School News

At BESOur ELL student’s English Proficiency levels have been assessed and we welcome 67 kindergarten ESOL students for the 2022-2023 school year. Be on the lookout for more information coming soon about Little Sponges, an online program that our ESOL students will be heavily using this year for their English language development. Students are encouraged to use the online Little Sponges program at home and at school!

BES would like to wish everyone “Happy Chuseok”! Chuseok is a Korean Holiday that celebrates and shows gratitude towards our ancestors. It’s a 3-day celebration (Sept. 9-11) where people spend time with family, enjoy Korean games, have delicious food, practice family customs, and display vibrant decorations.

BES also will be learning and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Sept 14-Oct. 15. Our teachers have many exciting activities planned to honor and celebrate various Hispanic cultures and traditions.

All of the ESOL teachers at Buford Elementary can be reached by email. Mrs. Delgado is our Spanish translator for our team and you can email her directly.

Buford Academy has had a great start as we are working into our second month of the ESOL program at BA. Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing practice is underway each day as your child attends class. In the coming weeks, BA ESOL students will be participating in classroom and school wide events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. We are sending home the Cultural Doll Project for you to make with your child and send in for our display. If you have any information you’d like for us to share in class about your family’s history or heritage during this time, please let us know!

Please continue to use the Talking Points app (ESOL teacher texts) on your device or cell phone to communicate any needs with your child’s ESOL teacher.

We also want to encourage you to use the Reading Eggs learning website at home when possible. Your child’s login information is located in their agenda and they should be familiar with how to access the program from the Wolf Wall.

In the coming weeks, we will also introduce your child to the ESOL module located on their Canvas page. This will contain the weekly slideshows that we teach in class and help them with skill review as well as a great place to find learning resources!

We love serving your child's language learning needs!

At Buford Senior Academy, our 4th and 5th graders completed several language activities each day with their weekly passage, "A Camping Trip", students were able to bring part of the passage to life. They heated their own marshmallows and made s'mores. Students described the s'mores just like the characters in the passage, "warm, gooey, and delicious!"

The ESOL students at Buford Middle School have had a great start to the school year! They are working diligently on research projects, presentations, and analyzing literature. All students participate in presenting their findings whether they are new to America or experienced in their new culture. Our first Saturday School will be on September 24th. We are looking forward to an exciting school year!

Last week, the students at BHS had their first Benchmark for this semester. Parents, please make sure you check Power School to see how your student is progressing. A grade of 70 is needed in order for your student to pass the class and to earn credit. If your student has low grades or missing assignments, there are several opportunities for them to receive academic help. One opportunity is for them to stay on Wednesday after school from 3:10 to 4:10. A bus will take them home if they live in the Buford City Limits.

We are looking forward to celebrating Buford Homecoming the week of October 10-14. Homecoming is a long-standing American tradition where colleges and high schools would welcome alumni back to campus and the community. The earliest homecoming celebrations centered around alumni football games. There will be a community Homecoming Parade on Friday at 3:00. The football game will begin at 7:30. The Homecoming Dance will be on Saturday, September 21st.

Hope to see you there!

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the high school or your student!
