Warm congratulations to all EJP graduates! Above, EJP alumnus Otilio Rosas received his Bachelor of Arts in General Studies from Western Illinois University over the weekend, applying University of Illinois credits he received while enrolled in EJP courses at Danville.

Graduation and Convocation at DCC

This week 9 EJP students will received their Bachelor's degrees from Eastern Illinois University (EIU).

EJP does not offer a degree. We provide students with (primarily) upper-division courses that they can apply either to the EIU program, which is also at Danville and has very low residency requirements, or, upon release, to other institutions, as Mr. Rosas did (see above). We are immensely proud of all EJP students who complete their undergraduate degrees through one of these channels.

Because we do not offer a degree, there is no "end point" to participation with EJP at Danville. The students who will receive their degrees in tomorrow's ceremony at the prison are welcome to continue taking courses with EJP and participate in our other programs such as Language Partners or the Mindfulness Discussion Group. That's one of the reasons we now offer graduate-level University of Illinois courses at the prison--to provide ongoing learning opportunities for our students. Those classes are, of course, transferable upon their release.

Please join me in congratulating all EJP graduates!

Take Care,

Rebecca Ginsburg

EJP Director

Upcoming EJP Events

EJP Summer Lunches

Monday June 1

12 - 1pm
Hybrid

We're holding three summer lunches over the coming months. All EJP members and interested others are welcome to join us in person, at the EJP offices on campus (1001 S. Wright St), or via Zoom.

In-person lunches are always veggie-friendly and held from 12 - 1pm. Individuals who join via Zoom should expect discussion to start around 12:10, after in-person participants have had a chance to grab their lunches and settle into their seats.

Upcoming lunches are scheduled for:

Friday July 10

Thursday August 20

You can sign up for any or all via the RSVP link below.

If you have any questions or concerns, or need any accommodations to fully participate, please reach out to events@educationjustice.net.

Becoming a Center Updates

Tuesday June 9

11am - 12pm
Hybrid

We hold monthly updates on the progress we are making towards becoming a center on the University of Illinois campus. It's been a long journey and becoming a center (as opposed to a research project) has many implications.

Our next meeting will be June 9. Future updates will be held on:

Tuesday July 14, 3 - 4

Thursday August 27, 4 -5

Please indicate your questions and concerns on the RSVP form, below, so we can be sure to address them at the meeting!

If you have any questions or concerns, or need any accommodations to fully participate, please reach out to events@educationjustice.net.

EJP Member Announcements

Are you an EJP member looking for weekly announcements? Over the coming months, member announcements will be arriving in your Bamboo instead of being linked to this newsletter.

Paid Positions with EJP

Some EJP positions can be held virtually, some are hybrid, and some (those based at Danville Prison) require that an individual be able to regularly visit the prison. Our preference is always to hire local individuals and we especially seek candidates who have personal experience of incarceration. Click on the links below to see complete job descriptions.
