MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

It is good to come to the end of a week that has proceeded with generosity and goodwill. I was moved by the presence of so many members of the Hostos family, internal and external, at our annual gala earlier this week. It was a moment of great joy and hope as we continue to move forward with our mission in support of all. I am happy to share my remarks from the April 26 event.

HOSTOS GALA 2023 REMARKS

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

April 26, 2023

Good evening. Muy buenas noches. It is lovely to see about 340 of you in person. How special to have with us Prof. Angel Morales’ theater students as we cheer them on and support their participation in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this coming summer. Happy to have Professor Ialongo and Professor Jones with their honor students here tonight. The Hostos family is in the house! A very special greeting and thank you to Foundation Board Chair José Sánchez-Kinghorn and our beautiful members of the Hostos Foundation. I would like to thank Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, his lovely partner in life, Dr. Lilliana Arabia, my fellow CUNY college presidents, Christine Mangino, Claudia Schrader, and Frank Wu’s representative, and CUNY colleagues Vice Chancellor Denise Maybank and someone very familiar to Hostos, Associate Vice Chancellor Dolly Martínez. Good to see the Stavros Niarchos Foundation once again in the house. Mil gracias de todo corazón. We have with us this evening DC 37 leader Henry Garrido and his guest Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez and Dr. Pedro Maria - always so proud of our alums! A special and enthusiastic welcome to our honorees: Professor Cynthia Jones, Catherine Lapadula, George M. Logothetis, Michael R. Potack, and Dr. Ramon Tallaj, our sponsors, donors, family members, friends, faculty, staff, students, and guests for being here this evening.  A special thank you, as always, for his support to my husband Nunzio De Filippis, my partner over so many decades, and our son Nunzio A. De Filippis and his wife Christina Weir, who traveled from Los Angeles to join us this evening, as well as members of my Naugatuck Valley Community College family who continue to support my journey. My appreciation to members of my Cabinet and the President’s Office, and a very special thank you to Vice President Atkins and her Institutional Advancement team for the beauty of this evening.

We are united tonight in our mutual appreciation of the great potential of the students Hostos serves. We are connected through our belief in the power of quality education to transform individual lives, families, and communities. With Commencement a month away, I am pleased to share that in order to accommodate our students and their families, we will be holding two commencement ceremonies, the afternoon of May 31 and the morning of June 1. We are delighted to have with us this evening our Valedictorian Yassine Gaye and Salutatorian Subrena Williams as guests of Professor Jacqueline Di Santo. Congratulations to our very talented students, and mil gracias to their encouraging and supportive faculty mentor. That is the Hostos Family!

We celebrate this evening the 55th anniversary of the founding of Eugenio María de Hostos Community College. 1968 was a time of political, social, cultural, and economic ferment.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had sown the seeds of civil rights and equity, and fairness. Change was in the air, civil rights, anti-colonial and anti-war activism, and women’s liberation shaped our society and this Queens College student. Demands for educational reform motivated activity across the country. Here in NYC, a dedicated group of Puerto Rican educators and community leaders recognized the pressing need for affordable, high-quality post-secondary education in the Bronx. Thanks to their efforts, Hostos Community College was created.

The College is named after Don Eugenio María de Hostos (1839-1903). A more appropriate source of inspiration would be difficult to find. Hostos was a trailblazing Puerto Rican educator, writer, and advocate for human rights. One of the most influential Latin American scholars of his day, recognized as a Citizen of the Americas, Hostos reformed education in Chile and the Dominican Republic to integrate the education of women in the sciences and affirm student-centered pedagogies, as he also worked for the independence of Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Much has changed in 55 years. One thing, however, remains the same: our commitment to the ideas and ideals of Hostos. Every effort the College makes is in service of access, equity, and inclusion.  We are grateful and proud of the opportunity to play an important role in the life of the South Bronx and the diverse communities that, like us, call the borough home.

Like the Bronx, the College has endured hard times and celebrated good times.  Five and a half decades since its founding, Hostos remains a vital force, moving from strength to strength.  Our work has, for the second time, been recognized by an Aspen Top Ten for Community College Excellence this year. Our students benefit from the number of initiatives supported by Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift that has allowed us to recently open the Hostos Research Center in support of strengthening our students' transfer opportunities and supporting the research of faculty and students in a mentoring and generous out-of-classroom experience.  The Hostos family knows, and I am so grateful to our students and colleagues, that hope and care are at the center of this academic family that continues to move forward in significant and meaningful ways.

It is no secret that the Bronx was hardest hit by the pandemic, disproportionately through illness or loss of jobs. We serve predominantly low-income communities, predominantly communities of color. These individuals are in great need when it comes to our support. How many of us have immigrated or been refugees and can now call America our home? How many of us know what it’s like to worry about covering basic needs and expenses such as rent and childcare?  We all know that it takes a village. It takes a village to raise children, grow in your professional career, and have strong mentors and support for completing your education. Come join us in continuing to sustain a powerful equity bridge in the next phase of its journey, one where individuals come to us as students seeking knowledge, and they depart as ambassadors of Hostos, where they are proud to recount their experiences that have helped transform their lives.

Our goal, through this event and others, is to better provide students with the quality education and care that they deserve. And we are making progress toward that goal thanks to the generosity,  collaboration, and deliberate action of people like you.

As our work in the coming years continues, we will strive to enhance the intellectual, educational, cultural, and civic-minded experiences we offer students and the communities we serve. Since I arrived at the College in August 2020, I have shared my lifelong vision of what a community college should be: a place where the word “community” is central, a place where students are considered our most sacred trust and our finest asset, and where collaboration within and outside the confines of our immediate surroundings defines our actions. Community college students provide us with opportunities to contribute to the betterment of society and to feel that we will share in a future that will not be ours and where we may not go, but whose rich harvest will have been ensured by the seeds that we plant today.

As always, I close my remarks by reflecting on Pablo Neruda’s Nobel Laureate speech: his understanding of the connection we have with others and the responsibility we have to one another as we try to move forward as human beings in this life’s journey.  Here is a brief excerpt from Neruda’s speech, words some of you have heard me read many times before:

All paths lead to the same goal; to convey to others what we are…

but in this dance or in this song, there are fulfilled the most ancient

rites of our conscience in the awareness of being human and of

believing in a common destiny.

I wish everyone a wonderful evening and thank you once more for your support as I remind you of opportunities to support and encourage our students on their journeys.

Again, thank you all for being here.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

MS. MACKENZIE SCOTT’S GIFT: PRESIDENT’S INITIATIVES

Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I hope that all is progressing well in your work and studies as we near the end of April. I am delighted to share how Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives have provided many great opportunities for community-building and resource-sharing over the past month.

Last week, two of our Educating for Diversity grantees held their planned events. In partnership with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, the Hostos JUSTICE Committee held the Welcome Home Resource Fair, which brought together 30 community-based organizations to provide vital information on available services for students and family members impacted by the criminal justice system. It was wonderful to see the collaboration and the positive energy that brought everyone together to meet the needs of our Bronx community. Ms. Marsha Milan Bethel led this effort with the support of the SDEM team and other Hostos departments.

The virtual Teaching Meets Wellness event, which Professor Stacey Cooper coordinated, was also held last week and featured keynote speaker Dr. Tanzina Ahmed from Kingsborough Community College. Dr. Ahmed presented on the topic, “Covid Has Changed the Way I Handle Food,” which allowed students to learn about food insecurity's impact during the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on CUNY students. Kudos to our Educating for Diversity grantees for their incredible efforts!

I am also happy to report about the Hostos Research Center’s (HRC) recent activities since the ribbon-cutting ceremony held last month. On April 27, the HRC served as the ideal venue for Research Day, Hostos’ annual celebration that recognizes the important research being conducted by Hostos faculty and staff. Coordinated by Professor Thomas Beachdel, with support from the Office of Grants and the President’s Office, the event showcased the accomplishments and innovation of faculty and staff-led research projects. It was wonderful to see the flourishing of new ideas and projects across a variety of disciplines.

The HRC is continuing to generate opportunities for research development and recently announced the new 2023 ADELANTE grantees who will soon be embarking on the development of their funded research over a one-year period. Each project will also engage a Hostos student research assistant that will receive faculty mentoring and hands-on research experience. Congratulations to all the new ADELANTE awardees!

The HRC and CSPG (Committee for Sponsored Programs and Grants) has just issued a new Call for Proposals for the 2023 IDEAS Project Development Awards (Innovating, Developing, and Executing Actions with Success). Faculty and staff are invited to submit proposals addressing institutional needs and/or current research questions with potential to be translated and materialized into a full-fledged project eligible for external funding. Each HRC-CSPG – IDEAS Project will receive $1,000 or $2,000 as a summer 2023 stipend/start-up funding to develop a grant proposal to be submitted to an external funding opportunity.

Click here to access the Call for Proposals. Application deadline is May 31, 2023.

Reminder: It’s A-PART season!

Virgil said, "Now every field is clothed with grass, and every tree with leaves; now the woods put forth their blossoms, and the year assumes its gay attire…” and, apologies to Virgil, but it’s also time to talk about completing 2022-2023 unit-level annual planning and assessment reports, aka A-PARTs!

With the close of the academic year approaching quickly, this post is directed to academic chairs and to all faculty contributing to the A-PART process*:

Director of Assessment Prof. AJ Stachelek emailed the academic departments a week ago conveying the following:

“At the start of the academic year, you received a link to the A-PART template to use for 2022-2023. Ideally, the activities column is fully populated and some results are already in place. Please note that if you, your unit coordinators and/or program directors need assistance, we can meet to finalize the A-PART for your department.”

There has been a one-year shift regarding learning outcomes assessment. Each department has been provided with a review of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) focused on its largest degree program. The review can be used to complete Goal 3 as the degree program assessment for 2022-2023. For departments who have not received a degree program KPI report, please reach out to Prof. Stachelek for a meeting before May 15.

*The schedule for AES Units (aka “non-academic” units) will be explicitly addressed in a later post.

Hostos Community College Career Services is proud to announce a partnership with Deloitte that will give 15 students the opportunity to visit and learn more about internship and career pathways in business and accounting. On April 21, Lisanette Rosario, Director of Career Services, Professor Claude Fernandez, and 15 Hostos Community College students took part in a tour of Deloitte's corporate offices and a workshop to help map out individual skills, interests, and goals.

This partnership was an exciting opportunity for Hostos students to explore potential career pathways and gain insight into the corporate world. At Deloitte, students were able to gain first-hand knowledge of what a successful career in business and accounting could be like.

The partnership between Career Services and Deloitte began in Spring 2022 when Deloitte joined Hostos to collect over 100 suits from Deloitte professionals for students needing proper business attire. In Fall 2022, 20 Hostos students attended Deloitte Academy online workshops.

In addition, the Director met with juniors, seniors, and parents to promote Hostos Community College and its outstanding academic degree programs.

  • The Director’s Brunch Sessions series started the week of April 10. These gatherings are designed for newly admitted students to chat with Director Rivera (or an alternate Admissions team member) about the enrollment process. CUNY EDGE

We held our CUNY EDGE workshop on Time Management & Goal Setting in the second week of April. This workshop was a collaboration with an external partner, LIFT NYC. During this workshop, we discussed effective strategies to help establish and achieve personal and academic goals using SMART, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound criteria, used for setting goals.

We walked participants through how to use “passion planners,” which will help with tracking weekly, monthly, and yearly goals. We will also provide these worksheets to students via email and in our office so they can begin utilizing them. Plus, we raffled off three Amazon gift cards worth $50 each to our student participants, and gathered feedback from our students who attended the workshop by conducting our post-workshop survey. The results from our survey showed that students found the information provided during the workshop “very helpful” and had great facilitation.

Important Announcement

Reminder: CUNY to End the Emergency COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate

On Tuesday, April 11, CUNY announced it is ending the Emergency COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate effective on the last day of the Spring semester, which for Hostos Community College and many other CUNY colleges is May 23. The federal government plans to let the Public Health Emergency for COVID-19 expire in May, and CUNY’s lifting of the vaccine mandate aligns with this action. This CUNY change is subject to the CUNY Board of Trustees’ ratification at their next meeting.

Ending the Emergency COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate will mean that students can enroll in classes, starting with the Summer sessions, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status.

In addition to ending the vaccine mandate, CUNY will also end the COVID-19 testing program and close the testing sites on campuses and the Central Office by the end of June. The testing program had covered the random weekly testing of vaccinated students, faculty, and staff, as well as the testing of those CUNY community members who were granted a religious exception or medical exemption and those who did not want to disclose their vaccination status. At the same time, the University will end the use of the Cleared4 health verification platform. Colleges can return to their standard procedures for granting campus access to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Hostos 55th Anniversary Gala Raises Over $425,000 for Scholarships and Opportunities

The Hostos Community College Foundation extends its gratitude to the faculty, staff, alumni, and students who supported the 55th Anniversary Gala. Once again, guests illustrated that Hostos is a community first, as faculty, staff, and friends of the College celebrated more than a half-century of impact by giving of themselves to support current students. Over $425,000 were raised to bolster scholarships and enhance academic services.

During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed the musical stylings of saxophonist Jorge Luis Zouain and student musician Marie Inamori. The program started with a colorful, lively performance from the Dominican Dance Group, and guests danced the night away with DJ Ralphie Mercado. In their welcoming remarks, Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis and MC Monica Morales recognized the not-so-secret force behind the festive evening.

The Gala, hosted by the Hostos Community College Foundation, honored intrepid leaders whose work and philanthropy align with Hostos‘ mission to celebrate and empower diverse communities, foster socioeconomic mobility, and provide equitable access to quality higher education. The evening’s honorees were:

  • Distinguished Professor Award: Cynthia Jones, Lecturer, Hostos Community College
  • Empowerment Award: Catherine Lapadula, Managing Director/Market Executive, International Division, WM UBS
  • Healthcare Impact Award: Ramon Tallaj, M.D., Chairman, Somos Community Care
  • Philanthropic Impact Award: Michael R. Potack, Chairman, Unitex Healthcare Laundry Services
  • Global Impact Award: George M. Logothetis, Executive Chairman, Libra Group

Hostos’ student acting troupe, the Hostos Repertory Company, gave a sneak peek of their hilarious play “What You Will,” which will travel all the way to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. Foundation Board members requested additional support to help defray travel costs for this incredible opportunity. Thanks to an anonymous $10,000 matching gift, guests responded enthusiastically and generously to the request for funds, raising nearly $15,000. The Foundation still hopes to raise another $19,000 to alleviate travel costs for students, and you can help by coming to see the show or by making a gift to help students.
