El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, April 11, 2025 | Vol. 10, No. 11

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As you read these brief remarks, the Hostos family is preparing for spring break, a time to catch our breaths and to finish all work, if any is pending, as we enjoy the full realization of spring.

These past weeks, a number of activities have focused our attention on embracing a diverse and hopeful world. We centered respect and understanding of one another, of how much we have in common and of understanding our differences. I take this opportunity, once again, to affirm our commitment to the integrity of shared governance and our belief that in an academic setting there is room for open and respectful differences of opinions, even when there are strong disagreements. That is the essence of a democratic education.

As we enjoy a week of restoration, I wish you all happy holidays with family and significant others.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEM

“Gift”

By Czeslaw Milosz

A day so happy.

Fog lifted early, I worked in the garden.

Hummingbirds were stopping over honeysuckle flowers.

There was no thing on earth I wanted to possess.

I knew no one worth my envying him.

Whatever evil I had suffered, I forgot.

To think that once I was the same man did not embarrass me.

In my body I felt no pain.

When straightening up, I saw the blue sea and sails.

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT (OIERA)

Fighting Words? Saying Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Out Loud

A session at the recent (April 3 - 5) AAC&U CLASS (Conference on Learning and Student Success) in San Juan, PR addressed strategies to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the current political context and in light of recent federal emergency actions, memos, and policies. Strikingly, the premise of the presentation was that institutions of higher education will not be using the terms “diversity, equity and inclusion” in their respective communication and will instead talk about the value of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in “plain language” and “common sense” ways that anyone, regardless of their political affiliation can understand. This was a stark reminder that, while all of higher education is under attack, CUNY remains — at least for now — a relatively safe space in which we continue to speak directly about diversity, equity and inclusion without resorting to euphemisms; CUNY remains an environment in which these terms are not red flags in and of themselves.

The second half of the session was an interactive invitation for participants to provide examples of how they talk about equity, inclusion and diversity in “plain language” at their respective institutions. In addition to some examples of talking about inclusion without using the word and instead leaning into words like “sense of belonging,” “welcoming,” “seen and heard,” and “valued,” participants mentioned recent practices at their home institutions. Rather than using the word diversity, for example, people are talking about students who “come from varied backgrounds,” or “bring different perspectives to the table.” While word play is strategy, the proposed strategy seems to be both a capitulation (avoiding words that the current federal administration has erased from websites and other federal documents, and has “encouraged” federal workers to avoid entirely) and misplaced hope that the unambiguous, hateful attempt at dismantling higher education is due — at least in part — to a misunderstanding about what it means to be inclusive, to celebrate and support diversity and to work towards equity.

To this point, an administrator from the University of Pennsylvania mentioned that their “DEI page” had been “scrubbed” and all that remained in its place was a banal statement about belonging and notice that Penn was complying with federal policies. At another institution, rather than scrubbing their website, mentions of diversity, equity and inclusion are now only available behind a “paywall” to faculty, staff, and students. At Hostos (I did not say aloud — the session was coming to a close), we are not scrubbing our website, our syllabi, or our institutional effectiveness practices. Like CUNY, we continue to use the words the federal administration has tried to ban. If by insisting on using vocabulary that describes our institutional commitments we are also committing to resistance, let’s use these meaning-rich, fighting words with joy, hope and optimism.

Diversity Month

Dear Hostos Community,

As we champion the vibrant spirit of inclusivity and diversity that defines our campus, I am delighted to recognize the arrival of Diversity Month this April. Diversity Month takes place in April every year and was initiated in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity of the world around us. It is a time to recognize and understand our differences, be they gender, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, and other aspects while honoring the common essence of humanity. By appreciating our similarities and differences, the month aims to get people to seek a deeper understanding of others, regardless of who they are, what they are, or how they live.

This is a time for us to come together as a community and celebrate the medley of cultures, perspectives, and identities that make our campus truly remarkable. At Hostos, we believe that diversity is a core value that enriches our environment. By embracing diversity, we foster empathy and creativity, which are essential for success in today’s global society. I encourage each of you to participate in the many events planned these last few weeks of the semester that promote inclusivity and raise awareness of the diverse communities surrounding us. Let us take these opportunities to celebrate our differences, build bridges across cultures and reaffirm our commitment to creating a campus where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered.

Best,

Philip

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“A Prayer in Spring”

By Robert Frost

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today;

And give us not to think so far away

As the uncertain harvest; keep us here

All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,

Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;

And make us happy in the happy bees,

The swarm dilating 'round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird

That suddenly above the bees is heard,

The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,

And off a blossom in midair stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,

To which it is reserved for God above

To sanctify to what far ends He will,

But which it only needs that we fulfill.

Cafeteria Food Services Vendor Search Update

We are pleased to share that the Cafeteria Food Services Vendor search process is drawing to a close. A finalist had been identified in Fall 2024 from the RFP process and the contract negotiations became the last step before the vendor could officially start operations at the three colleges. While legal counsel from the vendor and CUNY have been working on the contract, Hostos has been preparing the cafeteria kitchen spaces in anticipation of the new food services vendor. The space has been thoroughly cleaned, equipment has been repaired and/or inspected, and new equipment has been brought in. Once the contract is finalized, which we anticipate to be within this month, we will happily announce the new food services vendor.

Re-Inventory Has Begun

The re-inventory process began Monday, April 7, 2025.

They are accompanied by the campus locksmith so they can access offices and classrooms to complete the re-inventory.

Below is the schedule for the re-inventory process:

  • Week of April 7: D Building (Savoy Manor)

  • Week of April 7 and 14: A Building (475 Grand Concourse)

  • Week of April 14 and 28: C Building (500 Grand Concourse)

  • Week of May 5: Prow Building, Gateway Building (Incubator space)

CEWD Student Spotlight

Daniela enrolled in CEWD’s Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certificate Program hoping to pursue a career in healthcare. The PCT program consists of the following occupational trainings: Certified Nursing Assistant, Electrocardiogram (EKG), Phlebotomy, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).  After successfully completing the course and passing the certification exam, she wanted to find employment.  To become a PCT, she needed work experience as a CNA first.

Daniela reached out to CEWD’s Career Services staff for help obtaining employment. She attended CEWD’s career development workshops and participated in one-on-one coaching sessions with our Career Services and Employment Coordinator.  With support, she also updated her resume and interviewing skills. In March 2025, Daniela accepted a full-time job as a CNA at BronxCare Special Care Center. This experience will help her reach her ultimate goal — to become a PCT.

Daniela is grateful to CEWD for the support she received. “Thank you so much for your help,” she said. “Hostos Continuing Education definitely changed my life, and I am very grateful to your entire team, especially to you [Juan Vazquez, Career Services and Employment Coordinator] for training me so that I could get the job.”
