As I write these brief remarks, the Hostos family is engaged in productive ways to support semester completion and to participate in multiple student-centered activities and pinning ceremonies.

This past week, several activities have focused our attention on embracing a diverse and hopeful world. It was a week about respect and understanding of one another, of how much we have in common, and of understanding our differences.

As we engage in these next few weeks, I remind my dear students to focus on successful completion of the semester. Please reach out to your faculty and advisors, and continue to access all the support services available to you.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT TYLER WOODS

Student Government Elections

In accordance with the constitution of the Hostos Student Government Association (SGA), the Spring 2026 Student Government Elections took place online from Tuesday, April 21, to Thursday, April 23, 2026. There are ten candidates running for positions in the next SGA administration. These candidates will take office July 1, 2026, and will serve for a period of one year (until June 30, 2027).

The group of candidates includes various members of the present administration as well as several new students. Because not all positions will be filled (ten candidates are running for sixteen positions), the students who are elected will need to recruit additional students to complete their teams.

We look forward to training and working with the new SGA team.

Hostos Research Center Announces HRC Scholars Program Mini Conference

The Hostos Research Center and Committee on Sponsored Programs and Grants (HRC-CSPG) are pleased to announce the HRC Scholars Program Mini Conference on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Now in its second year, the HRC Scholars Program has engaged a cohort of 15 students who will present the research they have developed with the mentorship and support of Hostos faculty and CUNY Graduate Center fellows. The conference program will be held in the HRC (Bldg. C, Room 130) from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and will feature a poster exhibit, two oral poster presentations by our students (one in the morning and the other in the afternoon), and the presentation of certificates to all program participants. This will be a wonderful way to cap off the academic year and celebrate the work of the HRC Scholars Program, which provides our students with mentored research experiences across all disciplines. All members of the Hostos community are invited to attend.

Seeking 2026-27 NextGen Public Health Scholars!

All current Hostos students interested in pursuing a career in public health and epidemiology are invited to apply to the NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program, which joins Hostos Community College and Columbia University in providing eligible students access to full tuition coverage, mentoring, and career development throughout their undergraduate and graduate education. Since the program’s start, eight students have been selected for this amazing program, and we are now seeking two new students to begin this Fall 2026. We invite students currently enrolled at Hostos with a minimum GPA of 3.2 and on track to complete 30 or more credits this academic year to apply for consideration. The True Cost of Living as a Lens on Wages After Graduation

In March 2026, the NYC Mayor’s Office for Equity & Racial Justice published an inaugural report: NYC True Cost of Living Measure. The report is noteworthy because it answers the question, What do New Yorkers need to live with dignity? Living with dignity is not the same as living above the poverty line. Rather, the report adapts the Urban Institute’s True Cost of Economic Security (TCES) framework (there are other respected living wage frameworks, including the MIT Living Wage Calculator, which we’ve used at Hostos to identify household-sustaining wages). The Mayor’s report expands on work done in 2022, when New York City voters passed three racial justice ballot initiatives; the third, which passed with 81% of the vote, mandated calculating the true cost of living in New York City. 

The report includes a variety of household formations and disaggregates data by race, ethnicity, and gender, as well as by age and disability. It accounts for costs related to housing, food, health care, childcare, transportation, and “other essentials,” including emergency savings, resulting in a holistic measure of need. Among the takeaways: 62% of New Yorkers (75% of Bronx residents and 86% of Bronx residents with children) do not meet the TCOL threshold (while 18% of New Yorkers experience poverty), and the resource gaps for most groups range from $30K to $50K annually. These rates include “non-market” resources (tax credits, public benefits). Without non-market resources, 67% of New Yorkers and 80% of Bronx residents would not achieve TCOL. 

The TCOL report can be used as a lens for viewing wages earned by Hostos graduates 1, 3, 5, and 10 years after graduation. The CUNY Wage Dashboard (updated in March 2026) includes ten years of wage data for Hostos graduates. The data indicate how challenging it is for all New Yorkers to afford the cost of living, and suggest where our work can focus as we support students’ degree completion and further education in the pursuit of meaningful careers and household-sustaining wages. 

Wages Earned by Hostos Graduates

The TCOL for one adult (no children) is $70K. The table above indicates that Hostos graduates earning in the top 75th percentile earn this and more 3, 5, and 10 years after graduation. Median resources among all New Yorkers living in one-adult, no-children households is $58K; among Hostos graduates, 5 and 10 years after graduation, median earners reach this threshold. 

The TCOL report disaggregates by many variables and does not treat them in terms of intersectionality, nor does it include gender. However, at Hostos and throughout CUNY, wage differentials by gender persist, most significantly in the higher-wage brackets, though they are present across all wage brackets. This occurs even among healthcare professionals, a field in which women are significantly overrepresented, the wage differential three years after graduation is stark and consistent: for example, among the 1,243 female graduates and 358 male graduates, median wages 3 years after graduation for females is $79,474 and for male graduates is $95,709; 10 years after graduation, median wages are $95K for females and $123K for males.

*Wage dashboard data are only disaggregated by female/male. No other gender category is included. 

For households with children, the TCOL rises dramatically: a one-adult, one-child household requires $98K in resources, most of these wages. For two adults and one child, the TCOL is calculated at $148K. Granted, the TCOL assumes market rates and includes savings for emergencies, which remains a luxury for many, but the TCOL is grounded in achieving “living with dignity.” And the TCOL is both a baseline measure and a goal for the city to achieve. Hostos and CUNY play an important role in helping more students achieve and sustain wages that reflect the true cost of living in our dynamic, vibrant South Bronx and across NYC.

Diversity Month

As we champion the vibrant spirit of inclusivity and diversity that defines our campus, I am delighted to recognize the arrival of Diversity Month this April. Diversity Month takes place in April every year and was initiated in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity of the world around us. It is a time to recognize and understand our differences, be they gender, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, and other aspects, while honoring the common essence of humanity. By appreciating our similarities and differences, the month aims to get people to seek a deeper understanding of others, regardless of who they are, what they are, or how they live. 

This is a time for us to come together as a community and celebrate the medley of cultures, perspectives, and identities that make our campus truly remarkable. At Hostos, we believe that diversity is a core value that enriches our environment. By embracing diversity, we foster empathy and creativity, which are essential for success in today’s global society. I encourage each of you to participate in the many events planned these last few weeks of the semester that promote inclusivity and raise awareness of the diverse communities surrounding us. Let us take these opportunities to celebrate our differences, build bridges across cultures, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a campus where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered.

Somos El Futuro Inc. 40th Anniversary Conference Reception

The College was honored to be invited to the Governor Kathy Hochul Annual Reception celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Somos El Futuro Inc. Conference, held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the New York State Executive Mansion in Albany. This year’s conference theme, “Del Momento al Movimiento: Lead – Unite – Transform,” powerfully reflected the collective work ahead.

We extend our sincere thanks to Governor Hochul and the Somos El Futuro leadership for hosting such a meaningful gathering and for the special invitation to participate. The event brought together CUNY students and administrators, along with elected officials and leaders from multiple levels of government, in a vibrant and inspiring space. Participation in conference workshops further deepened opportunities for dialogue and collaboration.

Annual CUNY Luncheon and 28th CUNY/SUNY Model Senate Celebration

The College was also honored to attend the Annual CUNY Luncheon, hosted by CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and Assembly Member Karines Reyes, Chair of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, in celebration of the 28th CUNY/SUNY Model Senate Project. The full‑house event, held on April 18 at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, reflected the strength and breadth of public-service partnerships supporting higher education.

We extend heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to Chancellor Matos Rodríguez, Maureen Shields, and the organizing team for a successful convening that brought together an impressive group of elected and appointed officials committed to student opportunity and civic engagement. 

Office Updates

The Office of Community Relations has completed the selection process for the Summer Professional Development and Study Abroad Program cohort. The series of workshops and lectures will begin in the last week of June 2026. This important initiative is made possible through the generous financial support of NYC Department of Education Public Schools and the Office of Community Relations.

Navigate Faculty Champions Initiative

Throughout this semester, ten Navigate Faculty Champions have been training faculty on the 7 Basics of Navigate. As Provost Fabrizio noted in her faculty-wide message, "The Faculty Training Initiative will strengthen communication between faculty and student support units and enable us to work together to support student retention and success."

Ana Marjanovic to Present at the 2026 AAC&U Conference in Arizona

Ana Marjanovic, Instructional Designer in the Office of Educational Technology at Hostos Community College, will present at the 2026 AAC&U (American Association of Colleges and Universities) Conference in Arizona as part of the Innovation Session: AI-Enhanced Tutoring: Ethical and Scalable STEM Support.

This session highlights a collaborative initiative between the Academic Learning Center (HALC) and the Office of Educational Technology that explores how AI can be integrated into tutoring in ethical, accessible, and scalable ways. The work focuses on developing AI-supported tutoring agents, preparing tutors through AI literacy and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and incorporating student feedback into the design process.

Rather than positioning AI as a shortcut, the project emphasizes structured support for learning, where technology enhances, not replaces, critical thinking and human interaction. Privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible data use remain central to the implementation.

This work reflects Hostos’ broader commitment to equitable access, student success, and innovation in teaching and learning, aligning with institutional priorities around academic support, technological competency, and inclusive pedagogy.

Transfer Week in Review: Spring 2025

At the Office of Transfer Services, Transfer Week happens twice a year — the third week of October and the third week of March. Alongside our ongoing tours, campaigns, appointments, and tabling, Transfer Week is when we bring intentional, student-centered programming to life. The specific events change every semester because we learn and grow from each one — but our dedication and commitment to transfer-related programming never does.

Here’s a look at what we accomplished together this spring:

Transfer Fair

63 schools confirmed, 52 showed up — and so did 115 students. Students came ready with real questions about GPA requirements, majors, and next steps, and left with answers and new possibilities. Interest didn’t stop at the fair either — students kept following up on schools they discovered that day.

Transfer Brunch

93 current Hostos students attended! Alumni returned and inspired all of us: “You are different, and that is what makes you special,” and “Success means never stopping growing.” Our nursing students showed up in a big way, sharing their future goals and connecting with graduates who had walked the same path.

Lehman On-the-Spot Admissions

12 students met with a Lehman College admissions representative and received immediate answers about their admission decisions — a direct bridge to their next academic step.

Recent Student Email Address Changes

Recent changes occurred to CUNY students’ email addresses between April 13 and 16, 2026. Below is a summary of the changes that were implemented university-wide.

All students received a brand-new email address.

The email address will be in the following format, which in this case reflects the Hostos  campus: FirstName.LastName##@stu-mail.hostos.cuny.edu

As an example:

• First Name: Johnathan
• Last Name: Doe
• EMPLID: 12345678
• New Student Email: Johnathan.Doe78@stu-mail.hostos.cuny.edu

Once this change occurs, ALL CUNY communications will be sent ONLY to users’ CUNY email addresses.

This means that if a student has a non-CUNY email address listed as the preferred email address in CUNYfirst, it will be changed by CUNY.

Hostos Delegation Attends Mayor Mamdani’s WNYC Town Hall

On April 20, 2026, a delegation of four Hostos Honors students, accompanied by History Professor Dr. Kristopher Burrell, attended a town hall meeting featuring a conversation between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and WNYC Senior Politics Editor, Bridget Bergin, titled “NYC Mayor Mamdani’s First 100 Days: Lessons from LaGuardia.”  The students, Fabian Del Valle, Sarai Roca, Veronica Rosa, and Jorge Sanz, were all excited to attend and two of them even spoke to the mayor. Congratulations to Dean Ana García Reyes 

We gratefully acknowledge City & State for selecting Hostos Dean Ana García Reyes as one of its 2026 Nonprofit Trailblazers. This recognition honors leaders whose lifelong dedication to charity, diversity, and sustainability has helped make New York a stronger and more just place to live. Hostos Offers Free Preventive Dental Hygiene Services to the Public

The Dental Hygiene Patient Care Facility at Hostos Community College is a teaching unit that provides high-quality dental care, primarily cleanings and dental x-rays, to the community, while adhering to the most current sterilization techniques. Several appointments will be needed and each may last three hours at a time.

Description: The Office of the President, in collaboration with The Writing Center, is pleased to host the Spring 2026 Peace & Poetry event on Wednesday, April 29.

We will be joined by guest poets Kay Poema '13 and Dara Kalima, who will share their work with us through poems that open new ways of seeing and feeling. This will be an inspiring and reflective afternoon where the Hostos family will have the opportunity to come together and share the poems that bring meaning and beauty to our lives.

Description: John Mogulescu and Bonne August will talk about “Expanding CUNY’s Mission: The History and Scope of Continuing Education,” an exhibit that has gathered 181 documents to trace the history of CUNY’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education at the Central Office from its creation in 1984 in the Office of Academic Affairs through a 36-year evolution. That office, working closely with campus ACE programs, built a host of successful and lasting programs that continue to serve hundreds of thousands of students and has brought significant change to CUNY and New York City. Description: Celebrate your graduation with your chosen family and the Hostos LGBTQIA+ Council. Lavender Graduation ceremonies are celebrated throughout the country for students who are not always able to be out to their families. Students will receive a rainbow graduation stole to wear at the main ceremony, and a certificate with their chosen name.

Description: The Office of Alumni Relations is pleased to revive the beloved Hostos Homecoming tradition. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, September 26. The full-day event will feature a range of activities—from family fun to professional development and networking opportunities. Details will be announced in the coming weeks, but you won’t want to miss out. Tickets will be available soon, and the early-bird suggested donation for general admission will start at $25 through June 30. After June 30, the price will increase to $50. Register here.
