School News

Our ELL student’s English Proficiency levels have been assessed and we welcome 60 kindergarten ESOL students for the 2023-2024 school year. We’ve enjoyed getting to know each other and creating a warm classroom environment together. Soon, we’ll be sending home a little ‘project’ for you to work on with your student to represent your culture. Also, be on the lookout for more information coming soon about Little Sponges, an online program that our ESOL students will be using this year for their English language development. Students are encouraged to use the online Little Sponges program at home and at school!

BES would like to wish everyone “Happy Chuseok”! Chuseok is a Korean Holiday that celebrates and shows gratitude towards our ancestors. It’s a 3-day celebration (Sept. 28-30) where people spend time with family, enjoy Korean games, have delicious food, practice family customs, and display vibrant decorations.

BES will be learning about and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Sept 15-Oct. 15. Our school and classrooms have many exciting activities planned to honor and celebrate various Hispanic cultures and traditions.

We have had a very busy and fun month of September at Buford Academy! We celebrated Homecoming week and are kicking off our studies linked to Hispanic Heritage Month. We look forward to learning about the important contributions made by many of these individuals. During our ESOL learning segments, we have been working on communicating our thoughts, ideas, and experiences through writing. Our topics are mostly related to personal experiences in the form of personal narratives. We are also practicing having conversations with our peers to enhance our language-related learning.

Please remember the importance of attending your child's Fall conference appointment. This is a valuable experience and will prove very helpful to gain insight into your child's progress. You can always contact your child's ESOL teacher through Talking Points if you have any needs or concerns that arise. We are here for YOU!

Buford Senior Academy kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a very special guest, our SRO, Officer Carrasco! Officer Carrasco is from Guadalajara, Mexico. He shared his experiences, obstacles, and triumphs as an English Language Learner going through school. He explained to the class that hard work, perseverance, and positive attitudes will help them achieve their goals. Students were able to ask "Officer C" several questions. They were most interested in his time serving in the military and as a police officer.

After reading and working with passages about baking, students had the opportunity to bake cookies in the oven AND in a solar oven!

The kids had a ROAR-some time shopping at our first Book Fair of the year! They enjoyed looking for the perfect book.

The students at BMS have been actively learning English with many fun, interactive activities. The students really enjoy coming to school everyday and learning. We had a very successful Saturday School on September 23rd. So, they even enjoy coming to school on the weekend! Parents, thank you for being so supportive of your students' education.

We will be having parent conferences in October. Please look for a letter of invitation soon. The after-school program called Overtime will also be starting soon. Please keep alert for an invitation for that program as well. Keep encouraging your students to read at home. They should be reading at least 20 minutes at home every day.

Again, thank you for giving us the opportunity to teach your student!

Please feel free to email me or call me with any questions or concerns.

BHS had an eventful and fun Homecoming Week! A lot of our students participated in the "dress up days" and attended the Homecoming Dance.

Benchmark 2 is October 30th through November 3rd. They are worth 200 points. Please check your student's grades. They must have a 70 to earn credit for the class. High School graduation is based on credits. UpGrade is available every Wednesday afternoon until 4:00 with bus transportation. There are academic teachers there to help them.
