School News

Kindergarten students have been busy during the months of September/October! We began our Little Sponges program by visiting Alphabet Island, the Playground Adventure, and now the Farm Adventure. We watched, listened, and sang along with each learning adventure. We worked on developing oral communication skills through dialogue with our teachers, peers, and puppets. We also celebrated and learned more about Chuseok and Hispanic Heritage! Each morning on the announcements we heard information about many important Hispanic people, their contributions, Hispanic food, music, and more! There are so many rich customs and traditions in the cultures represented in our school that we appreciate and love learning about! Students took home their “Where I’m From” at-home project to work on with their family. These projects will return to school in time for International Student’s Day on November 17. On this special day, we’ll share our family’s culture by presenting the "Where I’m From” projects and we will display these projects at school. Thank you parents for all of your help and support with their Culture projects!

Happy Fall to our ESOL families and friends! We have enjoyed our studies of Hispanic Heritage Month the last few weeks and are wrapping our personal narrative writings in First and Second Grade. We will now be heading into informational writing topics to supply us with exciting nonfiction content! We hope that you found your conference sessions beneficial with your child's homeroom teacher this month. It is important to stay connected as we partner together to give each student their best learning experience. Please remember that you can provide additional reading related content support at home through the use of our Reading Eggs and Imagine Learning online programs. Your child has been provided with the login access information to continue their learning at home on a chosen device. Please let your child's ESOL teacher know if you have any questions about either program and we will be more than happy to assist you! Also, remember to take time to have conversations with your child at home! Speaking is such a vital part of your child's overall growth and development as a learner. If you need to reach out to your ESOL teacher at any time, feel free to use Talking Points as a means to communicate. Don't forget about our Trunk or Treat event held at Buford Academy on October 27th. We look forward to another exciting month to partner with you to meet your child's language learning needs!

Congratulations to Buford City Schools System TEACHER of the YEAR, Mrs. Lauren Tsouchlos!!!!!!!!!  She will move on to represent our school district for Georgia Teacher of the Year.  She is an outstanding educator who inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn. She has respect and admiration for students, parents, and colleagues, and plays a valuable role in the school and community.

This month, BSA's students read and performed a play they wrote as a class called How Many Days to America: The Sequel. It's about a family who migrates to America and what they've done with their lives over the span of 20 years!

BSA's 5th graders also participated in an Ellis Island simulation.  This simulation helped the kids develop an understanding of what it was like to be an immigrant passing through Ellis Island in the early 1900s. They dressed up and traveled through the different stations of Ellis Island.  Students were able to experience what it would have been like for an immigrant coming through Ellis Island.  Thank you to our staff and parent volunteers for bringing this Social Studies unit to life!

Lastly, Parent-Teacher conferences went great! We enjoyed speaking with you all in person, over the phone, and even in your homes. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Students are learning and having so much fun at Buford Middle School. Sixth-grade students just finished up the novel study of Esperanza Rising. They ended Hispanic Heritage Month with a bang by creating yarn dolls, just like Esperanza's (protagonist) mom taught her how to make... Additionally, the students enjoyed every second of The Color Run 2023. What a great day for such a wonderful cause! They are excited for next year!... Thank you parents for the great conferences and your continued support.

Benchmark 2 will be given from October 30th through November 3rd at BHS. Your student will have a Benchmark in every class. Benchmark 2 counts 200 points! Please check your student's grades on PowerSchool to make sure they are passing. They need at least a 70 to pass the class and earn credit.

Encourage your student to stay after school every Wednesday (Upgrade). It is a great opportunity for them to get help. The hours are from 3:00 to 4:00 and a bus will take them home. There are three academic Teachers and three academic peer tutors.

On Wednesday, October 18th our EL 11th grade and 12th grade students visited Gwinnett Technical College. Students learned about the 140 programs available, careers in demand, and the admissions process. Students learned that there is an opportunity for all to continue their education! Students were able to tour the college, and facilities and visit classrooms. Students had the opportunity to meet the Department Heads of the Education, Sonography, and Business programs as well as the President of Student Life.

Gwinnett Technical College is a great option for our students to get certified and work in their careers of choice within 2 years or less. It is also a great place for students to earn their Associate degree and transfer to a 4-year college. Gwinnett Technical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the associate and their credits are accepted by many colleges and universities.
