MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | |
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
I am happy to write this morning as the first week of April comes to a close and we reflect on our own religious celebrations that have taken place and those approaching in the form of peace, rest and hope of spring break. Let there be peace in our hearts and in the world. It is a hopeful time of the year, and we move forward together here at Hostos, filled with sunlight and expectations for a generous end of the academic year.
Last week we celebrated our students who have persisted and succeeded in staying the course despite so many challenges with the President’s Recognition Tea in Honor of Women’s History Month. Congratulations to our fifteen honorees, see Bravo News, and a very special thank you to the generous and caring faculty and staff who support them and submitted a successful nomination. Mil gracias as well to Professor Jacqueline DiSanto, keynote speaker and Deputy Director Su Ng, moderator, for an excellent celebratory event.
Hostos, if I may add, is one heart that sings in a chorus of multiple diverse voices, celebrating the commitment embraced by all to bring equity and social justice to a very deserving student population and communities. This event certainly brought reassurance that the doors to a better future by means of quality and affordable higher education is at hand.
As the event was coming to a close, I was informed of the fact that Senator Schumer had asked to speak with me. By now you know of the good news that another $1 million earmark has been secured for Hostos. The Senator was delighted to tell me. We are all ever so grateful for the support our good work in the South Bronx is receiving from our elected officials. I am looking forward to seeing both Senator Schumer and Congressmen Richie Torres and Adriano Espaillat at our upcoming commencement ceremonies to celebrate our students’ achievements with them and to express our gratitude for their continued support of public higher education, CUNY and our beloved Hostos.
Wishing a joyous and festive upcoming Eid-Al-Fitr Mubarak to all who celebrate!
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

"Reassurance"
By Alice Walker
I must love the questions
themselves
as Rilke said
like locked rooms
full of treasure
to which my blind
and groping key
does not yet fit.
and await the answers
as unsealed
letters
mailed with dubious intent
and written in a very foreign
tongue.
and in the hourly making
of myself
no thought of Time
to force, to squeeze
the space
I grow into.

Decentering to Reorient: “Uncomfortable” is a Relative Term, Part I
The Hostos Strategic Plan reflects our commitments to our students. Among them is refusing to choose between providing practical preparation and a liberal education because we recognize that our students need both to succeed and continue the slow work of dismantling persistent systemic inequities. The powerful employ strategies to limit access to education, and among the tools employed are book bans.
In January 2024, NBC reported that one Florida school district had “pulled” 1,600 books “for review.” Since 2021, states, including Tennessee and Florida, have banned curricula that make students “feel uncomfortable.” In addition to book bans, 21 states have educational gag orders that prevent the discussion of topics such as gender, sexuality, evolution, and racism. Teachers and librarians self-censor and receive death threats. None of this is new; it’s an old and practiced reaction by white Americans in power who fear the coming change that displaces them from their place of power.
Lawmakers in Iowa, Arkansas, Mississippi and Florida proposed bills specifically banning “The 1619 Project” created by Nikole Hannah-Jones from schools on the grounds that it “denies or obfuscates the principles” on which the United States is founded – and that the material is “racially divisive” because it recenters American history around the legacy of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans.
“The 1619 Project” was first a special edition of the New York Times Magazine (2019) that was a sensation – a testament to the 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were brought to the United States. It states, “Our democracy’s founding ideals were false when they were written. Black Americans fought to make them true.” People savored it, shared and saved it. This special edition and the much more substantial book that followed in 2021 comprise “The 1619 Project”: it is provocative and disorienting/reorienting because it centers Black people’s experiences and demonstrates time and again how the practice of slavery/of enslaving Others by racializing Others, is the United States’ defining institution – and that the contributions of Black Americans are foundational and inextricable from the fabric of this country. This is not an “alternative” history.
For each kid whose parents, teachers, preachers, and other community leaders are made uncomfortable because what that kid reads leads to questions that puncture the smoothed-out narratives that pass for History – there’s a kid out there who finds their family legacies and legends validated by these reorienting narratives, who is empowered and emboldened when they learn what they know when they read history made History.

Hostos is getting ready for the exciting launch of Brightspace, our brand-new CUNY learning management system (LMS). As part of the pioneering Phase 1 group within CUNY, we are set to go live this Summer 2024.
It is crucial that we all contribute to ensuring a seamless transition. To facilitate this, the EdTech team is providing a comprehensive suite of workshops and one-on-one support sessions, supplemented by additional offerings from the CUNY Transition team. Additionally, self-paced micro-learnings were thoughtfully developed to address all the foundational elements of the new environment, offering an opportunity to deepen your understanding and skills at your own pace.
We are taking a collaborative approach, with departments across Hostos scheduling all-faculty workshops that aid in the transition and foster team spirit and collective growth. Adding to our robust support system, we're thrilled to announce that our Brightspace Faculty Fellows - Christine Choi (English), Kate Wolfe (Behavioral and Social Sciences), Sanjay Arya (Allied Health Sciences), and Victor Torres-Velez (Humanities) – have completed the CUNY Brightspace training modules. They are ready to share their knowledge and assist faculty within and beyond their departments. This initiative signifies our commitment to providing targeted support wherever it is needed.
As the Summer 2024 semester approaches, the urgency to adjust and adopt Brightspace grows. We encourage everyone to engage with the available resources, attend the training sessions, and connect with our instructional designers and Brightspace Faculty Fellows. Together, we can make this transition not just successful but exemplary.

Enhancing Oral Health: A Dental Outreach Initiative at a NYC Public School
Dental Hygiene Assistant Professor Annie Chitlall
In honor of Children’s Dental Health Month, Prof. Annie Chitlall, from the Allied Health Dental Hygiene Unit, orchestrated a transformative dental outreach program at a bustling New York City public school. This endeavor was exciting and immensely beneficial to the 100 kindergarten students who participated. Alongside Prof. Chitlall were two dedicated senior graduating students, Nathaly Mendez and Bettina Ingaran, who selflessly volunteered to accompany her on this meaningful mission.
The initiative was not just an ordinary outreach program but a proactive step towards promoting oral health awareness among the younger generation. By targeting kindergarten students, Prof. Chitlall and her team aimed to instill healthy dental habits early, laying the foundation for a lifetime of good oral hygiene practices.
The atmosphere during the dental outreach was filled with enthusiasm and eagerness. Kindergarten students, curious and impressionable, eagerly awaited their turn to participate in the dental screenings and educational activities organized by Prof. Chitlall and her team. The presence of Nathaly Méndez and Bettina Ingaran as senior dental hygiene students added an element of mentorship and inspiration for the young children, who looked up to them with admiration.
Throughout the outreach program, Prof. Chitlall and her team engaged the students in interactive sessions, educating them about the importance of brushing, flossing, and maintaining a healthy diet for optimal oral health. Engaging demonstrations and age-appropriate activities made learning about dental hygiene fun and informative for the children.
The impact of this outreach program extended far beyond the confines of the school walls. By reaching out to 100 kindergarten students, Prof. Chitlall and her team had a ripple effect on the entire community. Armed with newfound knowledge about oral health, the children became ambassadors for good dental practices, sharing their learnings with their families and peers.
Moreover, the involvement of Nathaly Mendez and Bettina Ingaran served as a valuable learning experience for them as future dental professionals. Through hands-on interaction with young children, they honed their communication skills and gained insights into pediatric dental care's unique challenges and opportunities.
In conclusion, Prof. Annie Chitlall's dental outreach at the NYC public school, in collaboration with senior graduating students Nathaly Mendez and Bettina Ingaran, was a commendable initiative that left a lasting impact on the participants. By promoting oral health awareness and instilling healthy habits in kindergarten students, the program contributed to the children's well-being and fostered a culture of preventive dental care within the community. As we celebrate Children’s Dental Health Month, initiatives like these serve as shining examples of the positive impact that dedicated professionals can have on the health and well-being of future generations.

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY
“Invictus”
By William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Celebrating the Accomplishments of the Hostos Community
Congratulations to Marsha Milan-Bethel
Congratulations to Admissions Advisor Marsha Milan-Bethel for successfully defending her dissertation, "The Transitional Journey from Incarceration to a College Degree, Through the Lived Experiences of Women." This significant work provides an in-depth exploration of the transformative experiences of women navigating the path from incarceration back into society and pursuing higher education. Dr. Milan-Bethel has been awarded an Educational Doctorate in Administration & Supervision from St. John’s University. Her research not only contributes valuable insights into educational and correctional studies but also highlights the resilience and determination of women to overcome obstacles to achieve their academic goals. We are immensely proud of you, Dr. Milan-Bethel!
We invite you to listen to this episode of the "On Track with All My People" podcast, where Dr. Milan-Bethel is a guest. She brings her expertise to the forefront of a critical discussion on supporting justice-involved youth. The episode provides a deep dive into the challenges and societal obstacles these young individuals face, highlighting the severe lack of resources available and how she’s helping diverse communities overcome that through her work at Hostos.

Congratulations to Wilfredo José Burgos-Matos
Communications Publications Editorial Manager Wilfredo José Burgos-Matos recently earned his Ph.D. in Iberian and Latin American Languages and Cultures, focusing on Caribbean Sound Studies, from The University of Texas at Austin. He successfully defended his dissertation, "Amargue: The Communal Ecologies of a Dominican Feeling." This study explores themes of blackness and the geographical landscapes of sound and music, specifically focusing on how the sentiment of amargue within bachata music has fostered a sense of community on the island and in New York City. It examines this musical expression by highlighting the cultural and emotional landscapes shaped by bachata’s amargue through urban ethnographies of Santo Domingo and The Bronx, visual culture examinations of performances and lyrics, and literary analysis of three Dominican novels: “El Montero” by Pedro Francisco Bonó (1856), “Over” by Ramón Marrero Aristy (1939), and “Bachata del ángel caído” by Pedro Antonio Valdéz (1999). Congratulations, Dr. Burgos-Matos!
