning for all students. The face-to-face option begins Monday, October 19th. PSAT for 9th, 11th, and SAT for 12th graders will happen over a span of three days during the final week of October. Indigenous Peoples Day will be celebrated on Monday October 12th.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
The final week of October, we will be hosting PSAT and SAT testing. For these dates, the testing group must be in person on campus for testing purposes and all non-testers are required to attend school virtually. Testing students must arrive to campus by 7:30am.
The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT that's offered every October. It also serves as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards $2,500 scholarships annually to high-scoring 11th graders.
The SAT is a test meant to display college-readiness, by measuring key skills like: reading comprehension, computational ability, and clarity of expression. Students have the opportunity to earn scores that qualify them for SAT-Based Scholarships at Specific Schools is another way to win a scholarship money for SAT scores at specific colleges.
All non-testers will be virtual learners for these dates.

FRESHMAN PARENTS - MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Energy Institute will be hosting a virtual freshman parent meeting on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:00 PM. The first half of the meeting will include information about credits, how to read a transcript, graduation requirements, GPA, grades, college planning, internships, externships, and summer programs. The second half of the meeting will be a tech workshop about the HUB and PowerSchools. If a parent from another grade level wants to join, all are welcome. The information covered during the first half of the meeting will be similar to what was covered in previous years, though.

HEALTH RECORDS REMINDER
Dear students and families,
I hope everyone is off to a good start this year. My name is Jennifer Singh and I am EIHS' school nurse. Currently I am reviewing immunization records and am still missing immunization records from some students.
Whether you are attending in person or remote learning, you are required to turn in an immunization record. A signed or stamped immunization record with MD signature or clinic stamp is necessary.
This is due by Monday October 12, 2020, or your child will not be able to attend school or remote into the classes.

FREE MONEY FOR COLLEGE!
The federal government and many colleges use the FAFSA application to calculate how much financial aid you qualify for. The earlier you complete it, the better. Start your financial aid application now, at the link below; submit by January 15. 2021 to be eligible for the most financial aid money and a chance to win a $500 scholarship.
To complete financial aid, you will need all of the following parent and student information:
- Social Security Number (If applicable)
- 2019 income tax returns and W-2s
- Birth dates
- Email
- Month & year parent(s) married/ separated/divorced/widowed (if applicable)

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP & GUEST SPEAKER
Fantastic job, Cohort 6, for taking EIHS on a virtual tour of the San Antonio Water Supply’s Water Recycling Center. Students explored “what happens after the flush” with Heather Ginsburg from the SAWS education department.
Students learned about the process of wastewater treatment and what they can do to be better water consumers. This virtual field trip was in support of their Aquatic Action PBL - where they will find a problem with clean water and create a filter and a social media campaign to address it.

CELEBRATE NATIVE PEOPLES, MONDAY OCTOBER 12TH
Indigenous Peoples’ Day, is a holiday celebrating the historical, political, cultural, artistic, musical, and linguistic contributions of First Nations / Native American people and communities. As of 2020, the holiday is observed by nine US states and the nation's capitol: Washington D.C. The holiday honors Indigenous communities from Alaska to Texas, to Hawaii for their contributions to American society and their resilience in the face of centuries of colonialism and genocide.
From the language and global-peace contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, who aided the Allied Forces in defeat of the Nazis; to the civic contributions of the Iroquois Confederacy, which is "often characterized as one of the world’s oldest participatory democracies, the confederacy has persisted into the 21st century," (Britannica) as well as being influential in the drafting of the US Constitution.
First Nations and Indigenous peoples' cultures and languages are still present and thriving. Native peoples' influences pervade US society; from sitting members of the US senate, to water protectors and leaders of the climate change movement. Learn about the hundreds of tribal nations that still exist today, and learn how their indigenous practices, resource management, and perspective can build a more sustainable and equitable tomorrow.

National Hispanic Heritage Month |

FINAL WEEK!
Hispanic Americans are the largest minority group in the US today, and the Spanish language is the second most spoken language in the world. We are excited to celebrate the many individuals and culture that has helped to make our country strong. As we continue this heritage month, students will learn more about the varying influences of Hispanic people, culture, art, music, language and community on the US and worldwide!

In biology this week students participated in a virtual enzyme lab from their homes! Students were testing the effect of pH and temperature on catalase enzyme activity (catalase is found in liver and potatoes). The students were awesome: following along at home, reporting observations and asking questions.

Ms. Martinez's art class has been linking the arts to social justice work. Students were asked: how can we as artists deliver authentic messages utilizing only the materials that are readily available to us?
Students in this activity were asked to use art as a language to express their views on hot topics that are important to them like: LGBTQ rights, immigration reform, climate change, BLM, mental health etc. Students were given freedom to choose their topic, or they could choose from over 50 challenges to choose from. The challenges call for experimentation and pushing the boundaries of normal art making through different choices of materials, actions, and creative problem solving.

ACE Mentors has been a partner with HISD for the last 7 years and are interested in expanding their program to more campuses with Architecture, Construction and Engineering.
They offer mentoring and scholarships opportunities for students and is a great place for students to get their foot in the door in that industry.

Department of State Youth Exchange Programs
|
STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY!
The U.S. Department of State provides over 1,000 merit-based scholarships each year for U.S. high school students to study abroad for a summer or an academic year in over 25 countries. These high school exchange programs prepare young Americans to succeed in the 21st century’s global economy by developing their foreign language skills, increasing their cross-cultural understanding, strengthening their leadership capacity, and fostering new academic insights and ambitions. The CBYX, NSLI-Y, and YES Abroad programs are accepting applications now, Youth Ambassadors will be open soon. Links for more information listed below.
These scholarships include international airfare, tuition, and program costs, as well as meals and living accommodations (often with a host family). Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 18. Seniors are welcome to apply and can travel after graduation, as long as they meet the age requirement.
The programs seek to encourage the involvement of people from traditionally underrepresented audiences. Opportunities are open to people regardless of their color, creed, or constitution. The programs are particularly interested in recruiting applicants who might otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in a study abroad experience.

The the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston is seeking tech savvy teens (age 16-19) who would like to enter into their program: Project Invent. The programs empowers students with the 21st-century skills to succeed individually and impact globally, through invention. Their goal is to create a generation of fearless, compassionate problem solvers.
High school students invent technologies that solve real-world problems. Project Invent guides students through the process of empathizing with users, brainstorming creative ideas, building meaningful solutions, and pitching for funding.
