A Message From the Coordinator of Bilingual and EL Services
Greetings to all,
Spring has truly sprung in District 115. March has shown us that it can be a lion and a lamb, but we continue to press onward toward a strong conclusion to our year.
This month, our focus starts to shift to planning for next year. We have completed our ACCESS testing this year and am so proud to say that our test completion rate was just under 99% this year. This is a credit to the hard work that our EL Specialists put in to make sure that we are able to see and celebrate the growth that our multilingual learners are making toward English proficiency. We hope to receive preliminary students scores in the month of May.
We are also beginning our hiring process for the upcoming school year. If you are interested in working for Yorkville 115, we welcome our community members to help us serve our students of all language and cultural backgrounds. Please review our current job postings HERE and apply for any that meet your interests and qualifications. If you would like to see how you contribute to our district in other capacities, please contact me and I will be happy to speak with you about the opportunities that we have available and find one that suits your abilities, desires, and talents.
Our Dual Language Information Night presentation recording in English is available in the Upcoming Events section. I will be creating an additional, abbreviated recording in English and Spanish to post to our website as well for any parent interested in enrolling their incoming Kindergarten student in our Dual Language program. If you or anyone you know have any questions, please reach out to me at the email provided. If you already have children in our Dual Language program, please be reminded that siblings are automatically accepted into the program. However, we do ask that parents with children currently in Dual Language still submit a completed application so that we can make sure everyone is included in our lists as we make our preparations for the lottery.
Finally, we are working diligently to also plan some amazing parent engagement events for our multilingual families and students. Information will be forthcoming soon about a workshop at the end of April, as well as BPAC family events that we are planning. Our April and May BPAC meetings will include some wonderful speakers from the Yorkville Public Library and the Illinois Resource Center, so you will not want to miss those.
I wish everyone a great weekend and a safe and happy spring holiday season.

The Holy Month of Ramadan
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection, and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. It is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset. They are also supposed to avoid impure thoughts and bad behavior. Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends, and the end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. Ramadan always falls on the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar. Ramadan 2022 begins at sunset on Saturday, April 2, and ends on the evening of Monday, May 2. Tinariwen is a collective of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. Considered a pioneer of desert blues, the group's guitar-driven style combines traditional Tuareg and African music with Western rock music. They have released 8 albums since their formation and have toured internationally, including receiving a Grammy Nomination in 2020 for Best Global Music Album. The group's founding members created an unnamed musical group in 1979 while exiled in Tamanrasset, Algeria. Tinariwen formed a musical collective while in military training in Libya, aiming to write songs about issues facing the Tuareg people. They returned to Mali in 1989, with some members joining as fighters in a Tuareg rebellion before dedicating themselves to music fulltime after a peace accord was reached in 1991. Their popularity rose internationally with the release of the critically acclaimed album "Aman Iman" in 2007. Following the start of the Mali War in 2012, the group fled their home country and have since lived and recorded in exile due to threats again them from militant groups.

As we watch the conflict unfolding in Ukraine with shock and sadness, parents may wonder the best way to communicate with their children about world events. Raising children through uncertain times like today is exhausting, made all the more difficult because most parents in the United States may not have parallel experiences from their own childhoods to draw from. The war in Ukraine, arriving on the heels of all the instability and sadness of the pandemic, is another difficult moment for parents wondering how and how much to talk about the news with their children. In this article from US News & World Report, counselors, educators, and parents give their insight on how to best describe and explain the conflict in Ukraine and how to help them make sense of it.

The State of Learning Disabilities:
Understanding the 1 in 5
|
The National Center for Learning Disabilities, as the leading authority on learning disabilities in children for over four decades, released their most recent report "The State of Learning Disabilities: Understanding the 1 in 5". This report uses data for the 2015–2016 school year and other field-leading research to shine a light on the current challenges and opportunities facing the 1 in 5 children who have learning and attention issues such as dyslexia and ADHD. This report reveals that children with learning and attention issues are as smart as their peers and can achieve at high levels but too often are misunderstood as lazy or unintelligent. Without the right academic or emotional support, they are much more likely than their peers to repeat a grade, get suspended and drop out. Individuals with learning and attention issues also struggle in the workplace and have high rates of involvement with the criminal justice system. But this downward spiral can be prevented. As parents and advocates for your children, it is important to understand the signs and work as partners with your school and district to ensure that your child is receiving the supports he or she needs to be successful. Here at Yorkville 115, we affirm our commitment to providing every child with the resources, support, and care they need to achieve and thrive.
