Message from the New Chair
Hello Environmental Justice Caucus members,
As I step into this role as your new chair, I feel both honored and energized by the opportunity to continue building a future rooted in climate resilience and justice. Many of you may remember the passion of that first Earth Day in 1970—a moment that sparked a powerful movement for environmental change and justice. That same energy and vision is alive and well today, and I’m excited to welcome each of you to the next phase of that journey. Together, we will shape a movement that speaks to the needs of our communities, our state, and our planet.
This moment presents an incredible opportunity to strengthen our caucus with new ideas and new voices, especially those of younger generations who are feeling the impact of environmental issues more deeply than ever. As a young leader myself, I know our generation faces a world marked by unprecedented environmental challenges. I am committed to ensuring that this caucus remains a welcoming and inclusive space where passionate youth activists can join the ranks of public service and help carry forward our work. Just as I was welcomed into leadership by others, I am determined to keep that door wide open for new voices and perspectives. Fresh energy and innovative ideas don’t replace the legacy we’ve built—they enhance it, driving our mission forward with new momentum.
A bit about me: I am currently a student at UNM and have been involved in environmental justice since middle school. Today, I also serve as the First Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County. I am deeply connected to New Mexico as a lover of its landscapes, an avid long-distance runner, and someone who is dedicated to public service and helping people. My goal is to ensure this caucus represents all who are impacted by climate injustice, especially Indigenous and frontline communities whose resilience is central to our collective strength.
To advance our goals, I’m excited to introduce several new working groups to build on our caucus’s mission and expand our impact:
-
Social Media & Outreach Working Group: This committee will focus on enhancing our visibility through a strong social media presence and outreach initiatives tailored to young and diverse audiences.
-
Community Events Working Group: Aimed at bringing activism directly to our communities, this committee will plan events that allow us to engage face-to-face with New Mexicans and advocate for environmental justice in a public, accessible way.
-
Youth Engagement Working Group: In my first 100 days, I’ll work to establish this committee to connect our caucus with high schools, universities, and youth organizations, empowering young activists to get involved and lead.
-
Legislative Action Working Group: Building on the work our caucus has already done in past legislative sessions, this committee will provide a more structured approach to our legislative advocacy, helping us become the most trusted environmental voice in the state legislature. We’ll implement this committee gradually, ensuring that each new addition is adopted steadily to match our caucus’s capacity.
As we embark on this new phase, I’d love for each of you to bring your ideas, energy, and unique perspectives. If you’re as excited as I am about this work, let’s get in touch. I’m seeking members to help establish the Social Media & Outreach Working Group and the Community Events Working Group. If you’re interested in joining, please reach out at (505) 627-4375.
Thank you for your trust and for being part of this journey. Together, we’ll build a resilient future for New Mexico, as co-creators of a movement that values justice, action, and community.
Warm regards,
Chase Jacques-Maynes
