MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | |

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

“I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud”
By William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Hostos Campus Climate Initiative Events
The Hostos Campus Climate Initiative is hosting two events on April 16 in support of the CUNY Anti-Hate Initiative, a multi-year effort that seeks to promote greater cultural awareness, understanding, and support for specific communities that have experienced discrimination. The first event, Bullying and Hate in the Digital Age, will feature a special keynote presentation from Dr. Jeffrey Lane, Associate Professor of Communication at Rutgers University, who will address the impact of online bullying, drawing from his research on communication and technology in relation to urban settings and youth development. This will be a timely and relevant discussion for understanding the negative effects of online bullying that will provide opportunities for attendees to share their experiences and offer helpful strategies to promote respectful communication across social media platforms.
In the afternoon, the Second Annual Multi-Faith Symposium and Luncheon will bring the Hostos community together to share and learn about different forms of faith and spiritual expression in our community. The event will present faith leaders from the community that will discuss with us how we can all come together to build a stronger community that supports and honors diverse forms of faith and spiritual expression. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join in this important dialogue and opportunity for learning and growing together.
Continuing in this spirit of promoting a respectful and inclusive campus community, Hostos student Khadidia Traore and fellow Muslim Student Club members will be holding the first Hostos Eid Festival on April 19, a special event rooted in the Muslim tradition of charity and mutual support that is celebrated at the conclusion of the fasting month of Ramadan. All are welcome to join in learning more about this important tradition for our Muslim community and celebrating the joy of giving to help those in need. What You Need to Know about Artificial Intelligence Scams
The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) urges all New Yorkers to be aware of the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) scams and released new tips about how to stay safe and vigilant. As advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning continue to impact many aspects of our lives, consumers should keep up to date with the newest types of scams that may target them and their loved ones. Using AI voice-cloning technology to ask for money or personal information, scammers may try to impersonate your family and friends. Scammers may also use deepfake technology to alter pictures or videos to impersonate public figures or loved ones.
Signs It's a Voice-Cloning Scam:
- You are contacted out of the blue.
- You are pressured to act immediately, with no time to think.
- The caller is urgently requesting money, usually through a wire transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency. These payment methods make it nearly impossible to get a refund once you've been scammed.
- The caller is requesting personal or private information from you.
- You are told to keep the caller's request a secret.
Signs It's a Deepfake Scam:
- Look for signs of an altered video, including jerky or unrealistic movements, shifts in lighting or skin tone, strange or no blinking, and shadows around the eyes. Listen for inconsistencies.
- Is the speaker doing something totally out of character, like asking for your money or personal information? Deepfake videos often feature strange word choices, stilted language, and choppy sentences. The caller requests money, usually urgently and through a hard-to-trace method like a wire transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency.
How to Respond:
- Ask questions. Caller ID can be faked. Although a scammer may sound like a loved one, they won't be able to answer personal questions to which only your real loved one would know the answer. You can ask them to confirm details that aren't publicly available.
- Be skeptical. Hang up and call the person back, but don't simply redial the number that called you – call their trusted number. If you can't reach that loved one directly, try to reach out through another family member or friend.
- Stop and think. Urgency is a scammer's most powerful tool for getting you to do what they want. You can take control of the situation by pausing for a moment to consider the situation rationally.
You can report scams online to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC will use your report to investigate and bring cases against other frauds, scams, and bad business practices.
Anyone who needs financial advice, including those who may have fallen for a scam, should visit the NYC Financial Empowerment Center for free, one-on-one professional financial counseling. NYC Financial Empowerment Centers can help New Yorkers manage their money, establish, or improve their credit, set up a spending plan, open a safe and affordable bank account, contact their lenders about debt, including student loans, develop a strategy to reduce debt or lower payments, access emergency government resources, and more. Since 2008, NYC Financial Empowerment Centers have served more than 73,000 clients, helping to reduce their debt by more than $100 million and helping them save more than $11 million. New Yorkers can book a free and confidential appointment with a professional financial counselor by visiting nyc.gov/TalkMoney or calling 311 and saying "Financial Counseling." Services are available in person or by phone and in multiple languages.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Dear Hostos Community,
In the month of April, we acknowledge the importance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (“SAAM”). This month serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to promote safety, respect, and support for survivors within our community. Sexual assault remains a pervasive issue affecting individuals of all genders, backgrounds, and identities. It is incumbent upon each of us to stand in solidarity against such violence and work toward creating a culture of consent, respect, and accountability. On April 15, in the Atrium, we will be hosting Enough is Enough Coordinator Jamie Pytlik, from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office Crime Victims Assistance Bureau, who will be disseminating critically important information related to New York State Education Law Articles 129-A & B, consent, and healthy relationships, as well as providing supplies for art-based activities related to sexual assault awareness month. We encourage members of our campus community to stop by the Atrium on April 15, between the hours of 12 P.M. to 4 P.M., to visit the Bronx D.A.’s table and speak with Jamie Pytlik.
In recognition of this issue, Hostos Community College celebrates Denim Day events, specifically April 24, 2024, as Denim Day. Wear your favorite denim on April 24, 2024, in honor and support of victims of sexual assault and other forms of gender-based violence. Make sure to tag any pictures on social media using the hashtag #CUNYDenimDay. If anyone has old denim they no longer wear, consider cutting it into pieces and attaching safety pins to it. This can be a denim ribbon for people who cannot wear denim on Denim Day. Together, we can make a difference and contribute to building a future free from sexual violence. Thank you for your commitment to creating a campus culture that values respect, equity, and safety for all.
Warm regards,
Phil Oliveri

Student Activities
Fee Referendum
In the Fall of 2023, discussions began among members of the Student Government Association (S.G.A.) regarding the adjustment of the current student activity fee, aiming to align it with that of similar institutions. The last increase in the student activity fee took place in the year 2004, and since then, the cost of holding events and providing services to students has increased significantly.
Several meetings were convened to deliberate on the matter, leading the team to propose an increase of $23.00 for full-time students and $12.75 for part-time students. The proposed increase would support units such as the Children’s Center, the Hostos Student Leadership Academy, the Athletics Department, and Health and Wellness. In addition, it would provide funds to cover the cost of student recognition ceremonies such as the Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Radiology Pinning Ceremonies and other events.
The first step towards changing the fees is now complete. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the S.G.A., Athletics, Transfer Services, Student Activities, and other entities, over 550 signatures were collected to include the referendum question to the Student Government Elections ballot. The second step will take place next month when the question is presented for a vote by the student body.
This second step requires that at least ten percent of registered students participate in the electoral process and that the majority of them vote in favor of the increase. Once that step is complete, comes the third and most crucial step, wherein our student leaders present the proposed increase to the CUNY Board of Trustees. The Board's review and approval are essential for implementing the adjustment starting in Fall 2024.
We remain hopeful that the proposed increase will gain approval, enabling us to enhance services and allocate additional funding to benefit our student body.

Gratitude to Blood Donors
A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated blood at the Blood Drive held on March 21. There is a blood emergency nationwide, and blood donors are needed now more than ever. The New York Blood Center (NYBC) partnered with Hostos in this life-saving mission, and the Hostos community stepped up that day. Hostos donors provided 32 vital and much-needed pints of blood in just a few hours. One pint of blood can save up to three lives and these donations help save the lives of hospital patients in our area. Blood donors can give blood every 56 days and up to 6 times a year, according to the NY Blood Center. For more information about the donation process, you can visit the NYBC website.
South Bronx Unite Air Quality Monitoring Project
South Bronx Unite (SBU), a local community organization, is launching an air monitoring program for the South Bronx in partnership with Columbia University. The South Bronx has some of the worst traffic conditions in the country due to the bridges, interstate highways, railway tracks, and industrial operations surrounding the vicinity. These environmental conditions are strong contributors to the negative health outcomes of the residents of the South Bronx, including high rates of asthma.
The organization is installing 25 air monitors around the borough. SBU is working with Hostos to attach four monitors to different sites around the campus, one of which will be on the Savoy building at a height of around 10 feet. The analysis of the data collected will be made accessible to the College as well as to the public. South Bronx Unite hopes to use the data collected to help address health disparities and to advocate for initiatives that can help to improve the air and noise quality of the neighborhood.
