El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, April 21, 2023 | Vol. 6, No. 12

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As you return, I hope that your last few weeks of classes are successful and enjoyable, as we look forward to commencement. I share disappointing news regarding the national Aspen prize for which we have been competing as a top ten finalist. Unfortunately, we did not win the top prize. This does not take away from the brilliance of this moment or the recognition of our efforts.

Let us celebrate as we move forward with the Hostos Research Center and the possibilities that it will bring to our students and colleagues. I’m delighted to share an excerpt of my remarks from our ribbon-cutting ceremony that took place on March 30, 2023.

HOSTOS RESEARCH CENTER RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY REMARKS

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

March 30, 2023

Chancellor Matos Rodríguez, Council member Eric Dinowitz, Deputy Bronx Borough President, Janet Peguero, distinguished guests and representatives of the Office of Senator José M. Serrano, Office of Council member Rafael Salamanca, Jr. and Office of Council member Kevin Riley, wonderful students, represented brilliantly by José Armando Keppis, esteemed colleagues, so honorably represented by our speakers this afternoon, Dr. Sofía Oviedo, Prof. Thomas Beachdel and Professor Yoel Rodríguez, members of the President’s Cabinet and President’s Office, and everyone, all hands on deck, supporting this beautiful project, and cherished friends: Welcome. Bienvenido/as. This is an afternoon of great celebration.

We gather today to celebrate the opening of the Hostos Research Center. To remain vital in the present, one must look to the future — and I anticipate the diversity of ideas and approaches arising from the Center. Here, faculty members from across the disciplines will create and explore new and ever more effective ways of teaching. It is yet another way we work to provide the optimum academic experience for our beloved students.

In his “Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community,” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. observes that “Universities adapting to the new needs of the day must learn how to develop the abilities of people who have had trouble with school in their youth and have not earned their credentials. They should be trained on the job, get university credit for their experience, learn in relevant courses and develop a liberal-arts knowledge that is built around their concerns. We need what S.M. Miller has called ‘second chance universities.’ A democratic educational system requires multiple doors.”

We have spent this week meeting in town halls to discuss our draft of the next Strategic Plan 2023-2028. I am delighted to note that it does precisely that, take into consideration the need to keep multiple doors of opportunity open for our students. In this regard, the Hostos Research Center will go far in supporting the civil rights of our students, to be provided access to teaching and learning opportunities that support their following their dream, having paths to choose from, guided by the intelligent and generous support of all of the college community-faculty, staff and administration.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

A POEM

“Two Kinds of Intelligence”

By Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi

There are two kinds of intelligence: one acquired,

as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts

from books and from what the teacher says,

collecting information from the traditional sciences

as well as from the new sciences.

With such intelligence you rise in the world.

You get ranked ahead or behind others

in regard to your competence in retaining

information. You stroll with this intelligence

in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more

marks on your preserving tablets.

There is another kind of tablet, one

already completed and preserved inside you.

A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness

in the center of the chest. This other intelligence

does not turn yellow or stagnate. It's fluid,

and it doesn't move from outside to inside

through conduits of plumbing-learning.

This second knowing is a fountainhead

from within you, moving out.

Translated by Coleman Barks.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ

Dear Caimans,

With midterms and spring break behind us, I hope that all members of the Hostos community enjoyed the well-needed break and the warmer weather. Now it’s time to prepare yourselves for the extraordinary challenges, excitement, and incredible moments that will come as Commencement approaches. Some of you will join me in receiving degrees and acceptance letters to our new colleges, as well as celebrating with our families and friends after the semester is done.

In the meantime, please remember that it is still award season and I hope all of you take the opportunity to apply for the multitude of scholarships Hostos has to offer, including the SGA Merit and Hardship scholarships. I also invite you to explore the Kaplan Leadership Program and Phi Theta Kappa International Honors program. I am a member of both and feel truly blessed by those experiences.

Finally, and most importantly, keep your eyes on the prize, work hard, maintain or improve your grades and continue to be incredible. The SGA stands with you and wishes you incredible success.

Best,

José González

The 2023-2028 Strategic Planning Process: Mission-aligned and Radically Hostos, Part III

The 2023-2028 Strategic Plan (SP) has been shared with the campus community via a series of three forums in late March (with one focused entirely on students). The conversations were lively; students, staff and faculty are invested in how we shape our commitments over the next five years. Feedback was carefully noted (that which was shared in real time at the forums, and feedback shared via email). A next step is to integrate the feedback with the draft strategic plan and share the amended version with the SP Steering Committee.

People seek themselves in the plan: A forum attendee reminded us that not all undocumented students are beneficiaries of DACA, and that finding relevant information about financial support, employment opportunities and more is difficult on our website. Another forum attendee suggested that Hostos help students find other students that share multiple and intersectional identities, a sentiment echoed by a student who observed that having a friend, or a buddy, along for the ride would make a big difference. These comments were noted and will inform how this plan is finalized and implemented.

Consistent with the multitude of voices that contributed to the strategic plan and the emphasis on student success, participants at the forums communicated excitement about the commitments made to integrated, intentional strategies to support students. The work is being named up front, and we’re all being called to action.

POLICY OF THE WEEK

Highlighting CUNY Policies You Should Know

Submitted by Executive Counsel and Labor Designee Eugene Sohn, Esq.

CUNY Policy on Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination

CUNY is located in a historically diverse municipality and is committed to a policy of equal employment and equal access in its educational programs and activities. Diversity, inclusion, and an environment free from discrimination are central to the mission of the University.

Read the entire policy here.

DIVERSITY AND COMPLIANCE

Submitted by Chief Diversity Officer, Title IX and 504/ADA Coordinator Philip Oliveri, Esq.

As we are in the month of April, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight that April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The City University of New York and Hostos Community College stand by our community members who have experienced sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence. Sexual assault is an issue that impacts our entire community. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, 13% of all students experience rape or sexual assault, through physical force, violence, and/or incapacitation.

In recognition of this issue, Hostos Community College will celebrate Denim Day on Wednesday, April 26. Wear your favorite denim that day in honor and support of victims of sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence. Make sure to tag any pictures on social media using the hashtag #CUNYDenimDay. If anyone has old denim that they no longer wear, consider cutting it into pieces and then attaching safety pins to it. This can then serve as a denim ribbon for people who cannot wear denim on the day.

Succeed@Hostos Stories

Succeed@Hostos has been incredibly beneficial in connecting with students and faculty. I have the ability to share individual or mass messages, monitor flags, and send kudos. The ability to reach a student by accessing their profile and sending a note or mass email to my entire caseload are some of the frequently used features that allow me to be as efficient as possible. I really appreciate the Flags, which allow professors to quickly contact advisors when they need to reach a student. Receiving direct messages from faculty about particular students simplifies follow-up, and I can maintain communication with both students and instructors in one location. Furthermore, referring students to another department for additional help is easy with Succeed@Hostos. I also like the possibility of scheduling meetings with me at their convenience. This provides me more time to prepare material, develop resources, and lay out their academic plans efficiently.

Admissions and Recruitment

  • On Thursday, March 30, the Office of Admissions and Recruitment hosted its Spring into College Counselor Brunch. This CUNY Week event marked a return to our hosting on-campus programs for high school and community-based organizations. Participants had the opportunity to hear from our VP La Toro Yates about the value of a Hostos education. In addition, they engaged with faculty, administrators, and student leaders in two dynamic panel discussions. The event concluded with a networking activity where participants connected with offices across the SDEM, OAA, and CEWD divisions. The offices included Financial Aid, Student Success Coaching Unit, College Discovery, ASAP, CUNY Start/Math Start, Student Health and Wellness Center, and Athletics.

  • On Friday, March 31, the Office of Admissions and Recruitment participated in the All Male Conference 2023. The event was a collaborative effort between the Eagle Academy Foundation and the Borough of Manhattan Community College. The event hosted young men from various NYC public schools and representatives from CUNY and other colleges to talk about the enrollment process for the fall 2023 semester.

  • On Friday, March 31, the Office of Admission and Recruitment was represented at the New Visions for Public Schools Career Pathway Fair at CUNY Central. The fair hosted several community organizations, including three CUNY colleges (Hostos CC, Bronx CC, and Kingsborough CC). Hostos had representatives from the CUNY Start / Math Start, CEWD, and ASAP.

  • Athletics Intramurals have been a hot topic on campus, especially with its Men's Basketball Intramural league. Students and faculty have been coming every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 – 6 p.m. to watch games and cheer on their peers. This has helped bring the campus community together.

  • Through Intramural Sports, Athletics has been able to reach more students weekly as the interest continues to grow. "1994"

By Lucille Clifton

i was leaving my fifty-eighth year

when a thumb of ice

stamped itself hard near my heart

you have your own story

you know about the fears the tears

the scar of disbelief

you know that the saddest lies

are the ones we tell ourselves

you know how dangerous it is

to be born with breasts

you know how dangerous it is

to wear dark skin

i was leaving my fifty-eighth year

when i woke into the winter

of a cold and mortal body

thin icicles hanging off

the one mad nipple weeping

have we not been good children

did we not inherit the earth

but you must know all about this

from your own shivering life

Hostos Professor Honors Student’s Achievements through Poetry

The President’s Recognition Barbeque in Honor of Student Persistence and Resiliency held on April 4 served as a platform to share words of encouragement with students. Each nominator expressed each of their honorees’ strengths and qualities for recognition. Prof. Sherese Mitchell nominated student Kathleen Rodríguez.

Instead of just dedicating a few words, Prof. Mitchell composed and read a poem inspired by Ms. Rodríguez’s wonderful qualities. We thank Prof. Mitchel for sharing this inspiring piece with us:

 “Who is She?—Kathleen Rodriguez”

She started the semester at 36 weeks

Proactive student, so she decided to speak

Kathleen informed me

She was with child

I told her this course

Wasn’t for the mild

Writing Intensive

But she was pensive

And did what she had to do

I didn’t offer

Because I knew she wouldn’t accept

Handouts or extensions

Wow…..respect

As I reflect on her words:

  • “I had some questions”
  • “I’ve learned some lessons”
  • “I’m tired, no excuses….only blessings”
  • “My baby boy is here”
  • “I am back in”
  • “I’m ready to win”
  • “Let’s get this A”
  • “Come what may”

Words of persistence

Words of resilience

Words of Kathleen Rodriguez

Words of no other

Words of a single mother of three

Words of a Hostos student

Sit back and watch

Who she turns out to be!
