School News

Happy 2024! We are excited to be back together and hope everyone enjoyed their Winter break! In Kindergarten, our ESOL students have had a cool start to the New Year by learning about winter, winter animals, clothing, and how it is different from the other seasons. We also learned about the names of Body Parts and Healthy choices & routines through the Little Sponges Gym Adventure. We celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. and his incredible efforts to help people from all races live together in peace and harmony. We will be administering the state-mandated ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners) from February 5 through February 27. This test monitors the progress of ESOL students in the following 4 domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We will spend time during ESOL class fine-tuning these areas to prepare for this important test. Be sure your child is here at school each day, is well-rested, and has a nutritious breakfast during this important time.

And we want to wish a Happy Lunar New Year to you and your family! Lunar New Year is a special Asian tradition welcoming in a new year and honoring ancestors. May 2024 bring you prosperity, hope, and tranquility!

Brrrr! It has been cold outside this month, but ESOL classes have been heating up the learning atmosphere at Buford Academy! We have continued to provide language rich learning opportunities for our students through Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing activities and assignments. We celebrated the 100th day of school in rock and roll style and embarked upon adventures into learning about the traditions and customs surrounding Lunar New Year. As we enter into the ACCESS testing season which will take place in the month of February for our language learners, we are providing our students with as much practice as possible to make them be the best version of themselves when they encounter the test. We will be hosting an EL Parent Night for those who would like to learn more information about what is coming up. This will take place at Buford Academy on January 30th at 5:30. Please mark your calendars to attend if possible. We look forward to seeing you there and answering any questions that you may have. It is always our pleasure to be able to serve the needs of our multilingual learners and their families!

ESOL students at Buford Senior Academy started the semester preparing, practicing, and reviewing tips for the ACCESS Test. This test is given to ESOL students to test their English proficiency in the domains of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The ACCESS Test began on January 22nd at BSA. Students have been working diligently to show off their language skills! We are so proud of them for taking their time and doing their best!

Take a look at how the Newcomers are showing off their English reading skills by reading to a partner! Reading aloud to a peer is great practice for language learners.

At Buford Middle School, we are preparing for the ACCESS test beginning February 20th. We are analyzing extended constructed responses (ECR) as well as learning the format for writing the best-ever ECR. The students use a wonderful graphic organizer which we've named Felicia. Felicia helps the students visualize and map out a wonderful plan to organize the ideas for their ECR. Please enjoy our Felicia! Additionally, we are masters at the RACEACES strategy. This strategy helps us write short constructed responses. Please enjoy our graphic organizers!

The ESOL 9th Grade Literature class enjoyed reading  When Stars Are Scattered, a true story written by Omar Mohamed.  It is a graphic novel that tells the story of two Somali refugee brothers, who navigate the harsh realities of life in a refugee camp while holding onto hope and dreams for a brighter future.
