School News

Buford Elementary students are doing an amazing job with their English language development! This month we learned about items we need and items we want and why we cannot always have things we want.

We encourage students to use as much detail as they can when speaking. You can help at home with this too! In your home language or English, ask your child to describe in detail the events of several pictures. What do they see? What colors? Who is in the picture? What is happening? We are enjoying learning about holiday customs and traditions as we continue to work on our vocabulary skills during this month.

One last final note, please encourage your child to use the Wolf Wall on our BES website at home during the holiday break. The Wolf Wall has many great learning & review tools for your child - beswolves.com.

We hope you & your family have a wonderful Holiday Season!

We have had a busy start as we enter the first two weeks of the month of December at BA! We are completing our benchmark writing assessments as the end of Semester One is quickly approaching. The students have composed writings on a variety of topics and worked diligently to complete final drafts for publishing and grading. We continue to participate in daily practice sessions of the four areas that will be upcoming on the annual ACCESS test: Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening.

Students have also had the opportunity to visit the BA Santa Shop and purchase gifts for their friends and family. One set of students even chose to spend their money on a surprise gift for an ESOL classmate! We are very proud of the community that we share in our language-learning classes every day.

We are also excited to announce that ESOL students who have parental permission will be allowed to take home their Chromebooks for the Christmas break to continue their learning experience while away. Please be aware that each student is responsible for the proper care and safe return of their device. You also must have internet access in your home to take advantage of this experience.

As we celebrate this time of year with the ones we love and cherish, please know that your team of ESOL teachers at BA considers YOUR CHILD and YOUR FAMILY to be among our greatest gifts! Have a safe and blessed holiday and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of you.

As the first semester comes to a close, we just want to let you know how proud we are of all of our students! The growth and progress they have made has been tremendous. Their effort and desire to learn is priceless. We will miss them all so much during the long Winter Break. Please encourage your children to continue reading over the break. They can access books on MyON through their ELA Canvas page, and they can work on their RAZ Kids or Imagine Learning programs. They can also listen to books on Storyline OnlineWe hope you all enjoy this time making memories with your loved ones.

When the students return, we will be preparing for the ACCESS Test. This test is given to EL students to assess their English language proficiency in the domains of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. We will begin this exam on January 22nd. Your children can practice HERE

We look forward to seeing our wonderful students back on Monday, January 8th!

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY at BMS! BUSY LEARNING! We are busy analyzing reading skills, grammar skills, and writing skills. Ask your student about our extended constructed response organizer. It teaches students how to write a well-developed 5 paragraph essay. Our wonderful principal and one of our board members stopped by to visit one-day last month, and they were impressed with the students' knowledge of writing. I am impressed every day with their academic growth. I will miss them during the break. Please make sure they are reading during the time that we are off from school. Stay safe and have a lot of fun with your loved ones!

American Literature classes ended the semester learning about Transcendentalism. They completed a final project incorporating the themes of the literary movement (free-thinking, self-reliance, individualism, and facing fears) into their lives.
